Sandy Lundie Steve and I studied (and played rugby) together at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and I followed his path into Shell. We met occasionally through our careers, most recently at Pearl GTL while he was GM and it was remarkable how Steve never changed over those years from college student to industry leader. He was always positive, constantly encouraging and had that infectious smile that I will never forget. My condolences to family and former colleagues - Steve was a fine man and set a great example for others to follow.
I met Steve for the first time 40 years ago on the Solvents department at Stanlow. Steve, a young Technologist fresh from University, slowly coming to terms with the realities of Stanlow in the late 1970's, early 80's. I remember Ellis Davies, Senior Technologist remarking that Steve was a promising young Technologist, and his approach to work and...
Just over 10 years after i first met Steve, i was recruited as his Head of Operations for the Additives and Intermediates Production Unit at Stanlow. Steve was the Production Unit Manager. Steve, in his usual way outlined the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. He did this simply, a hallmark of Steve's leadership style. One of his key prio...
It was a great honour for me to lead a team of very talented young managers running the chemical production units at Shell Stanlow near Chester, UK from 1991 to 1993. Steve was an outstanding member of this great team. Steve's combination of intelligence, skill, thoughtfulness and deep care for people was very rare and he had the knack of deliver...

Saying goodbye at the end of Steve's stint as A&I Production Unit Manager at Stanlow, 1996/7, i did not think that i would work with Steve again. But at the end of 2003 that would change. Steve was CSU Manager for the Nanhai Petrochemical Project, a JV between Shell and CNOOC. A massive role. Steve took the many challenges presented in his stride....

January 2008 i joined the Pearl GTL Project in Qatar. The Project was huge, complex and pressurised. There were a number of Senior Leaders critical to the success of this mega project. I am sure that Steve's contribution was recognised. He was held in high esteem by all. He was respected by all. He built a network of relationships in key aspect ...
Roy Holmes We will always remember Steve for his kind, gentle manner but at the same time being extremely astute, knowledgeable and competent in everything he did. He was highly respected and was an inspiration to all he came into contact with. From a personal perspective, Steve was extremely skilled as a manager who allowed you to get on with the job and only intervene when necessary but was always there as a learned source of reference or counsel. We will never forget his dulcet Geordie tones where every lady was politely referred to as ‘pet’ and men were referred to as ’mate’ or ‘bonny lad’ We will forever remember the good times we experienced in Qatar and in particular the many times when we dined with Steve and Jackie at the Hyatt Thai restaurant, one of Steve’s favourites. He will also be remembered for being a surprisingly good cook …. particularly his Indian dishes…. remembering an evening when we were asked around for a ‘Curry’ which turned out to be a multi-course Indian meal prepared single handedly by Steve ….. delicious. We are devastated and it is difficult to find words that express our sadness that such a lovely man has been taken from his family so soon after retirement. A great Guy who will be sadly missed Our hearts go out to Jackie, Katherine and David and send our love to them, always. Roy & Sue Holmes
Fons Claessen Steve was the heart of the Pearl operational readiness and start up team - and what a big heart! Compassionate, caring, coaching - leading by us by example. His friendship and wicked sense of humour will remain in our memories always. All my love to Jackie, a wonderful companion to Steve and us all (fish and no chips)...Fons
Rob Kretzers I learned about the capabilities of Steve when visiting the Nanhai project in 2005. We were building up the Pearl GTL project team. Roel and I were both delighted that Steve would be the commissioning manager in the Project team and then move on to the Asset team as the Start-up manager, in doing so we would have a flaw-less transition between two phases. And I muss say, Steve was a blessing in the sky, very knowledgable and experienced, calm and decisive, always caring for the people around us. I would always look for his opinion, advice and decision. If in difficult situation, when Steve would say let's do it this way, then I knew that is the path we need to follow. Later when we were both on Maarten's LT in The Hague, we reflected on retirement, and shared as friends, our thoughts and worries about how it would be.

Steve was one of the best colleagues I have had the pleasure to work with, while on PEARL in Qatar. I very much appreciated his support, coaching, and pragmatic approach which I still share with staff 10 years later. Best wishes and heart felt condolences to family.

Roel Cornelisse Establishing and growing world class capabilities of a new multi-origin project and production community in Pearl GTL Qatar is a privacy task given to few. Steve was not only pivotal in the success of this exceptional journey but established deep trusted relations and professionalism in all persons that worked with him. A heavenly gifted friend and collegue that returned far too early.
YeeMen Chin I'd like to express my deep gratitude to Steve, who has been a great supporter/mentor to me. He was one of the best leaders I have worked with throughout my career. Steve was an authentic, a truly remarkable person. He was genuine to his people and he still remembered the moment (in the picture) when we met again in Pearl after 8 years! Steve will always be missed, it is a great loss to many of us. My heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family... Sincerely, YeeMen
Steve was special. He was able to understand the situation and ask the question in such a way that the person felt supported by his questions. He really controlled the subject, the situation and the relationship. He always did this in the interest of the group, the project and the protection of the individual. As the Pearl project got into the CSU ...
Jay Rajangam I have been privileged to work for Steve while in Pearl project and continued to be mentored by him in my assignments beyond Pearl. I sincerely appreciate his support, pragmatism, mentorship and friendship. I will forever be grateful to him. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
Andy Brown Steve was the unsung hero of Pearl GTL who breathed life into this facility and the people that ran it. A man whose professionalism, leadership and integrity was inspiring to all those that worked with him. His care for his people, their development and their safety was outstanding. He was the rock in which many, including myself, built their foundation. I am devastated that he was taken from his family so soon in his retirement. No finer and selfless man would you ever meet. It was a real pleasure to have known Steve and at the same time a tragedy that he and Jackie were not able to enjoy a long retirement together they so richly deserved. With me deepest heart felt condolences to Jackie and his family. Andy Brown
We arrived in Doha on the day of the ASU fire. Steve's humility, care and commitment to never let this happen again marked the start of a very special relation. He gave trust and space second to none. He gave all he had for the community he was in at all levels. A true leader. A privilege to have worked with him. Wishing Jackie all strength.
I had the pleasure to work with Steve in Qatar, when working on the giant Pearl project. He was a strong leader, admired by all of his staff and by his colleagues. I am honoured and glad to have been part of Steve’s large work family. Working with Steve has been enlightening, joyful and always feeling cared for. His support (and challenge) during the start-up years of Pearl was robust, effective and above all, always fair and dependable. We will miss you
I was one of the FSI ‘soldiers’ working in Steve’s Pearl Start-up Team from 2007 to 2012. Since then, I always thought of Steve with gratitude, respect and admiration. He inspired us with clear direction and strong back-up support. With his presence I felt trust and deep friendship, giving me confidence that we would reach our goals. Thank you, Ste...

Misfer AlBidaiwi *** Do you know that Steve hired me as Production Manager and he helped all the way through. I could see his finger prints everywhere at Pearl. Wonderful person. I don’t know what to do for him. One thing I can do as he supported me and many other people I stay committed to him that I will help and support others in the same way! Rest In Peace
Erdal YAZICIOGLU Dear Steve, I dont know where to start and how to express my sadness. You were one of the few people who left mark on my life. I remember the day that we opened Pearl GTL's new Telecom tower with a red carpet and a ribbon. You were always there for us just to make sure we enjoy and love what we do and most probably you cared of us more than anything else. You will be missed.

Mark Pattenden "Look after my people" Steve's clear and very direct message to me when he handed over the baton for Pearl GtL in his office (and publicly repeated the same words at a Town Hall later the same day!). It was the very clear to me that he cared deeply about everyone at Pearl GtL and they loved him equally in return. I first met Steve at the time of the VAR4 for Pearl GtL in the Hague in 2006 and having moved onto other things in Shell, I watched Pearl's and Steve's journey from afar until I came to Ras Laffan for the first time in May 2012. It was then a privilege to work closely with Steve when I joined Pearl GtL in 2014 as we charted the transition between the two of us that would occur less than a year later. Steve was a deep and technically excellent leader but what defined him was his deep care and connection to his people. A leader, a coach, a mentor to so many in Shell. The perfect gentleman and a very gentle man.

Frank Van Wijk On behalf of the Prelude CSU team, I would like to extend our gratitude for the invaluable guidance, insights and very pleasant engagements with Steve during the different project phases. He was truly a remarkable and unique colleague. We wish his family and friends a lot of strength during this very difficult period.
Stephen Temple Struggling to express in words at this time. To Jackie, Katherine and David both Lynne and I send our deepest sympathies for your loss and hope you find comfort and solace in all the pictures and words being entered on this memorial tribute to an exceptional human being. Personally I have lost a colleague, friend and in later life a brother hoping to enjoy many moments in our retirement years. We met in The Hague May 2006 for the Pearl at the first Offshore FSI rollouts. Steve past me, heard my geordie accent and said "Hello Bonny Lad" the term is always entered in any emails or texts between us ever since. For all of you who do not recognise the term it is a local greeting from South Shields our home town here in the UK. When he spoke I knew in an instant he was from only a few miles from where we both grew up, yet never crossed paths. We found out later both our fathers had met in the one of the River Tyne Shipyards and often reflected on our upbringing. Steve became my inspiration, mentor and counsellor on my time in Pearl. His guidance throughout my time on Prelude helped me through many challenges and successes we faced as you will have read from past colleagues. The world has lost one exceptional "BONNY LAD" Steve will probably be laughing at that right now. Your mate Stevie T
Hans Mooren Steve and I worked together for many years to improve the business further. He knew the business so well and was a solid people person and what a safety leader. I still value all the moments I travelled and worked with Steve particularly in the last few years supporting our assets with so much energy. We didn’t need many words to engage because we both knew what was needed and how to improve the business. It is such a tragic loss and impactful to hear this sad news. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Family, friends and colleagues.

Hans Mooren I met Steve for the first time in Pearl in 2010 when he was showing me the great place and what was done in Pearl for us to learn from for the Kasaghan project. Thereafter we worked together many times and visited places like Korea, Perth, Bintulu, Russia, India, Brisbane several times to support assets. Such a charismatic leader. Steve will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
Where to start after receiving such sad news? I have known Steve since 2010 when we were preparing for the start-up of Pearl GTL and in the next 10 years we always worked together very closely. It has been such a pleasure to work with Steve. Always open to listen to ideas and ready to give it a go if he saw the merits. He would never dismiss the vi...

I met Steve first time on Pearl. He opened my eyes for people, cultures and complexity. Since then Steve was around me in Australia, South Korea, Kazakhstan and Pennsylvania as role model, mentor, supporter and friend. Now he had to leave still so young. Steve will be greatly missed by all of us.
From the A&I PU at Stanlow, through, Nanhai, Pearl, Prelude and latterly Pennsylvania Chemicals I have known, trusted and relied upon Steve's judgement, skill and council. He was an inspiration, always ready to listen, help and advise. He will be sorely missed by us all.

Steve, it is rare in a work setting you meet someone you can turn to for discussions on both work and personal topics.
