From his dad, Ben, in Letter to Reina in Florida, February 8, 1934 I must tell you something very cute your darling son did yesterday morning. I took him upstairs after he had been calling for you and after running into our bedroom realized you were not present. From cousin Jane Albaum on Paul’s 70th: “In the early 40's, Paul and I went to a sleep away camp called Infield Acres. As is usual at such places, the campers put on plays. Since Paul was a good piano player, he got the part of Mozart in a play about the young composer and he impressed everyone with his playing of the early Mozart piano pieces.”

Paul clearly enjoyed himself, despite the rotten weather, trying to keep a campfire going, and the NINE kids we had along (he earned a merit badge!). At the end of the weekend, while we were all packing the cars, Marlee’s voice rose above the din, “I don’t want to see that tent ever, ever again!! Put that tent in someone else’s car.” That was the end of Paul’s camping days (but he got to keep the badge!)”

Barry Joseph Howard Jacoby shared this story on the occasion of Paul’s 70th birthday: Paul Joseph in the 1990s became the mandarin of adult education at North Shore Synagogue, not the Chinese bureaucracy mandarin, bur rather the intellectual or literary person of position and influence. The adult education program at North Shore Synagogue is among the best at any synagogue in America. Its leaders are Rabbi Darryl Crystal and Dr. Paul Joseph. Paul has chaired the Adult Education Committee for many years and is responsible for its smooth and effective operation. The Institute for Adult Jewish Education is a consortium of synagogues in northeast Nassau that has run annual programs in the Fall and Winter since the early 1960s. The IAJE embraces over a dozen synagogues from all branches of Judaism and its attendance ranges from 300 to 800. Paul first made his mark in the early 1980s when he and Marlee, then a synagogue vice-president, got over 100 North Shore members to join IAJE when in previous years the temple’s contingent was around 30. His finest hour, clearly Churchillian, came three years ago when he led IAJE to solid financial footing and probably saved it from dying. For 35 years, each IAJE synagogue paid $2.50 per member and kept the subscription fees paid by its own members. Some synagogues actually made money but North Shore had a mounting deficit as its membership grew but the number who subscribed to IAJE shrunk. There was a good possibility that the largest synagogue would withdraw from IAJE. Paul conceived a fairer financing system: reducing the synagogue tax to $1.00 per member and IAJE keeps all subscription fees. He convinced a majority of the IAJE synagogues to adopt his radical new proposal.

Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics, Winthrop University Hospital, shared this story on the occasion of Paul’s 70th birthday: One of the great pleasures of being the Chairman of Pediatrics is to talk to medical students and residents about their visions for the future. Almost all muse about continuing to be academically actively, cont...

Paul Joseph was always such a kind man to me over the years that the Joseph family has come into my life. Over the years-from high school high jinks to graduations to holidays and dinners-I got to know him and his warmth, humor and intellect. I know that he was proud of his children and grandchildren and the loving bonds between them. May his m...

Alan Joseph Great day in NYC! And Paul’s hat rocked!

Liz DeMeyer, niece, I met and really got to know Uncle Paul later in my life. He was such a quiet, kind man and I feel truly blessed to have known him. One memory I have is when Debby, Barry and I were helping Uncle Paul set up a profile for a dating app. We all laughed so hard. That was such a great night!!!

Fall 1981. I drove by myself from NJ to Long Island. Don’t remember what event it was for, but upon my arrival, Paul greets me in the kitchen and offers me a beer. First time anyone offered me beer in my life. Thought it was pretty funny

Marc Joseph The infamous Camping Trip no one believed had occurred!!

These pictures are all so amazing. My very favorite always is the one of Marlee and Paul from Barry's bar mitzvah. It's how I always thought of them. He infused so much love and joy into every family and friend event, no matter how casual the interaction. I think it's the genetic code that enables all Joseph's to move through the world collecting f...

It was a happy day---and a beautiful sunny, clear one---when Paul and Carol got married. I was thrilled that they had found each other and the prospect of years of happiness together. I think they had a great deal of happiness---mutual joy in the grandchild and children, the rich cultural life of music, theater, books, and study. It was a good th...

Abby Mason These were from the family trip to Rome. I especially love the photo sequence of Paul as he slowly falls asleep! He was a seasoned cat napper!

I remember fondly the many Passover seders I spent with Paul and his family. The atmosphere was cheerful, the food was terrific and the company was wonderful. I especially remember the original seders we shared and Barry leading them.

Alan Joseph The whole group that went on the aforementioned camping trip

A few years ago, Deb was telling me about the family’s upcoming annual trip to Chautauqua. Deb said that where they stay had a wrap around covered porch that Dr. Joseph just loved. As Deb described, “even when it rains, my dad can sit outside, relax and read.” That image always stuck with me as so peaceful and wonderful. When Dr. Joseph pass...

    Dad’s eulogy - - - + - - - - - - + - - -Thank you all for coming. And looking at the participants list, of over 100, at each of your names - I can’t tell you how much comfort it brings us. - - - + - - - - - - + - - -I have to acknowledge - I know this is all rather odd. I never pictured myself eulogizing my dad over a computer screen. Nor that whe...

I first met Dr. Joseph in 1986 when I was in high school. Over the years whenever I’d see him, he’d always greet me with warm enthusiasm, genuinely interested to know how I was doing and what I was up to. He had a way of putting you at ease and making you feel remembered. I’m sure this warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit are part and parcel ...

Below is a message in response to Paul’s obit in the NYTimes: April 26, 2020 May Paul's memory be a blessing. I had only been the assistant rabbi at North Shore for a few years before Paul moved to queens but he is still dearly missed. What a sweet, sweet man. Jaimee Shalhevet, Syosset, NY

Barry Joseph This is the short obit that will run nationwide in the New York Times. Below is the text of the full obit: Dr. Paul Ronnie Joseph, of Forest Hills, NY, passed away at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at the age of 87. The cause of death was COVID-19 related illness. Paul was born and raised in Jersey City, son of a town doctor and a member of a family who were the local department store magnates. At five years old he weekly traveled on his own via public transportation to NYC for piano lessons on East 72nd Street. After college at Yale and medical school at NYU he served in the U.S. Army as a medical attache to the Iranian government. He then found himself in the Philippines in charge of an American effort by the CDC to study a vaccine trial for cholera in the midst of a significant epidemic in the region. He returned to complete his pediatric residency and soon opened, in Syosset, NY, a private practice that served the children of Long Island for the next 39 years. He served on the board of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, directed the North Shore Synagogue Continuing Adult-Education Program, summered at the Chautauqua Institution, and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He was the beloved husband to first Marlee and then Carol. He was the devoted father of Debby and Barry, and later of step-daughter Lily Shapiro. He was the dear brother of Carl, and the proud grandfather of Akiva, Mira, Eva and Delia. We first met Paul when he and Marlee moved to Syosset. Not only was he our children's pediatrician, but we became personal friends. From the time of Barry's Brit Milah, Debby's birth, and until we moved to New Jersey in 2013, we shared many wonderful, as well as difficult times together, including the Bar and Bat Mitzvot of Barry and Debby, Confi...

Barry Joseph So THIS happened today. The front page of the Sunday New York Times was top to bottom mini-obits of 1,000 around the country who died due to the Corona virus, to represent the 100,000 we have lost. My dad was listed among them. If you want the digital, the online interactive is so well done: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/24/us/us-coronavirus-deaths-100000.html

Shared by one of his patients after seeing his Obituary in Newsday June 4, 2020 I had planned to use another pediatrician 35 years ago when my baby was born. I ended up meeting Dr Joseph in the hospital, and knew immediately that he was the one I wanted to care for my children. He went out of his way to make sure they got the right care, from the...
