    Lawrence Clement Snyder's memory board

Lawrence (Larry) Snyder died July 15th, 2021 in Albany, NY. He was a loving spouse, father, grandfather, great grand father, scientist, and nature lover - who is already dearly missed by those who loved him. He is survived by his second wife, Lynn Ashley, his stepson, Justin Carrier, his three children, Lenore Snyder, Evan Snyder, Leland Snyder, his grand children - Jonathan Flores-Snyder and Jovan Snyder, and his great granddaughter, June Cheles Snyder. Larry had a distinguished career in chemistry which began as a PhD research scientist at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey in 1959, and ended several years ago as a distinguished professor at the the State University of New York (SUNY) in Albany. Larry's expertise was in the field of quantum mechanics. His research focused on the crystalline silicon and its defects which had important applications in semiconductors. Throughout his 50 year career, he authored over a hundred scientific papers, including two, early in his career that were published in the prestigious journal, Science. He was also a member of several professional and scientific societies and served as a member of a planning committee and chaired a workshop for the National Academy of Sciences on the need for a national resource for computation in chemistry. Along with his passion for science and science education, Larry loved nature. He had purchased a farm in 1965 with his wife Anne and loved to spend time at it with family and friends. He enjoyed sitting on the porch of his farm house and watching the birds and other wildlife. He also had a keen interest in forest conservation and in restoring chestnut trees to eastern forests. As an active member of the NY chapter of the American Chestnut Association (ACA), he looked forward to the day when he could begin growing genetically modified trees that could resist the chestnut blight fungus.
