Aaron Bleackley While we were walking across Spain Matt found this leaf. He was so excited for the expression that it was making. To convince me what a good leaf it was he was trying to imitate the expression that it was making.

Matthew was a renaissance man! I had the pleasure of having a prep with him at Fraser Academy and it did not matter the topic, Matthew was always adding insightful comments to our staffroom discussions: politics, science, history, arts, literature, current events, etc. In one of these discussions, he suggested I read a fan fiction piece where Harry...

Matt it has been an honor meeting and getting to know you. I remember when I first started playing badminton we took the same group lessons. You always stood in my mind because you were always smiling and being friendly to myself and others. I referred to you as the big friendly giant : ) You are such a genuine person and a great role model. Yo...
I never met him, but I haven't been able to stop crying. I'm limited in what I can do but I'm praying for you both still and will always.
I had the chance to have Mr. sun as a teacher for my 9th grade math class, and the memory’s I have from that class will be with me forever. Mr.sun was an amazing teacher and always made time to help us if we had any questions. I have trouble with math and he was always there for me even if he needed to explain something a million times over he nev...
Riley Ryder I’m not sure how to make a formal video but I knew it would be hard to type this all. I am a student at Fraser academy, graduating this year. I never had Mr. Sun teach any of my academics but he played a HUGE part in me getting to where I am today and I want anyone who loves him to hear my story. And to him, the students are doing Halloween Big just for you . Fly high.
I knew Matthew at the UBC through the Teacher Education program. He was an amazing young man, always willing to share his love of games and music with everyone. I know he was a wonderful young teacher who made an impact on all those who knew him. I’m so very sorry for the loss for his family, friends, and school colleagues and students.
Matt showed me now to embrace adventure and the unknown, or at least uncertain. I shall miss my dear friend deeply and will always treasure ways he expanded my world and my mind.
Matthew was a wonderful teacher and an amazing human. He will be missed incredibly by all his colleagues and students. I wish his family courage in the face of such an unimaginably painful time. I’m so thankful to know he got to marry the love of his life and that he was able to go on some fantastic trips these last months after his diagnosis and k...
I graduated Fraser Academy last year, and only ever had Mr. Sun as a substitute teacher. I have some of my favorite memories of highschool because of him. Mr. Sun ran the weekly Tabletop RPG club at Fraser. This gave my friends and I a great way to spend some time together, have a good time and unwind. My new found interest in table top games has l...
Ben Tse It was an honour and privilege to have been a teammate of Matthew on Prince of Wales’ badminton team. Matthew’s hard work ethic and contagious smile bought the team many victories. Rest well brother.
I met Matt through some common friends and had the chance to travel with him on an occasion. We connected through our love of gaming and he was just so kind and thoughtful... he talked with purpose and passion. He lived his life with a kindness and compassion that I will always strive to achieve. The world is worse for losing him, but we’ll just ha...
Hello my name is Aryelah Chaya Simon, I am graduating from Grade 12 this year Fraser Academy. I am heartbroken and in utter disbelief to learn of Mr. Sun’s passing. I too never had Mr. Sun as a teacher for any of my courses, however, I did have him several times as a substitute teacher. I always remember him being a helpful substitute teacher wh...
Matt was a great person, and I really enjoyed getting to know him during teacher's college. He had such a unique way of looking at things, and particularly education - I learned a lot from him when we were working together. It has been great to read these memorials and hear from some of his students about the impact he has had. The world will miss...
I am Jordan Mak and I'm a student from Fraser Academy. It seems like Mr Sun was a nice guy and I'm new in Middle School. I'm heartbroken on Mr Sun passed away.
Your death is not meaningless when you fight for life. I am happy I met this gamer man.
He was such a passionate person and that shined through when we were in the middle years program together. Coincidentally, we both ended up starting our teaching in Prince George and not only was it wonderful to have a familiar face in a new town, but a carpool buddy to drive home with one Thanksgiving. Everyone whose lives he touched were a bit be...
R.I.P Mr. Sun its sad to see such a great spirit go way too soon. Mr. Sun loved his work, he always came to work with a positive attitude and had great joy in working with young people. You will truly be missed R.I.P Mr. Sun
Talking to Mr. Sun at school brightened up my day. In almost every conversation we had, there would be some laughter. He introduced me to the role-playing game of DnD and was a huge supporter of a creative writing piece that I call "The Sacred Seven." Thanks to Mr. Sun, I will never forget to check every silver can for snakes. He will forever have ...
Mr.Sun was always great to talk too and an amazing listener. I’m gonna miss him a lot, and it’s gonna be hard for me to come to terms with the fact he won’t be coming back to school. Last March I went to Greece and Italy with a small group from the school, and I lit a candle in a church as a prayer for Mr.Sun I’m devastated that it didn’t work. My ...
While I was not in any classes that Mr. Sun taught, I would often see him around in the school going from class to class or while I was in the lunchroom and he was preparing for his next class. Looking back, whenever I would pass him or be in the same area as him, I could feel his positive spirit lifting the atmosphere. It hurts to know that he is ...
I got to have Mr Sun for my grade 9 math class. Not only did he make math fun, but he also made it memorable. I remember so many moments during grade 9 and usually, I would have forgotten that by now. I am now in grade 11, but I have to say that he was an amazing teacher and made me a better person. I wish he got to see how I w...
You will be missed. Thank you for all the positive energy.
I was privileged to have Mr. Sun as a teacher in grade 8. His passion and enthusiasm for teaching were evident every class and he will be greatly missed at Fraser Academy. I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends, his memory will live on in our hearts.
On behalf of the Mulgrave community, I would like to express our deepest sympathies. Matthew was an excellent and caring educator who connected with his students in the classroom, and on the volleyball, basketball and badminton courts. He provided rewarding experiences and positive memories for many student athletes. Matthew will be greatly missed...
Mr. Sun has helped me a lot in my grade 11 year in math and chemistry. He also went to Steve Nash and he would invite me to do the workout with him. Mr. Sun was a great guy.
Mr. Sun, I am sorry for your loss but I will always be by your side no matter the cost. God bless this man with strength and power.
I am heartbroken by Matthew’s passing. I fondly remember waking up one morning to a snowman in front of my house, and was pleasantly surprised to find that Matthew and Ryan were building them. On behalf of the Suen family, we will truly miss Matthew.
Very sorry to hear that you have to carry on without Matt now. There is nothing I can say at this point, that truly helps, all I can say is that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
One of the many brilliant things about Mr. Sun is that he had a positive impact on every student who knew him, not just the ones he taught. His genuine interest in every student's niche, as weird as they can be in middle and high school, and his efforts to elevate every student were just some of the reasons even bumping into him on your way to clas...
Matt showed me that anything worth doing was worth doing with a smile. I treasure his positive attitude, enthusiasm, and unique outlook on life. They will always remain close to my heart. I miss my friend enormously and hope I can use his example to spread joy as best I can throughout the rest of my life.
I did not really get to know Mr sun that much but I have heard that he was an amazing person who loved to play dungeons and dragons.
Maureen Belliveau Matthew had a true gift of having such a kind and gentle soul. I cannot think of a time that I witnessed him angry or having mean words. He had a positive attitude in all that he did. His love for teaching was so apparent and such a gift to all of his students. May you take comfort in knowing that Matthew touched the hearts of many. I send my prayers and thoughts on this journey of grief.
Mr Sun was the best teacher I have had and will ever have. He thought me a lot and was always there when I needed him.
