Mary Regier, née Hanania, passed away in Berkeley, California, on December 28 2020. She was 94. She was born in 1926 into a Palestinian family and raised primarily in Jerusalem. An early interest in mathematics and statistics led her to a B.A. (1946) and M.A. (1948) from the American University of Beirut (AUB), and a Ph.D. (1957) from UC Berkeley. In 1958, she married Frank Regier, who moved from the U.S. to Beirut to join her as they both took up faculty positions at AUB. In Beirut they had two sons, Terry and Chris, and the family stayed there until 1984, when Frank was taken hostage for two months during the Lebanese civil war. This precipitated their move to the Cleveland, Ohio area, where Mary taught at Case Western Reserve University until she retired. In 2013 they moved to the Berkeley area to be near Terry, and in 2014 Frank passed away. Mary continued to live independently in the Bay Area until her death. She was smart, energetic, kind, sociable, a gracious hostess, and a really good cook. She is survived by her brother Jack, her two sons Terry and Chris, 4 grandchildren, and 5 nephews and nieces. ****** If you have memories, comments, or photos that you wish to share, we invite you to do so below.
