Emma Crawford I wanted to share Jack's eulogy at Dad's memorial today. We all love Dad (Pepa) so very much. ❤️ ____________________________ WILLIAM ROY CRAWFORD, SENIOR, COLONEL, US Army, Retired, Ph.D. EULOGY by Jack Caddell Crawford May 16th, 2022 THE OLD POST CHAPEL ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY Hello Family and Friends Thank you for joining us today as we remember and celebrate my Father's life. William Roy Crawford, Senior enriched our lives throughout his journey. With humble beginnings in Geneva, Alabama, he earned his degrees, ultimately reaching the level of Doctor of Philosophy. He was a highly decorated Army officer, respected for his excellent work, and courage in battle. After retiring from the military with more than 27 years of service, Roy Senior led also in business. Together, Mom and their namesake son, William Roy Crawford, Junior, spent decades helping military families around the World. Roy Junior continues this legacy today. Dad was born into a growing family with six beautiful sisters and two handsome brothers. Their Mother, Annie Lou Grant Crawford and their Father, Horace James Crawford spurred all nine of them to excellence. Dad shared a story with me this year about how his own journey to excellence began. He did not let a moment pass as he boarded the Three O'Clock Greyhound bus to Florida State University, just a few hours after his graduation from Geneva High School. He knew that he had a destiny waiting for him. After a year of study and college football, he returned to his native home to earn his bachelor's degree at what is now known as Auburn University, and enlisted in the Army ROTC program. Mom was drawn to his good looks in his dapper uniform. Dad knew that he found "the one," Lela Ann Caddell, whose family name I share, and who became his partner in life until her passing in 2020. Freshly commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, and newly married, he and Mom relocated for his initial training at the Signal Officer's School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Their adventure continued to Europe where my elder brother, William Roy, Junior, Dad's namesake, was born. Later, they returned to Fort Monmouth where I and Sister Kathleen were then born into a growing family. In the early 1960's, the United States began a military assistance program in South Vietnam. Dad was assigned to support this effort, and Mom brought their children in tow, enriching our culture and understanding of a proud people. It was there where Mom dedicated her time in the services of others too. She taught classes in conversational English. She bonded with one of her top students, Frances Hau, who became our sister-to-be. Dad ascended in rank, and after a few years in Virginia and Kansas, was called back to Vietnam as the conflict raged. As we know, it was a fragile situation where Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Guardsman, and Airmen faced danger head-on. Over 50,000 of them gave their lives there in service to our Country. Many are buried here. Now a Major, William Crawford led his unit of soldiers as they fought valiantly for Democracy. For his gallantry in action, He was awarded one of our Nation's highest honors, The Silver Star. In a few minutes, we will witness a ceremony where our Armed Forces will bestow full military honors to Colonel William Roy Crawford, Sr., U.S. Army, Retired, Ph.D. We have all made Dad very happy by being here in person or in spirit today. We know that he is watching it all from Heaven above, along with Mom. And I know that he is pleased that the Crawford name and Scottish heritage will continue to flourish through his grandsons who bear his name, Zachary, Andrew, and Matthew Crawford. I am so very proud of my Father; and I am grateful for this opportunity to share part of his amazing life with you. He is a national hero, and my inspiration.
