Rik and I were friends in elementary school at Laurel elementary, but we became even better friends in junior high. we both loved music and sports. I was lucky enough to stay at his home from time to time, and he came out to our farm to stay over with me. At Harlan Community High School, were so lucky to have Ray Cramer as our band director. As you...

Steve Lyons Rik was a master collaborator. He was always the first to reach out to share his passion for music and people. He was a gentleman, but brought such passion when he stepped on the podium. I owe him so much - he inspired me, supported me, and was equally amazing with my own students. Rik my friend - you will be missed but certainly never forgotten.
I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Hansen family for your loss. I had the great fortune of working with Rik as a colleague in the Department of Music at SCSU, including collaborations on several occasions as a faculty soloist with the Wind Ensemble. Rik was such a consummate musician and teacher, always encouraging, inspiring, a...
Abbi Burris "Music is well said to be the speech of angels." -Eric Carlyle Heaven gained a musical angel and noble soul in the late evening on the 16th of September: my father, aka “papa”, aka “Maestro Rik Hansen.” Although it often feels he left this earth all too soon (age 69), he lived a life filled with passion, dedication, purpose, and meaning. He fought a tough and complex battle and passed away from complications of Leukemia and later diagnosed-Parkinson's Disease. My mother and I were blessed to be at his bedside at during his final moments (after a long separation due to COVID). He had just discharged from the hospital and laid to rest that same evening at Our Lady of Peace Hospice Home. We could feel an overwhelming sense of him finally being able to rest in peace. Even in his final moments, he made a point to make the timing "just right." When in is darkest moments, Rik always found ways to bring forth light, humor, joy, and hope to those around him. During our family's time of seeking ways to "ride the waves" of grief and our loss, we found an immense amount of comfort from the words and messages of those whom my father inspired. I am so proud to hear of all the stories from those lives my father touched-both professionally and personally. I did not realize the extent of those he influenced, both locally and internationally. Due to the complications of COVID-19, our family made the decision to hold off on doing an in-person memorial service. In the meanwhile, this is meant to be a place for those from around the globe to come together to share memories, music, photos, and expressions to celebrate Rik's life and legacy. Papa-You have left behind a life and legacy of bountiful achievements to inspire us. Yet, your impact comes from an even deeper place because of your character. You helped to build up and elevate those lives you touched. Even in the early stages of your musical career you once stated, “I always tell them I am more interested in their brains and hearts than their fingers.” On the sands of time you have left your footprints with everlasting artistic musical inspiration, messages to rise above barriers, embrace differences, and to always dream big. Everyone shall recall your story and remember the messages that came from deep within your heart.
Rik was a wonderful teacher, conductor, musician, and friend. His influence was wide and far reaching. So many of our current Minnesota music educators have modeled their teaching and conducting styles after Rik. I was so lucky to have worked with him for thirty plus years. He will be missed by all of us.
I want to extend my sympathies, love and support to Sheila and all of Rik’s family. During the 30 years that Rik and I worked together at SCSU, he was my “MVC” (most valued colleague). His tireless efforts and genuine passion for guiding wind-band students to develop the skills and musical sensitivity which enabled them to make expressive, high-le...
I wish to convey my deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Dr. Rik Hansen. Rik was not just a mentor for me during my graduate degree, but a second father. Rik saw and believed things in me that I did not see or believe myself. Rik shared his professional skills, his passion for music and life and his heart and even soul with me. We ha...
Dr. Hansen was pivotal in not only my musical education but also in how to live and keep pushing on in the most adverse of situations. He was one of the holiest men I have ever met, as he not only believed, but he lived the virtues of what he stood for. I was able to learn how to conduct and write for wind bands and ensembles because of his dedica...
I am so sorry to hear of Rik's passing. He was truly a great man. For me, he was a driving force and continues to impact me on a daily basis. In two short years, his passion and commitment to musical excellence set the stage for my entire career. Not a day goes without me thinking of him.
Dr. Rik Hansen was tremendously powerful figure in my professional and personal life. I have never known a more musically intense individual. On and off the podium, Rik exuded passion for having music in our lives. His keen aesthetic responses in rehearsals and performances inspired me to give more of myself and to expect more of those around us. ...
Rik was in his own world, his own glorious musical world, and invited us all to join him. It didn’t matter if the audience was big or small. It didn’t matter if we were in a rehearsal. At that moment, what we were doing was the most important thing in the world. He loved that moment. And when it was over, when the last note rang through the hall, ...
