Amrit Grewal Hardeep as a young boy

    1980

Jasmine Grewal My dad when he was younger. Not sure about exact date or location, but certainly on one of his voyages abroad.

Jasmine Grewal Dad giving us blue steel, before blue steel was invented.

Jasmine Grewal Dad doing what he loved to do in his spare time. When I lived in SG for six months on a work secondment, I'd spend time with Dad doing various things. I remember on one occasion we played tennis at the courts at his place in River Valley. I bumped into a couple of friends and they thought Dad was my coach because he had me doing laps, burpees and god knows what other exercises. I was a little embarrassed to admit he was my dad, but secretly I was proud he was mistaken as my coach. I remember I told him afterwards and Dad found it hilarious. I miss you so much Dad.

Jasmine Grewal Dad in his early days at Pioneer, showing us his love for corn. I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who spoke so passionately about corn as my dad. As you can imagine, not the most riveting subject for a 10 year old, but that didn't stop him. How I wish I could hear you speak about corn (or any field crop for that matter!) right now. Dad - you had so many passions, and your job was certainly one of them.

Jasmine Grewal Dad was infamous for giving sweaty hugs, the sweatier the better. Here is me trying to evade one of them, with little success. This was in Sri Lanka - a trip I had planned with my boyfriend (now husband) in our early years of dating. I remember getting off the phone with Dad one day and racking my brain as to how to explain to Matt that Dad had just invited himself, my mom and his colleague Brenda onto this trip. Thankfully Matt is one of the chillest guys and didn't protest too much. To this day, that trip was one of my all time favourites. Dad - thanks for having zero qualms about gatecrashing your daughter's romantic holidays - you made the trip incredibly special. I won't ever have a hopper (or sambal) without thinking of you.

    2016Hong Kong

Rohan Grewal One of many family hikes. This one was particularly memorable as Jasmine and I brought our significant others with us. Dad loved to hike, usually early in the day. I suppose it gave him a sense of peace and accomplishment before embarking on the rest of his day. He always made an effort to have us join him (despite our often resistance!) Doing activities dad loved will take on a new meaning now. Grateful for all the good things he encouraged us to do.

    Jul 2016Switzerland

Jasmine Grewal When I got my first bonus I told Dad that I wanted to treat him, Mom and Amar to a hiking trip to Switzerland. It was the least I could do given all the holidays he had spoilt me and my brothers with. We were set to go - I had booked the flights and air bnb. We arrived in Basel and just needed to buy some train tickets to Lauterbrunnen. I pulled out my card to pay for the tickets and Dad just smiled and said he would get these. Little did we know that train tickets in Germany without some sort of rail pass are EXTORTIONATE - I think roundtrip rail tickets ended up being more expensive than the flights and the air bnb combined. He didn't flinch though, and he continued to let me claim this trip as "my treat". Dad - you had a heart of gold and you spoilt us, not just with things, but with experiences, knowledge, food and so much more. Thanks for giving us adventures that could fill two life times.

Gouri JC This picture is of Hardeep at his and Amrit's traditional Christmas party (which they were kind enough to include me and mine in, always). I remember Hardeep as being in his element here, purveyor and slicer of the meat and taking care of everyone before himself. These are the words that come to mind when I think of Hardeep: kind, authentic, humorous, larger than life, family man. My mother-in-law had an instant crush on him this year (December 2017), and he was mighty tickled by the idea later (perhaps a little embarrassed, but always gracious). Rest in peace, Hardeep.

Jet Parma Remembering Hardeep. My deepest sympathies, Amy, Rohan, Jasmine, Amar, mum Tej, Hardeep’s siblings, relatives and friends. It was in 1997 when I first met Hardeep for a job interview. I clearly remember feeling uneasy. He was all business and serious until halfway through the interview when he glanced again at my CV and noticed that we had the same birthday. Apparently, he was amused. It raised an unforgettable smile to his face and triggered his usual playful remark: I like you already. That was the beginning of what had been an amazing journey with Hardeep - my boss, my colleague and my friend for 24 years. Perhaps one of Hardeep’s incredible gifts is that he could accurately read people. From a single encounter, he would gauge the qualities and potential of a person. This ability came in handy as he built the foundations of the hybrid corn and rice seed industry in Asia. He took in the right people and developed outstanding seed business teams in the region. While some found him headstrong as a business leader, he proved his worth when he consistently delivered business growth while ensuring that his colleagues were equally recognized and rewarded. Hardeep also had incredible clarity of what he wanted in life. He loved nature and the adventures it offered. I vividly recall, on several crop tours in Mindanao, how he would find a way to persuade the whole team to make a quick hike or hill climb after an already very exhausting day in the corn fields. Somehow, he made us do things we thought were too tough to do – like climbing Mt Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines. He believed in meeting challenges head on and believed in people’s inherent ability to overcome obstacles if given the right motivation. Hardeep lived a well-balanced life. But family always came first. I recall how he would fondly mention about how much Amy enjoyed her teaching job and proudly share about his mum’s outreach programs in India; and on how his children were doing so well in their respective careers. He looked forward to family occasions but always opened his home to friends and colleagues. Hardeep loved his work but he also made sure that he was keeping a healthy lifestyle. Doing regular exercise and eating healthy were all part of his daily routine. So, the news of his sudden passing was surreal. It was so overwhelming, confusing and puzzling. We ask ourselves, why now? Why so sudden? Why at this time when he was ready and looking forward to retirement? This brings to my mind one of Hardeep’s favorite remarks whenever there would be an impasse during discussions at work or, for that matter, on just about any subject that we could not sort out at that time. He would be quick to say, “It is what it is.” Perhaps we can take comfort in the notion that this untimely loss may be Hardeep’s way to re-awaken us to life’s fragility, its brevity, its uncertainty. So that we do our best to live life to the full, as he had. That we take life’s many gifts and make good. His message to us about life may well be to live it, love it and let it. Thank you, Hardeep, for making us a part of your wonderful life. Truly a life well-lived. Daghang Salamat, Bai. Let perpetual light shine upon you. Forever rest in peace, my dear friend.
