I was very sorry to find out about Nicos passing away. I have good memories with him when we were studying together for our MSC in Manchester. He was a very good friend and he helped me with my problems in that cold city. We lost contact after I went to California and he went to Cambridge. Themis, God bless you and your family Eric Falangas

Ermina Topintzi Nicos with his PhD students - he often liked to come by our dedicated PhD room and chat with us. From L to R: Manos Nistazakis, Ermina Topintzi, Daniel Nankoo, Stavros Fatouros and Costis Vafiadis.
Nicos's competency on dealing with complexity has not only rubbed off on academia but also on people's personal lives. When I was just about to finish my Masters at City University I was contemplating my career options. My ideas were sparsing on following a PhD course wobbling dangerously between topics on trivial applications of control theory... ...

When I went to Cambridge as a 23-year-old, I had never lived outside my hometown before. I was so lucky to befriend the wonderful Ali, and even luckier that my friendship with her meant that I was introduced to her whole wonderful family. Nicos reminded me of my own father, and being invited into the Karcanias house for dinners made Cambridge feel ...

Ermina Topintzi You couldn't possibly come to London and not pay Nicos a visit. Even years after you had finished your studies at City, a chat with Nicos would be a reason to come back. Here with Tania Vasileiadou.

Stavros Kalogeropoulos Nico’s and Themi’s family visiting us at Potamia, Kythnos 29 August 2018
Stavros Kalogeropoulos We are so grieved and shocked for the loss of our Nicos. Nicos and my sister Themis made a great couple exhibiting outstanding and plethoric attributes with impacts on many spheres of activities of our evolving life and they brought up two wonderful children, Alexandra and Aris. We understand that this will be a very difficult period for you all and it is unfortunate and emotionally stressful that it is impossible to be together now. I feel a very lucky individual, privileged to have been close to a great man, an outstanding and great achiever, world known scientist, scholar and a philosopher of life, a great relative and friend. We will miss him very much. Nico’s legacy will accompany us all. I attach a photo of your family’s visit to us in Kythnos in August, 2018. Love you all, Stavros and Marina Kalogeropoulos

My dear Themis, very dear friend, Nikos is present also in us. As I write to you now -- and also during the day, even when I do other irrelevant things -- moments, momentary pictures of Nikos come to me, and of you, Themis, and you, friends, together in your living room. I have the picture of Nikos' face: of his amusement, agreement or not, explan...

Nicos has been a dear colleague and one of the strongest and most passionate ambassadors for engineering and science. I have so many vivid pleasant memories of Nicos. Sanowar Khan Letter of condolences from Professor Andrei Rudskoi, Rector of Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University, St Petersburg, Russia where Nicos was a WC2 Visiting Professor
All my time at City coincided with Nic's presence and much of my work involved him. He was a man of tremendous enthusiasm for his subject with a great intellectual capacity, He was a solid friend with more than an agreeable sense of humour - and never short of an opinion. He is a great loss to his family, friends, City and the wider Control comm...
Nicos was my mentor during my time at City and from Day 1 he gave me unequivocal and unconditional support. I owe him so much! He was a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for so many people over the years. A brilliant scientist and a great man! The news of his illness was shocking and that of his passing truly devastating. The world is a po...
I first met Nicos at a seminar he gave in Athens university, back in 1990. I realised immediately that he was a different kind of person. In just half hour of duscussion I decided to change my plans for postgraduate studies and go with Nicos. Being a student of Nicos was of the best times in my life. Apart from his enormous scientific value he wa...
Nikos was my godfather. Although I didn't get to see him that much I loved him deeply and had him on my mind. What I remember most of him was his eyes, his sparkling eyes full of joy and careness. What a sad and shocking news and it is very difficult to take it in. he was a great friend and mentor to me over the last 19 years. Undoubtedly, he was a top ...
Dearest Themis, Alexandra and Aris, Jonny and I are sending you our love on this day which would have been Nico’s 72nd Birthday. The passion that Nikos Karcanias had for his academic subject and his dedication to his research and his students is well known but this was only one side to his character.
I first met Nicos and his family in the 1970s in Cambridge. We quickly became friends due to their hospitality and warmth. Nicos was a man who wore his knowledge and experience lightly - never needing to flaunt his wide range of interests outside his obviously successful career. His loving nature showed in his continuing care about the poorer peopl...
I was lucky to be a student and friend of Nicos. Nicos tricked me into commencing the PhD expedition into the enchanted world of research where everything is possible. Nicos joined City in 1980 and over the last 40 years he made enormous contribution to City and, of course to his field of systems and control. He was a 'classical' academic who was always ...
I am lucky enough to have known Nicos from a very young age, and I can't remember a time when he wasn't there. He always took a great interest in me. His passion, energy and joie de vivre were infectious, and I feel very sorry to have not seen him during his last years. He will be sorely missed by so many.
It saddens me that all my photos are locked away in storage, so how lovely to see these here of wonderful Nicos, albeit for the most tragic of reasons. Most of all I would have loved to share one of him and Themis throwing the naming ceremony celebration for my son in their beautiful garden. It involved of course homemade Greek cakes with Nicos’s l...
The loss of Nick Karcanias will be felt by many of us at City University who were lucky enough to work with him. May the memories of his wonderful personality and many contributions be celebrated by all. Rest in peace Nick. Ahmed Kovacevic
To my eyes Nicos was a giant! For his scientific achievements. For the way he was combining concepts of Mathematics and Control Theory with Social sciences or Philosophy. For his Homo Universalis personality. For his concrete moral values and his strong political believes. For leading his life according to his believes and values. Not only a great...
Nick was one of the first people that I met when I joined the University in 2011. Prof. Nick was kind, humble and supportive. I found him always happy to help anyone anytime. He wrote an invitation letter on my request for a colleague from my country, although he didn't know me or ever worked with me. He did that just to help because it was his core value. He will be missed greatly. Fauzia Idrees
Nic was a great mentor for me. Although Nic never taught me at City while I was a student he always gave me the positive support to progress my research. It was a twist of fate to become acquainted with Nick over 20 years ago that led to a flourishing friendship and professional partnership in systems research, training, conferencing and publications. I will miss my trips to London to meet with him and the fish & chips lunch we enjoyed together next to City uni. May he rest in peace. My thoughts are with his family. George Konstantopoulos
Nik was one of the key academics I worked with when I started at City many years ago as an administrator. He was great with his colleagues and supported so many. My thoughts are with Nic's family. Q...
Nic was a great colleague and friend at City – he was appointed a few years before me and for many years our offices had doors opposite to each other along the ‘electrical engineering’ corridor. I think it was 1975 or 1976 when I first met Nicos. We all had long hair in those days, but Nicos was in a different league - well over his shoulders. A very striking presence in the tea room in Mill Lane (Cambridge). I got to know him slowly, but we gradually became very good friends, also with Themis of course. There were very long discussions, ...

It is really very difficult for me to write about the great loss of Nicos, I have been trying to do it for some days now but it is not possible. The pain is very strong, his loss is unaffordable. I cannot believe it… He was such a great man, the ideal friend, teacher, coach, researcher, husband, father, grand father... Both my wife Antigoni and mys...
I was 21 years old and he was 25 when we met. It was Christmas 1973, meeting Nicos in a friend's house. His bright personality struck me immediately. I thought to myself, 'I really want to know this...
Such an inspiring man. Each time I met him, I was impressed by his dedication to his research, his students, to Greece and above all to his wonderful family. Alexandra Karcanias Wedding Day, December 1976
Alexandra Karcanias To my darling Kiki, You were so much to so many. It is very difficult for me to put into just a few words everything that you meant to me. I have so many happy and vivid memories from my childhood (our happy life in Cambridge and endless summers in Greece), my teenage years (you tirelessly picking me up after an exhausting week in London when I was out with my friends on a Friday night), always supporting me, encouraging me throughout my studies when I doubted myself. And then when Stella was born... the bond between the two of you was strong from the very beginning - you would visit everyday after work when Stella was in the hospital, coming to cuddle her when I wasn’t able to. Your face always lit up when she was around. Although it breaks my heart that you will not see her grow up, you have had such an impact on her and she will carry this with her forever. You were always such a rock to us all, a comfort, a source of wisdom. Whatever Aris and I wanted, you never refused us. You and mum were an incredible team, we never felt anything but happiness growing up in our nest - full of warmth, delicious meals, lively conversation, beautiful music and unconditional love. A brave fighter to the very end, you were the one giving us strength and courage. I will never forget the words you said to me when you were in hospital last summer from one of your favourite Greek songs: 'O warrior, the victor will be he, who longs the most to live. He who enters the battle to die, is unfit for war.' .... this was you, the victor. You amazed us all with your resilience, determination and relentless will to live. We need to find the strength and use this same resilience now. I still feel like you are with us and always will be, our shining star. Kimisou ageloudi mou.
Nick was one of the key people who helped me start my PhD at City. This is not about Nicos. This is about meta-Nicos, just as I perceived him when our lives overlapped in the mid ‘70s. He came to Cambridge from Manchester shortly after 1974 and together and with some help from our friends, formed the C. U. Greek Society. The following years were exhilarating and productive. Later on our paths diverged but we ne...
We send all our love to Themis, Alexandra, Aris and their families and friends at this very sad time. It’s so great to see photos of them and their lovely Nicos, and to remember the happy times we used to spend together in Cambridge and Hilton. Thinking of you all, and celebrating with you the life of a wonderful man who inspired so many people. Al...
I first met Nicos when I was a teenager, when I spent a lot of time at the Karcanias house, sharing delicious meals cooked by Themis and putting the world to rights. They are some of the happiest memories of my youth and Nicos and Themis have always made me feel like part of the Karcanias family. I remember supper times with Nicos so vividly- he ...
Aris Karcanias The students demo where the greek society participated against racism and increase in fees, Cambridge, UK
Now that the dust of Nicos demise is settling, when the grief of the family dissipates approaching its asymptomatic low, now the knowledge, not just the feeling of his loss, painfully manifests itself. The uniqueness of his mind will be near us no more. It’s like frozen in time. No new data will be processed and any gems he produced soon will be...

Having written thousands of words, these are the hardest anyone has to write. For me, Nicos Karcanias personified the quintessence of science, something I know nothing about. Yet, his passion for social justice, vibrant spirit and zest for life have stayed with me since the first day I met him and I know the same applies to his family, all of whom ...
It has been more than two months since Aris texted me with the expected yet devastating news of Nicos's passing away. A few days after that, he texted me again, telling about the memorial page. For the last two months or so, I tried, in vain, so many times to share my thoughts and feelings on these pages. Every time, I felt paralyzed by the pain, ...
I met Nicos through Themis. Both so kind and intelligent, they were perfect together. It was such a great pleasure to have lunch with them at their house, enjoying the lovely Greek food, the attentive conversation and the warmth of their company. Nicos combined a strong sense of purpose and a legendary dedication to his family and work, with a meas...
Memories of Nicos, Nic, Nick as a much valued academic colleague and as a friend and family man- truly a man for all seasons. I knew Nic for almost 50 years, we met as masters’ students at UMIST in 1972, shared research and friendship through time what are my memories? The family man: visiting us with Themis and a very small Alexandra playing in th...
Like several others I had the privilege of first meeting Nicos on the TPAC Master's course at the Control Systems Centre UMIST in 1972. I soon gained a great respect for his academic abilities and I found him a kind and gentle person who could be very passionate, not only about his studies but also about the political and social issues of the day. ...

A year has passed since Nic left us. I still have so many wonderful memories of the friend, father, grandfather and academic. I think of all of you who are his family, send my love and wish you strength for the future. Gaynor
Dear Nicos, It's been a year, and now, unfortunately not your adorable self, but your memories keep enriching my personal and academic life. Rest in peace, brother. Kadri
Walking around Cambridge I see you in so many places, dear Nicos, and particularly think of you with love and with gratitude that you were my friend on this, your birthday.
