Barry Joseph Jersey City winter
Barry Joseph This is a letter from Paul's dad to his mom, when she winter in Florida, about taking care of their 2 year old in her absence.
Barry Joseph My favorite line from the letter - "Our precious boy"
From his dad, Ben, in Letter to Reina in Florida, February 8, 1934 I must tell you something very cute your darling son did yesterday morning. I took him upstairs after he had been calling for you and after running into our bedroom realized you were not present. He insisted upon getting on the bed and when he got there he picked up the blanket t...
Barry Joseph 6 photos of Paul with cousins from late '30s to 1941
From cousin Jill Seager, on the occasion of his 70th: "All the cousins played tennis on the red clay in West End and then when we lived in Fair Haven. They told me I had to hit like a boy and run fast if I wanted to play with them. I have appreciated having lots of male cousins since I only had a sister and have enjoyed being friends with them for...
From cousin Jane Albaum on his 70th: “From the time Paul and I were born, he lived in Jersey City and I in Newark. Almost every Sunday, until we moved to California during World War 2, we would go visit for Sunday lunch. Invariably Paul would have a project going in the playroom: a major construction of blocks or a giant structure made from an erec...

From cousin Jimmy Hershman on Paul’s 70th: “I could go on for quite awhile recalling everything that Paul and I did together as we were growing up. Since I have known Paul since birth (he displaced me as the "cute" baby) it is hard to single out one particular memory. What does stand out, 'tho is the experiences of my taking the train to New York f...
From cousin Jane Albaum on Paul’s 70th: “In the early 40's, Paul and I went to a sleep away camp called Infield Acres. As is usual at such places, the campers put on plays. Since Paul was a good piano player, he got the part of Mozart in a play about the young composer and he impressed everyone with his playing of the early Mozart piano pieces.”

From Jim Padula, Newark Academy Alum, on Paul’s 70th: “I remember that everyday after school we played touch football in the field outside the bursar's window. Paul was the undisputed broken field runner. You could never tag him.”
From Elmer “Twig” Branch, Newark Academy Alum, baseball teammate, on Paul’s 70th: “Paul has a great sense of humor. We served on a couple of things together - the glee club, United World Federalists club (in retrospect, I don’t know what I was doing). I remember one baseball game trip when I was in the truck of Don Taliaferro’s car going to the Ora...

My mother loved to tell the story (and we loved to hear it) about the time my dad took her skiing for the first time. She was not terribly athletic and didn’t like heights. But by this time in their courtship “I knew this was the man I wanted to marry so I better learn how to ski”. So there they were at the base of the ski lift. She was TERRIFIED....

Eleanor and Dan Fogel, shared on the occasion of Paul’s 70th: “One of our first delightful experiences with you was at a party you gave many years ago. Barry Joseph Jill Joseph on the occasion of Paul’s 70th birthday: “We all went camping together for a weekend. Paul clearly enjoyed himself, despite the rotten weather, trying to keep a campfire going, and the NINE kids we had along (he earned a merit badge!). At the end of the weekend, while we were all packing the cars, Marlee’s voice rose above the din, “I don’t want to see that tent ever, ever again!! Put that tent in someone else’s car.” That was the end of Paul’s camping days (but he got to keep the badge!)”

Debby Joseph This was my moms favorite picture from Barry’s Bar Mitzvah. It was taken at the end of the “day party” and ironically it was a candid shot. She liked to tell us she had just finished telling my dad how happy she was how everything had gone all day. The photographer came around the corner and saw them hugging and told them to turn around.

Abby Mason, Niece, on the occasion of his 70th birthday: “In the late 80s, I was able to get to know Paul better, in the eyes of young adult. I still viewed him as subdued until one evening Marlee decided we should go out for a nice Chinese dinner. Marlee and Debby were dressed sharply, as usual, and I had an acceptable outfit also. Then Uncle Paul...

Barry Joseph At the planting fields arboretum, which he loved, we celebrated his 70th birthday.
Barry Joseph Howard Jacoby shared this story on the occasion of Paul’s 70th birthday: Paul Joseph in the 1990s became the mandarin of adult education at North Shore Synagogue, not the Chinese bureaucracy mandarin, bur rather the intellectual or literary person of position and influence. The adult education program at North Shore Synagogue is among the best at any synagogue in America. Its leaders are Rabbi Darryl Crystal and Dr. Paul Joseph. Paul has chaired the Adult Education Committee for many years and is responsible for its smooth and effective operation. The Institute for Adult Jewish Education is a consortium of synagogues in northeast Nassau that has run annual programs in the Fall and Winter since the early 1960s. The IAJE embraces over a dozen synagogues from all branches of Judaism and its attendance ranges from 300 to 800. Paul first made his mark in the early 1980s when he and Marlee, then a synagogue vice-president, got over 100 North Shore members to join IAJE when in previous years the temple’s contingent was around 30. His finest hour, clearly Churchillian, came three years ago when he led IAJE to solid financial footing and probably saved it from dying. For 35 years, each IAJE synagogue paid $2.50 per member and kept the subscription fees paid by its own members. Some synagogues actually made money but North Shore had a mounting deficit as its membership grew but the number who subscribed to IAJE shrunk. There was a good possibility that the largest synagogue would withdraw from IAJE. Paul conceived a fairer financing system: reducing the synagogue tax to $1.00 per member and IAJE keeps all subscription fees. He convinced a majority of the IAJE synagogues to adopt his radical new proposal.
Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics, Winthrop University Hospital, shared this story on the occasion of Paul’s 70th birthday: One of the great pleasures of being the Chairman of Pediatrics is to talk to medical students and residents about their visions for the future. Dr. Joseph was our family pediatrician, and we remember his care with gratitude. It wasn’t just that he was really smart, and caring, and thorough, but, also, that he was an excellent diagnostician. For one of our children, that meant that he pursued the mystery of his condition, and insisted that it be understood and treated. How very grateful ...

Below is a message in response to Paul’s obit in the NYTimes: April 26, 2020 May Paul's memory be a blessing. I had only been the assistant rabbi at North Shore for a few years before Paul moved to queens but he is still dearly missed. What a sweet, sweet man. Jaimee Shalhevet, Syosset, NY
Barry Joseph This is the short obit that will run nationwide in the New York Times. Below is the text of the full obit: Dr. Paul Ronnie Joseph, of Forest Hills, NY, passed away at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at the age of 87. The cause of death was COVID-19 related illness. Paul was born and raised in Jersey City, son of a town doctor and a member of a family who were the local department store magnates. At five years old he weekly traveled on his own via public transportation to NYC for piano lessons on East 72nd Street. After college at Yale and medical school at NYU he served in the U.S. Army as a medical attache to the Iranian government. He then found himself in the Philippines in charge of an American effort by the CDC to study a vaccine trial for cholera in the midst of a significant epidemic in the region. He returned to complete his pediatric residency and soon opened, in Syosset, NY, a private practice that served the children of Long Island for the next 39 years. He served on the board of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, directed the North Shore Synagogue Continuing Adult-Education Program, summered at the Chautauqua Institution, and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He was the beloved husband to first Marlee and then Carol. He was the devoted father of Debby and Barry, and later of step-daughter Lily Shapiro.
