    OBITUARY Richard "Dick" Bennett 1940 - 21 Jan 2021 He was the son of Clyde H. and Audra Bennett of the Kesling Mill Rd Area. He was a graduate of Buckhannon Upshur High School. He went into the United States Air Force and was a flight engineer by trade. He served as a Ranch Hand May 68 - May 69. He received a silver star and a distinguished flying ...

    Christine Bennett Staff Sergeant Richard C. Bennett distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as a UC-123 Flight Engineer near Trouc Giang, Republic of Vietnam, on 7 Apr 1969. On that date, Sergeant Bennett was against a heavily defended hostile forces base camp. On the second pass, the spray engine on Sergeant Bennett's aircraft caught fire. Leaving his protected position in the midst of intense ground fire, Sergeant Bennett proceeded through the unprotected fuselage and fought the fire, disregarding his own safety to protect the lives of his crew members. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Bennett reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. Unfortunately, I do not have the citation for his silver star.     Christine Bennett Law Enforcement We would be out or at a restaurant and it could even be in another state, and people would come up to say hello or just shake his hand. He literally knew everyone. It always did kind of freak me out though, because a good majority of those were people he had arrested that just wanted to thank him for being fair and an honest man concerning whatever their situation.

One time he started singing “Together...Again”...but that’s all he would sing. It drove the pilot crazy! As your father, I’m sure you looked upon him as your hero. Your father’s gallantry in combat and award of the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross etched his name forever more as a hero of this great nation.

    Christine Bennett Memories - Christine Most people don’t know but when I was in basic training/tech school- right out of high school, my dad was retiring from the unit. We were passing the baton, so to speak. A few weeks before I finished tech school, my dad found out our unit had been activated and I was being deployed to Saudi Arabia/UAE as soon as I returned. My dad pulled his retirement papers and activated with the unit - so that I would not be over there alone.

    Brad Phillips POSTING DATE JANUARY 24, 2021 It is with a heavy heart that I write this memoir about my ole buddy Dick Bennett. Previous to my becoming a pilot I had known Dick from working at the airport but not until I started flying on July 13, 2005 did I become acquainted with him. His daughter Lynda and I were classmates and we have been friends since our school days. Dick and I became friends because we had a common interest in airplanes and flying. I remember when I started flying I began to notice that Dick was never far from the pilots lounge. He would always come in to check to see if the plane needed fuel or if there was anything that needed done. One thing is for sure he knew the importance of keeping the fuel tanks full in a plane! I would often come in from a flight and I would no more than hit the tarmac I would notice the fuel truck pulling out to fuel up the trainer. He would often tell us stories in the lounge on days we could not fly due to inclement weather. My instructor Joe Rose added to the stories with his awesome knowledge of flying helicopters in VietNam. Dick took special interest in my prior history and photographs of the airport dating back to the 1960's. He made it a point to get the photos that I dedicated to the airport were hung on the walls of the pilots lounge. Dick loved the airport and was definitely proud of it. The runways were always clear in the winter and the grounds were well groomed all summer long. It was a big job to take care of all of the maintenance but I never heard him say that it was too much for him to take care of or anything negative about the job. I will always respect him for that. My fondest memory is the day of my solo flight. May 12, 2007. I was oblivious to the fact that on your first solo flight it is MANDATORY that your shirt tail gets cut! I had my favorite shirt on and I tried everything in the world to keep him from cutting it. To no avail I gave in and as you can see in the picture he was grinning ear to ear.. He loved every minute of it and as I look back the sacrifice of that shirt was well worth the joy it brought him. I framed the shirt with his picture and have it on my wall to this day. I know all of the folks who were associated with Dick over the years will miss him dearly.. I know I will. Rest in peace my ole friend we will meet again one day.
