Marty Reynolds This trip to Nuevo Progreso, Mexico was special. After we walked over the bridge, Scott encountered children from Mexico that were begging for money. He was intensely troubled by this and gave away all of the money he had to them. After we left he wanted to talk about why. He always, everywhere, had a tender heart for anyone that was hungry, suffering, or in need.

Marty Reynolds For a short time we owned a home in Leakey. This actually was located at a place called Flatrock where Paula and her family would visit during the summers of her childhood. So it was a special place. As you can see from the pictures, Scott was always busy there collecting bugs or fishing.
Marty Reynolds There was a house being built next door and it has a considerable pile of scrap lumbar. Scott and Nathan constructed roller blading jumps as well as a pretty decent fort.

Marty Reynolds As our cabin on the Frio river was being built, we would visit it on the weekends. There is a piece of wood, placed between the exterior rock wall and the interior wood wall, which has all of our names (Marty, Paula, Matthew, Lindsay, Nathan, and Scott) and the date 6-13-2004. It is still there and would require tearing out the wall to see again. Maybe some day far aware in the future it will be found.
Marty Reynolds Except from our 2007 Christmas Letter: Scott is a sophomore at Tivy High School and has had a great year thus far. He’s the proud owner of Mazda he paid half for, works at Scholtzky’s, and his grades are good. Yea! He’s not sure what he wants to do after high school, but is thinking college-bound. We’re real proud of all 4 of our kids. Each has had their own obstacles to face and overcome, and we see many blessings of success and good things in store for them.
Marty Reynolds Part of a letter I wrote to Scott when I was thinking about how, on a hike, he would always stop and pick wildflowers for his mom.

Marty Reynolds Some of the times I think Scott was happiest and at the most peace was when he was in Leakey, in a kayak, floating and fishing on the Frio River. These memories are dear to me.
Marty Reynolds Christmas 2006 in Kerrville. The cat, Mr. C, that Scott and Nathan brought home one day is now part of the family. Paula's parents, Bob and Kathy, came up and joined us.
Marty Reynolds In March, after a 6 day course, I got a certification to rent a large sailboat. In April, Scott, Nathan, and Paula joined me for a test sail in Galveston bay so the kids could get comfortable maneuvering a 39 foot sailboat and practice man-overboard drills with me. At the end of June we went to the British Virgin Islands and did a bareboat charter for one week. It was an amazing time and created many memories. We celebrated Scott's 17th birthday in the islands. He was a great sailor.

Marty Reynolds Scott lived in Kerrville through 2017 and 2018 and worked at a restaurant called 1011 Bistro. He rented a house on Jefferson street with a roommate. He ended up adopting a black Lab mix puppy that he named "Luna." He ended up losing her. Many months later he was volunteering in an animal shelter and was assigned to a Black lab and it was "Luna." The Hill Country Community Journal wrote an article about this.
Marty Reynolds Of course, this is not a picture of Scott, but it is a picture of something that happened in 2017 that Scott was instrumental in. At the time, Scott was living in a recovery house here in Kerrville. A mother cat had recently had a litter of kittens and there was only one remaining. Scott and I had lunch together that day. We had just lost our last cat due to old age and I knew Paula had been yearning to have another cat, but we were going to wait until we came across a kitten or cat that needed a good home. I brought Sienna home with me that day and ever since then she had given Paula and I a lot of joy. She is even more special and dear to me now because of the connection between her and Scott.
Marty Reynolds Scott had been living in Austin in 2019. In the spring, he spent a few months in Bowling Green, Kentucky for a recovery program at The Bridge to Recovery. After a few months in Nashville, he returned back to Austin and was living in a Oxford home. Paula and I visited him in December and he was doing amazingly well. We took a hike up to a special place for us called Mount Bonnell. It was a great day that I will always cherish.
Marty Reynolds A visit to Dallas in October to see Scott. We were actually able to ride the elevator up to the top of Reunion Tower. The year 2000 will always be remembered as when COVID came. This was also a special year for Scott. He told me that had the longest period of recovery that he had ever experienced! I am so grateful that he had experienced half a year in sobriety. Sadly, at the end of the year, his struggles with addiction returned. I hesitate sharing this publicly, but Scott was always open and honest with others. I believe that he would want his memories to be shared with honesty and candor. It has been a heart-breaking and gut-wrenching journey for him and also for his family. We so desperately wanted to help him. More than once over the years, when I would be asking Scott what he would like or need for an upcoming birthday or Christmas present, he would say "Dad, please use that money and donate to help someone like me that is struggling even more with addiction." He always wanted to help others.

Marty Reynolds One week ago, I learned that my son, Scott, had tragically died. He was only 32 years of age. This has hit me harder, deeper, and more profoundly than anything I have ever experienced in my life. A gut punch to the soul. The deeper you love, the more it hurts. I believe every parent has likely felt the same with the loss of a child. We have a sense of duty, out of everlasting love, to nurture and protect our children from harm. When something like this happens, it is truly devastating. Reflecting on Scott, one of his most endearing qualities was a kindness and empathy towards others. I noticed this when he was at a very young age. He was 10 years old when we took him on a day trip to Mexico. I had given each of the children some money to buy souvenirs with. After we crossed the bridge and he encountered children begging for money, he immediately gave them everything he had. The rest of the day he was deeply troubled and asked if we could do the same. Growing up and driving through the city, whenever we’d stop at a traffic light and there was a homeless person asking for money, Scott often wanted to give them any money he had, or he would ask if we could get some food at a drive-through and bring it back to them. Throughout his adult life, a desire to help others in need remained as a steadfast and defining quality of his sweet soul. Scott had a love for being outdoors and for fishing. I think he was happiest when on the water. One of the most precious photographs I have is when he was fishing from a kayak on the Frio river. Sadly, Scott spent most of his life struggling with addiction. He was open and upfront with this, so I know he would not mind me sharing. Without a doubt, I know that he sincerely wanted to overcome this. Initially, I used to believe that addiction was primarily a matter of choice or free-will. With time, as I became more aware by learning about it and listening to the stories from others, it became clear to me that, like most things in life, this is not all black or white. Instead, there are many shades of gray. I learned that there are huge differences in an individual person’s tendency to addiction. Some people are fortunate to have a minimal tendency for addiction. Others can have a moderate or strong tendency which allows them to be capable of achieving recovery. A few, like Scott, have a powerful and dominating addictive drive that makes sobriety so difficult to achieve and sustain. Over the years, understanding this variation in each person’s addictive tendency has allowed me to have ever increasing compassion and empathy for anyone that struggles with addiction. I have no doubt that Scott, like many others, deeply and sincerely wanted to find sustained sobriety. I will never know if this was even possible for him. I do know that he struggled and tried to find sobriety with all his heart and soul. Sadly, he lost this battle. About the only comfort I can find, at this time, is knowing that Scott is finally at peace. I also know that, throughout his life, he always knew that he was deeply loved by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Our family is creating a Memorial website to share pictures and stories from Scott’s life. Later this week, when it is ready, I will post a link for this site. Friends and family will be welcome to add their own memories of Scott with additional pictures, stories, or comments. Our family is having a private gathering later this week to remember and reflect on Scott’s life. Scott regularly attended AA meetings in Austin and developed many close friendships over the years. There is a possibility that a memorial gathering will be held in Austin as well. This would likely follow the noon AA meeting where Scott commonly attended. At some future date, our family will scatter Scott’s ashes in the places where he found the most joy and happiness.

Lindsay Reynolds These are the last photos I have of us together, taken in September. Scott and I both hate photos of ourselves, so it's kind of a miracle that these exist. I'm so glad they do. That day was a good one. We went to Kerbey Lane Cafe for breakfast, and ran around Austin listening to Caamp. I remember that day, a song called Vagabond came on. When the music picked up toward the end of the song, he got really into it, and sang the following lines so loud it was more of a yell: "My heart does beat like a Cherokee drum And in the morning when that sun does come One hundred miles an hour in the fast lane..." He was happy, smiling, full of life. That is how I want to remember him.

Lindsay Reynolds Visiting Scott in WA. I'm pretty sure this was 2015.
Lindsay Reynolds From my mom: On Sunday, March 10, 2019, I drove Mema up to visit Scotty while he was in a rehab program. It was a more lax program and we were able to take Scotty out for the afternoon. This rehab was out in the country not all that far from Driftwood. We drove to Wimberley and sat down by a creek while Scotty skimmed rocks in the creek. I so enjoyed watching him do this!!! Scotty wanted to eat at Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood, so that's where we ate. Scotty lovingly cut Mema's meat up for her.
Lindsay Reynolds In 2012, I met up with mom and Scott on a trip to Seattle.
