William McCarthy

William J. McCarthy III, 73, of Mashpee, formerly of Ulster County, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on June 14, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Catherine (Haberland) McCarthy and son of the late William J. McCarthy Jr. and Anne (Frankhauser) McCarthy. Bill was born in Mineola, NY and raised in Port Washington, NY. He served in the United States Navy during Vietnam. Following his service in the Navy he was a long time Volunteer for the Port Washington Fire Department before serving as a Firefighter in the City of New York. During his time in New York City, he was a first responder at 9/11 and a dedicated member of the Urban Search and Rescue New York Task Force One of FEMA. As part of FEMA, Bill was often called to other major events to assist in search and rescue efforts, including the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Bill loved golfing, traveling and most of all spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who loved him. In addition to his loving wife Catherine, Bill is survived by three children, Thomas McCarthy of Clinton, Matthew McCarthy and wife Pamela of Marshfield, Jessica Lopez Mora and husband Santiago of Scituate, two grandchildren Ryan McCarthy and Gabriella Lopez Mora, his brothers in-law Stephen Hess, Robert and Carl Haberland and several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home 74 Algonquin Ave. (Rte 151) Mashpee on Thursday June 18, 2020 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Church 3 Job’s Fishing Rd. Mashpee, MA on Friday June 19, 2020 at 10:30am. Burial will be held privately at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
