Chan Lai Ping Sandie Englehart passed away on Tue Aug 05 2025, at the age of 66. Chan Lai Ping's memory will forever live on in the hearts of family and friends. A boy from Western PA, William Layton Englehart, met a girl from Hong Kong, Sandie Lai Ping Chan, and they were married August 15, 1987. How did it happen? I was a DTS leader at the YWAM base Honolulu, Hawaii. It was early 1987. A new group of students arrived from all over the world. Among them was a girl from Hong Kong. She immediately piqued my interest. She was attractive with an exotic, Asian mystique. She had a cute pug nose. She had hair like thick black silk. She was friendly and kind. She was fun to talk with. She gave me a backrub once. But most importantly, Sandie was a Christian. She grew up in a Buddhist family but rejected the worship of Guanyin. Sandie discovered Jesus Christ is the true God of boundless compassion. Sandie went to University of Ottawa and a friend invited her to church. She heard the Gospel at Ottawa Chinese Alliance Church, believed in Jesus Christ as her Savior, and was baptized (circa 1978). She attended services and fellowship meetings at OCAC. After graduation, she decided to dedicate her life to serving Christ in mission work. The Spirit led her to go to YWAM in Hawaii for training. This move was divinely inspired. She came to the DTS in which I was a leader. It was Jesus’ plan for us to be attracted to each other. We were both at the right age to meet each other (30 & 28). We had several months to get to know each other. Our DTS outreach was in French Polynesia. We served the EEPF (Eglize Evangelic du Polynesia Francais) to reach the young people with the Gospel of Christ. We often walked and talked on a beach or sat together and talked looking at the ocean. One day while walking down a road to do our drama at a church in Moorea, I asked her to marry me when the DTS was over. She said “Yes”. After that we began to make plans. She returned to Hong Kong to prepare for me to come while I traveled to other South Pacific islands (Cook Islands and Niue). I went to HK to meet her family. Her family opened their arms to me. I loved her culture, family, and HK! We had a Chinese-style engagement ceremony in HK. Sandie wore a beautiful Chinese gown and looked amazing! I returned to Pennsylvania to plan the wedding and look for a job. Sandie and her family came to my small town, Murrysville. We had our wedding ceremony at Murrysville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with Rev. John Paul Pugh officiating the ceremony, August 15, 1987. We had nothing when we started our life together but faith in Jesus Christ and love for each other. We believed the Lord called us to serve Him together. If you want to see Sandie CLP Englehart again, then you must act on JOHN 3:16: "For God loved the world so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish (in hell) but have eternal life (in heaven)." Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection, and you will be saved. Sandie is in heaven because she believed it and lived it.
