Jill Campbell A sweet moment in time. Josh as ring bearer at my daughter , Lauryn’s wedding 11 years ago. ❤️❤️

    May 2011

Sarah Paxton Some of my favorite memories are of the countless hours I spent in the pool with Ellie and Josh, maybe because these blissful days mirrored some of the happiest moments of my own childhood with my siblings in my grandparents' backyard pool. I can still hear Josh's sweet laugh, the excited yell of "CANNONBAAAALL!" as he jumped into the pool with a floaty around his waist to make the biggest possible splash while wearing the biggest smile, eyes sparkling and full of happiness.

    2012

Bonnie Deininger I always look back fondly on my summer with Josh & Ellie. So many great memories with legos, pretend cooking shows, swimming, bowling, and of course, dancing! Praying daily for you Team Phenix.

Jackson Woodall The last time I saw Josh, was right before I moved from Georgia back in 2014. Although it’s been a while, I will never forget his kind face and loving personality, and how he would walk into a room and make everyone in it lighten up and smile to his gregarious personality and funny jokes. He was one of my best friends and nobody will ever forget him. Rest easy. -Jackson

Patrick Holden We have so many wonderful memories of Josh. From meeting him for the first time when he was a shy 5 year old to watching him grow into the boy in these pictures. Not just the best dancer at our wedding, but also so imaginative, determined, funny, kind and so very bright. Always trying to teach us about obscure characters from games and movies or making up ridiculous songs about the changing seasons. Some that we still sing today to our kids. We are grieving with you with glorious eternal hope, and we are forever thankful to have been loved by your family so well. Today, we are all Team Phenix.

    Jul 2014

Bridget Baker and the Cerny Family My best memory of Josh will always be this day at Rimrock Ranch in Central Oregon. Joy, Billy, Josh and Ellie stopped by my dad’s ranch during their road trip of the Northwest and we had such a great and memorable time. The kids raced around from Whychus Creek to the campsite and from the pond to the cabin, with Ochoco and Wrango hot on their heels. Josh did lose a shoe, it’s true, and we conducted a serious scavenger hunt for the missing shoe, with no luck. Josh had to continue on the road trip with only one shoe. But Josh appeared wholly unconcerned about the loss of his shoe and I remember that about him...his smile and the light in his eye....sort of saying “Hmm..this is an interesting development....one shoe!” Sweet and gentle, light hearted and up-for-action, engaged, funny and smiling....that’s how I remember beautiful Joshua Phenix. ❤️

    2015

Caroline Ashmead Thinking back to our year together in 2015-2016 certainly makes me smile! Josh was such a funny 5th grader! He was full of life, love, and silly faces. He was friends with everyone and loved to make everyone around him smile, including his teachers! Knowing and teaching Josh was an absolute pleasure and he will be dearly missed!

    Jul 2015

Jessica Westbrooks I will never forget Josh asking me to take him to Target so that he could pick out a new set of Legos to buy. He was so determined and saving his money to pick out exactly what he wanted. That summer was the summer I learned how cool Legos really were and I have spread the word to kids ever since! I have even told kids that I know a kid who won Lego competitions, aka Josh, which I have always thought was so impressive! His masterpieces like a giant Lego ferris wheel were always on display as you entered the Phenix home (in 2015 that is). It was always a treat to see what his next creation would be. Josh was always ready to help teach me new things for kids at the hospital, he was so thoughtful, fun, goofy, innovative, creative, genuine, and excited to share his joy with others. Josh introduced me to Lego Land at Lennox before we all went to see the movie Inside Out :) He was great at finding opportunities to search for the right mini figures to add to his collection and I loved that he wanted to see all the movies that Ellie and I wanted to see :) what a great brother, friend, son, cousin, nephew, grandson, classmate, and so much more. Josh you will live forever in our hearts and in our memories, we love you and miss you. Love, Jessica & Justin

nicole jones This is from when I stayed with Ellie + Josh while their parents were out of town. We walked to Starbucks and this was my attempt at being "the cool friend". IDK if Josh ever bought it though. He always made me laugh and this week with them has become one of my favorite memories. Forever missing him and grateful at least Joy and Billy thought I was cool enough to hang with their kids for the week.

Max Niederjohn Josh Phenix was a great friend. His funny jokes and lighthearted attitude made him very fun to be around. I remember one time at Six Flags I got the buffalo chicken strips and I thought they might be too spicy for me, but he supported me all the way through. I have some more very fond memories of him in Mr. Kamhouts class in 6th grade. He made any bad situation more fun and exciting. We will all miss you Josh.

Zack Goldstein I first met Josh was in 6th grade. The first day of school, I walked into Mr. Holmquist’s second period and sat down next to this tall kid. “He looks nice,” I remember thinking to myself. We started talking, and instantly became friends. That day, we found out that we had 3 more classes together. I was so happy that I had met a new friend this early into school. As middle school progressed, we grew closer and closer. From escape rooms, to group projects, to almost getting kicked out of White Water, every moment with him was a blast. I am so thankful that I have had Josh in my life these past 4 years. My dearest condolences go out to the Phenix family. Have fun up there ❤️

This is a poem that I wrote Josh around Christmas 2018: I would be remiss to miss, the nerdy posh of my wonderful cousin Josh Whose mind is awash and puts me at a loss of the see of legos and comics I come across With 2019 waiting at the door, I'll pray for a year better than before I hope through the angsty teenage season you can know God's Love...

There are so many more memories I shared with him, this was just a clear memory I had with him. My heart goes out to his family, and I hope everyone is doing okay.

Emily Crouch Sweet Josh and my son were instant friends when they met in First Grade - kindred spirits even though Josh always towered over Jac! Josh shared his love of his church with Jac, often inviting him to events and weekend retreats even though we weren't members. Eventually, because of Josh's sharing, we made it our church home and therefore impacting my family's life. Small Group with Josh was always a highlight of Jac's week because of the way Josh made it fun, always. We'd often have conversation about what Josh did this week that made him laugh. Even in a big group, Jac always wanted to play with Josh - he just made him feel happy. Jac always wanted to make sure Josh would be at events before committed to going (even as a high schooler). He had a heart to help other people too, I remember them working on a project in elementary school to raise money to build water wells for impoverished people in other countries. Our communities will not be the same without Josh in it and his loss is great. I will always remember Josh for the happiness he shared with other people (big and small), his willingness to be himself (no matter how silly) and his care for other people. I will miss the friendship that my son had with him, grieve the future moments they won't spend together and make sure Jac never forgets the qualities he showed him as a friend. We love you Josh!

Beth Warren Josh was a classmate of my son's at Sope Creek Elementary. Our family remembers Josh as a gregarious, kind-hearted, fun-loving kid who was a friend to everyone. One memory I have in particular is a "Clash of Clans" party we hosted for our son's birthday, when the boys were in 3rd or 4th grade. Josh came to the party and was such an enthusiastic participant in my (probably quite lame) efforts to create activities in keeping with the party's theme. The boys all had fun, in no small part thanks to Josh's playful spirit. We are so grateful to have known Josh, and our hearts ache for his family and friends. God bless you, Team Phenix. I loved Riding to church with Josh Every Sunday and participating in the small Group with him. He always managed to put a smile on everyone’s face and made the small group a lot more enjoyable especially when he went up on stage and did the crazy challenges and won awesome prizes. Also, I loved spending time with him during the church retreat weeke...

Josh was always fun to be around. I remember my first year of Transit when Josh would get up on stage and do crazy dares. Josh was always happy and made everybody smile. I’m so glad that I got to know him.

Amala Arun Josh and I had homeroom, ela, and science together in 8th grade and I remember him walking into the room and instantly lightening up the mood. He would always have a funny story to share or a joke that would always get people laughing. He was a cheerful, genuine, kind-hearted, and sweet spirit that brightened everyone’s day. I remember sitting at the same table as him in Ms. Attard’s class and always laughing about our inside jokes. My heart goes out to his family and close relatives; he will he missed dearly❤️❤️

Karen Henry I loved being the nanny to these two fun, smart and creative kids! Josh loved having fun, laughing and making us laugh! He also loved exploring (aka making me chase him through malls and parks). I will never forget his adorable laugh, our dance parties with Ellie, and playing with Jake together! Y'all have made a huge imprint on my heart! Love Love Love, Karen

My son, Caleb, is a year behind Josh. When Josh was baptized, Caleb looked at me and said, "Mom! I want what he has! Can I follow Jesus, too?" You will forever be a part of my sons forever story. Thank you for your testimony of faith. I know Caleb was one of many that you influenced with your faith journey.

William Weston I had the opportunity to be able to lead Josh in his time in Transit. From the first Sunday I met Josh, he was full of love and joy. I knew he was an amazing kid the moment I met him. I got to see Josh grow up into a young man who was a light to those around him. The small group all loved Josh and just being around him brightened everyone. Josh was a quiet leader, leading by his actions. He always set an example for those around him and his bright, loving personality always attracted his friends towards him. Josh was one of the most loving and generous guys I have ever met and will always be remembered in my heart.

Josh came to me for private cello lessons early in middle school and immediately I heard and saw his musical talent as well as his huge love for music and art!! He was always so genuine and I loved every minute with him. We shared many laughs too and while I loved talking with him about music, I also looked forward to his reviews of stage and scree...

I never met Josh in person, but I watched him grow up on Facebook - the thousands of memories he made with the friends and family that so loved him and even just through pictures and posts, his smiling face always brought one to yours. We hope our lives bring something eternal, as his, though so much shorter than ever imagined, most certainly did. ...

Susan Rogers Josh has been taller than me for some time (OK, years) but, I’ll always remember him as the little kid from "Mills Monkeys” second grade class who became fast friends with our son Jack. Since then, our whole family has come to know and love him. Here’s my short list of ways I’ll always remember and treasure that sweet boy. Member of “The Percy Jackson Club” eating lunch in the Sope Creek cafeteria Frequent victim of the “Fanta flu” (which Jack seemed to catch as well) Singer who replaced “cheer-lead-er” with “bu-rri-to” when belting out the tune in the back of my Jeep ("Oh, I think that I found myself a burrito”...) Creator, and hands-down dominator, of the Super Bowl commercial game shouting out the brand name before it’s revealed (“Tide!” “T-mobile!”) The one who called our Kate “Kathaniel” (Because Nate is short for Nathaniel, so of course…) Talented guy in the booth who figured out the lighting system for his high school production Insightful reviewer of character, plot and musical score for movies and Broadway shows -- always answering my questions about whether the latest one would be appropriate for Caroline Coolest kid with the new Mellow Mushroom gig that my boys envied, acting so professionally, but with that little smile at the corners of his mouth that he just couldn’t hide . . . Last but not least, I thank Josh for introducing us to his amazing family and friends who are stuck with us until we all meet up with him again. We love you! Team Rogers

Josh was in class a couple of years with my son Henry at Sope Creek. I spent a lot of time in their kindergarten class working with the reading group Josh and Henry were in together. Such a sweet boy. We are so very sorry and are praying for his friends and family.

It was truly my pleasure to be Josh and Ellie's last summer nanny. I remember I'd make Josh an over easy egg everyday for breakfast and a quesadilla every day for lunch (or so it seemed). Beans and cheese ONLY. I'd always suggest putting some veggies in there or on the side, but he stuck to what he liked. He was always thinking hard and using his c...

I remember this one time during Matilda's play rehearsal the ensemble was rehearsing a dance when all of a sudden the lights changed the beautiful pinks, purples, blues, etc that lit up the entire room. When the group stopped to look back we saw Josh smiling in awe of the lights he had just made happen. It was beautiful.

Billy, Joy, and Ellie- What a special celebration of Josh last night. I can't imagine the pain you are going through missing him. I was in Josh's homeroom and I loved it when he would make us laugh. I loved it when he dressed up during the week of Halloween. My personal favorite was the orange M&M. Rita Cavanagh My family has not been close to the Phenix’s for a long time. I have not been close with the Phenix’s for a long time. But Ellie used to be my best friend. My family used to struggle a lot when my dad was sick and so I would spend all the time at my neighbors house, the Phenix’s. And I just remember all the time how cranky Josh was in the mornings and how he was never upset when I was there... yet again. I would always go to church with them and he would just shrug it off like I was just a part of the family. He never failed to make me smile and he never failed to make me feel like a big sister to him. When I would have a sleep over he would always come downstairs and mess with me and Ellie and we would just react to him like sisters would. I am extremely apologetic for not being more inclusive to the Phenix’s after my family had left the neighborhood. I had gone through the same thoughts he had and I could have helped. However I know he is with God now and that he could not be happier than where he is. But I will always miss him and look back on the memories. I never really got to say it but thank you Josh for showing me what having a younger brother was like. Thank you for always coming downstairs looking for ice cream and other snacks even if we kicked you out but most importantly, thank you for taking the time to be in my life. Thank you Josh and I will always cherish the time we had together. I love you. I hope you are happy where you are now and I hope your pain has lifted. You deserve it. 🧡🧡🧡

To know Josh is to love Josh. I'm so grateful for my time with him at BCIO. Josh would tower over every student during worship and always want to be first picked for our games. I think my favorite memory of Josh was when he was probably about 14 or 15 mos old. Ellie was obsessed with Disney songs, and had been constantly singing “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty. We would twirl around the kitchen or living room, Josh on my hip because at 31lbs he refused to walk, singing and dancing like we did most days. But in hi...

As a Transit volunteer, I saw Josh every Sunday come up the escalator bringing friends to the middle school service. I think my favorite memories of Josh date back to the grocery store days when he and Ellie were in Weekday. Basically, Josh was Ellie's shadow and it sounds like he staye...
