26 Dec 1923 - 30 Jan 2015Celebrating the Life of Grandad and ( Gon Gon) Great Grandad Laifoo 26/12/1923 – 30/01/2015 Age 91 Born on Thursday Island to parents Mary Chin On and Thomas Laifoo One of Nine children all now deceased Grandad grew up and went to school on Thursday Island and completed his studies at Charters Towers. His parents were Chinese Merchants and were involved in the Pearling industry. At the outbreak of the war Grandad served in the Thursday Island Home Guard and later left the Island and worked on several jobs including the Kuranda railway line and other ventures in Mackay . When he returned to T.I. he operated a Taxi service with partners and met and married the love of his life Margaret Hodges our Grandmother and lived on Hargrave street where the children grew up with lovely neighbours on Old Hargrave Street the Kaprisis, Berolas, Takais, Laifoos, Ahmats, Wymarras, Tatipatas and BinTahls. Grandad worked as Baker, Taxi driver and Waterside worker often working two jobs to support his family. On retirement he managed the Tamwoy Town Grocery Store which is fondly remembered by many friends and youngsters who would frequent the shop. Grandad and Grandma Laifoo moved to Cairns in 2003 and Grandma passed away in 2005. Grandad chose to remain in Cairns near family and friends and enjoyed the happy remainder of his life with visits and support from relatives, family and friends. He is survived by his 7 children, 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
