Filipinas Santillan From the top of the Musziekinstrumentenmuseum, Brussels, remembering Caloy with this song, as we play it, we hope you will too: Old and Wise The Alan Parsons Project As far as my eyes can see There are Shadows approaching me And to those I left behind I wanted you to Know You've always shared my deepest thoughts You follow where I go And oh when I'm old and wise Bitter words mean little to me Autumn Winds will blow right through me And someday in the mist of time When they asked me if I knew you I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine And the sadness would be Lifted from my eyes Oh when I'm old and wise As far as my Eyes can see There are shadows surrounding me And to those I leave behind I want you all to know You've always Shared my darkest hours I'll miss you when I go And oh, when I'm old and wise Heavy words that tossed and blew me Like Autumn winds that will blow right through me And someday in the mist of time When they ask you if you knew me Remember that You were a friend of mine As the final curtain falls before my eyes Oh when I'm Old and wise As far as my eyes can see As far as my eyes can see There are Shadows approaching me And to those I left behind I wanted you to Know You've always shared my deepest thoughts You follow where I go And oh when I'm old and wise Bitter words mean little to me Autumn Winds will blow right through me And someday in the mist of time When they asked me if I knew you I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine And the sadness would be Lifted from my eyes Oh when I'm old and wise As far as my Eyes can see There are shadows surrounding me And to those I leave behind I want you all to know You've always Shared my darkest hours I'll miss you when I go And oh, when I'm old and wise Heavy words that tossed and blew me Like Autumn winds that will blow right through me And someday in the mist of time When they ask you if you knew me Remember that You were a friend of mine As the final curtain falls before my eyes Oh when I'm Old and wise As far as my eyes can see ...... We remember the time we spent with Caloy at their home, while we waited for Dodit and Mickey to come home. Caloy showed us his "baby" the sports car. We could see his very accommodating ways, and his devotion to Dodit when he showed a picture of the Ocampo beauties, and saying with pride that Dodit was the prettiest.

Deb Lara This my first time meeting the Ocampo Reyes family. We had the 2nd Behr Mueller reunion at our house in Las Vegas. It was then that I met Carlos. He wanted to know if there were any local jazz clubs here so I told him about Cabaret Jazz and that my husband and I went there occasionally. He was always hoping to get back here and go to that club. Alas it did not happen, but we have other jazz memories that I will share. Deb Lara, Gloria’s 2nd cousin

Paola Yawney I scoured my photos and to my great disappointment found only one with you in it. Then it dawned on me...your quiet and peaceful presence...your contentment to stay away from the spotlight...and let's face it, who would want to eclipse the beautiful brightness that Ninang Dodit is. And that's what made you the yin to her yang. While I did only find one picture of you, I found another pair that are very meaningful to me...ones that YOU took of me a long time ago. To be honest, at an awkward and insecure thirteen years old, I didn't photograph well, and that was painfully apparent to me when you gifted me the photos. But as I look at them now, I realize what you had done. You had captured ME. And that is what you did so well...what is embodied in the photos you took with your vintage Leicas, Hasselblads and Rolleis...in your quiet observant way...notwithstanding your deteriorating eyesight. YOU saw ME. Thank you for the lovely photos, Tito Caloy. I will treasure them always. Love, Paola

Raisa Abundo Last June, Tito Caloy and Tita Dodit were two of the principal sponsors at our wedding. I feel so blessed and grateful that over the last few months, Francisco and I had the opportunity to spend precious moments with them. I had never spoken much with ninong Caloy till this last year. It was really only in these lunches and meriendas with them during these months that I learned more about him and his many interests. How much excitement and passion can actually be hidden behind a silent facade! I also happily remember his 80th birthday party this January 2020. What a joyful occasion! Thank you for letting me be part of it and for the loving accompaniment you offered us in our first year of marriage. We will remember you always with love and gratitude.

Arianne Reyes Memories of Caloy P. Reyes By Ching Raimundo Caloy and I were casual friends. I get to see him about 3 to 4 times a year when we go home to Manila each January. I did get to spend a fair amount of time with him last year on our trip from Barcelona to Lisbon. There is something unique but special in casual friendships. Time spent with casual friends is in some way like child play. Seldom do encounters have any real purpose than to spend a little time in each other’s presence. But presence is precious, as we all know. Now, Caloy is no longer with us. I remember him as someone very playful and unassuming, always smiling and kind, someone who seems to savor every minute of life. He has a certain lightness of being that is so delightful. He was like the foam in my latte. Caloy was a prominent doctor, yet he seldom talked about medicine. What we talked about was cars and jazz. He loved cars. One time he told me all about how he rebuilt his Mini Cooper. He went into great detail about how he overhauled the engine: its specs, the measurements, the special jigs and tools, etc. This guy was a grease-monkey! Then, he went to the history of the Mini Cooper: who designed it, how many were built in certain years, the victorious races, and the race car drivers. He shared with me his escapades with his buddies in the car club that he belonged to. Then, he asked me how I managed to get away buying a red Porsche convertible. I told him the secret is not to tell your wife until you take delivery. When Evelyn saw the car in my garage, the first thing that came out of her mouth was “You and your walker won’t fit in that car”. He loved that story. Let me tell you about his love of jazz. Caloy had been listening to jazz almost his entire life and when he retired, he spent a good part of each day savoring that music. The unique thing with Caloy, is that he vividly recalled the history of a certain song - who wrote it, who sang it and where and when he first heard it. He was so generous in tutoring me because I am a newbie when it comes to jazz. He told me about his time as a young man when he listened to jazz at the Village Vanguard in New York. The Village Vanguard is a historical and iconic jazz club in Manhattan. He told me about Bill Evans, one of the most famous jazz pianist, a 5-time Grammy award winner. So when I found out that he and Dodit were coming to San Francisco in November last year, I told him that we have to go to Yoshi’s, our version of Village Vanguard in the West. I sent him the schedule, he picked the show and I got tickets. The girls came along. We had early dinner at the club so we could get in before the show and schmooze with the artist from New York. And for the next hour and a half, we listened to Arianne Neikrug and the Lawrence Hobgood Trio while splitting a bottle of cabernet. That night, Caloy told me of his grand plan to celebrate his 80 th birthday. He was going to re- create the Village Vanguard “feel” in a venue in Quezon City and commission a local jazz band – The Henry Katindig Trio for an evening of Straight Ahead Jazz. He asked me if I could come in January. I said I would. We arrived in Manila on January 29, 2020 a day before his celebration. And as we walked into Mateo’s, indeed my friend had it all set-up as he described it in November. He had his wish. That evening, he came to my table after dinner was served and as I shook his hand to greet him “happy birthday”, he handed me a set of CD’s – the original Bill Evan’s recording in the 60’s at the Village Vanguard. I refused the gift because I knew that he’s had these for years and there’s this thing among boys you don’t take another boy’s toys. But he insisted I take them. Little did I know that that would be his bequest. The last time I saw Caloy was on March 12. As we were leaving for the States on March 16, Dodit and Caloy had an intimate lunch party for us at the Manila Polo Club. They invited the three other couples who were with us in Barcelona. After lunch, on the way back to our condo, Dodit and Evelyn wanted to shop for shoes. So they dropped me and Caloy at the condo. We went up to our unit, sat down at my “man cave” where I have a TV and a small bar. There we sat for the next hour, nursed a bottle of Chenin Blanc and watched Bill Evans play on YouTube at the Village Vanguard. I feel lucky and privileged to have spent that hour with him. I still struggle to believe that Caloy is gone. What helps is for me to imagine two boys who spent a few days in summer just playing and hanging out, the simple pleasures of childhood. Then at the end of the season, one boy says to the other boy, “I gotta go home now”, and off he went. So, to Caloy – enjoy the summer days in your heavenly abode!!

Esther Javier Hi I am Esther, Dodit’s long time friend. My husband Edi & I first met Caloy at Dodit’s despedida de soltera. At dinner table together with Caloy & his good friend Toto Cruz, we found out that they were both Mini Cooper aficionados. All throughout the meal, they conversed animatedly about the Mini Cooper’s performance & also knew every part of the car’s engine. Dodit has always told me that the Mini Cooper is Caloy’s “baby”. It was fairly recent that Caloy had to sadly part with his “baby” because he had to give up driving. Caloy was a wide reader, aside from his vast Medical knowledge, he could talk about computers, music, photography & a lot more. Before the smartphones, Caloy was already into photography & took very interesting photos. He was developing his own films & printing his own photos. I remember he even took a Studio portrait of me & Edi. We admired the depth of his knowledge about music. He knew the composer plus the conductors who played the great compositions. Caloy & Dodit were our “favorite” Travel buddies. There were times, the four of us would take off to celebrate our birthdays abroad....Esther’s & Dodit’s birthdays were just one week apart. In one of our travels to Europe, after a whole day of visiting different grandiose churches & Cathedrals, he whispered to Edi “I think we have seen enough churches to last us a lifetime.” We were comfortable enough to share our feelings during our tours. One of the highlights of our trips was “meal time”..... Caloy found delight in eating, whether it be gourmet, Michelin rated, local cuisine, fast food or street food. I remember him enjoying sausage & fish cake in Korea & craving for Burger King in Spain & Portugal after days of feasting on good Spanish ham. Caloy was very adventurous & easy & fun to be with. Edi & I felt very much at ease with his quiet unassuming ways. What I (Esther) admired most about Caloy was his unique & unconditional & unselfish Love for Dodit!!! I remember many years ago receiving a very early morning call from Caloy. In a very calm but very concerned tone, he asked me to please pray for Dodit because she met a serious accident in the US. Caloy did not limit or restrict Dodit. During our Class get togethers & activities; whether in Manila or abroad, he would let Dodit mingle with the group And, he would wait quietly & patiently for Dodit. Whenever we travelled, he knew that Dodit & I would want to have time to explore on our own; he would willingly let us go & do as we pleased, provided we leave him in a bookstore or in a café while listening to his type of music & order for him a plate of sausages or a big bowl of ice cream. Caloy loved Dodit enough to let her pursue her passion, to let her develop her interests/hobbies, to nurture her friendship with others. He was just so happy & comfortable to let her grow & become the beautiful, admirable, well accomplished lady that Dodit is now. Dear Caloy, I cannot thank GOD enough for giving you to be Dodit’s love & lifetime partner.....you were Dodit’s one & only knight in shining armor. Together you both complemented each other & as your love for each other grew & flourished; it overflowed to everyone around you. It is a beautiful legacy both of you have given us. Edi & I thank GOD for giving us the privilege of knowing you & sharing countless memories & experiences with you & Dodit. I thank you Caloy because you were not selfish & allowed Dodit & me to be friends. Thank you Caloy.....for being Dodit’s one true love, for caring for her all these years Please continue to intercede for her as she now faces life in her own. My condolences to the family Caloy left behind.....Jodie & family; Carisa & family; Camille; Yani; my inaanak Noel We (Edi & I) love you all

This last year we have shared many of life’s ups and downs virtually. But most of all, we pray for each other wherever we are. I had the occasion to meet Caloy at lunch in a beautiful Vietnamese restaurant in White Plains. I met a towering figure, not only physically, but also in demeanor, conversation, and friendliness. It was a lovely time with friends. I feel privileged to have seen Dodit and Caloy together and the love they shared that is uniquely theirs.

Hi Doditte, I was really shocked to learn of Caloy’s passing. Our friendship goes back many years ago ; PGH training in our specialty; Mini Cooper restoration; listening to Bill Evans and other jazz musicians, etc. Unfortunately, having moved here in the USA more than 50 years ago reduced our bonding to occasional communications. He will be sadly...

Unfortunately, I do not have any photos to share of Tito Caloy. He and I only met about 3 years ago, when I started visiting the Philippines from the States more regularly. Every time I visited, I happened to hang out with Tito Caloy, and even got to workout with him several times at QC Sports, along with Tita Dodit, Noel and my Tita Ame, a long t...

TITA DODIT AND I, THOUGH SHE IS OFFICIALLY MY AUNT, USED TO BE PLAYMATES AND BUDDIES WHEN WE WERE YOUNG. I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THAT OUR RELATIONSHIP WAS MORE LIKE SIBLINGS, SO YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN TITO CALOY CAME AROUND, I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I WAS SUSPICIOUS ….MAYBE THE APPROPRIATE WORDS ARE POSSESSIVE AND JEALOUS. BUT AS I GOT TO KNOW H...

Mike Barrera THAT RELAXED, CONTENTED , HAPPY LOOK OF TITO CALOY P.REYES

I knew caloy from a distance but it was as if i knew him well. His assuring smile or just a simple hi or hello were enough to say how he cared for us, members of chs hi school class ‘64 led by dodit, a by no means easy task, putting several Temperaments together. We could feel his gentle & quiet support as he stood by the sidelines, watching our b...

When my husband, Mark and I returned to the Philippines for our STC golden reunion, we did not have an opportunity to meet Caloy. Caloy must have been a wonderful man because Dodit exudes a vibrant personality borne out of a blessed marriage and a happy family. Our condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Dodit and her family, with prayers for Caloy...

Thank you, Tito Caloy, for letting my nephew Lawrence, hear again. None of us knew that as a toddler he had plugged his ears with unpopped popcorn! Had you not removed them early enough, he might have just been written off as a slow learner. He is not pursuing his university degree abroad, thanks to you.

By: Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong Forty years ago, on October 22, 1980 Dr. Carlos Reyes made history in Philippine otolaryngology medicine by performing with Drs. Roel Romero and Leonardo Aranas the first translabyrinthine removal of an acoustic neuroma, a tumor in the skull base at the junction between the ear and the brain. This was barely seven years...

Carol and I were greatly touched when Caloy and Dodit made the trip to our little resort in Cavite to join our High School gathering. As usual, he kept the memory alive with his photographic genius. He kept our class whole and informed with his unmatched knowledge of the technical world which he generously shared. He will be greatly, greatly missed...

Arianne Reyes Remembering Caloy [Tribute given by Poch Robles after 9th day novena for Carlos P. "Caloy" Reyes via zoom participated by family and friends in the Philippines, United States and Europe.] "In the midst of our broken hearts, we are thankful we can condole with Dodit and her family and pray for Caloy in this 9th day novena via Zoom . Thanks to Yani for organizing this so well... Caloy must be looking on approvingly. I knew Caloy since he was "Boling" and I used to visit him in San Juan where the Reyeses would hold Sunday musical soirees . I don't remember clearly who played what instrument except for Tessie who would play the piano but the whole family participated. That was some 65 or so years ago. In the the mid to late 50s, we were at the Ateneo together although I was his senior. He was chief photographer of The Guidon when I was the editor. Then we went our separate ways in our careers but reconnected about 10 years ago. Caloy brightened the lives of all he met. Those who paid tribute in the past 8 days of this novena remembered his personal qualities so well... I will not repeat them. But I will tell you his negative traits. He never was annoyed, never uttered a bad word, never made an off-color joke, never made a disparaging remark, never bragged, never showed off. Never once in 65 years. What a perfect gentleman! Caloy and I had a relationship like brothers, which we did not have in real life. In the past 10 years, we were in frequent touch... sometimes daily. We shared many interests - history, especially military history - literature - travel... just last May, we enjoyed Barcelona's sights and tapas - jazz... although at different levels bec I could not tell what synchopation, improvisation, layering of different notes meant which he patiently explained to me. But we enjoyed listening. - sports cars... again at different levels because he knew every nut and bolt in his Mini Cooper and I merely liked my BMW. - he was my go-to-guy for resolving technical issues with my computer and cars - but our closest bond was photography. There are 4 types of photographers: 1. Recorders... of events, people and places. 2. Artists... who create beautiful images. 3. Tinkerers... who like toying with mechanical things. 4. Collectors... of cameras and accessories. (Caloy has a wide and valuable collection, including a 1932 Leica III.) Caloy was all 4 types. The compleat photographer. He would take the picture, develop the film, print and enlarge it. Yes, in this digital era, he still took photographs with film, a trend that is undergoing a revival among purists. Caloy was remarkable for his encyclopedic memory. He had a fantastic memory for details of cars, computers and cameras. He would remember the type of film, exposure, even the mixture of developers for photos taken long ago! But what truly impressed me most about Caloy was his multi-faceted range of talents: - knowledge of science - interest in mechanical things - love of music and the arts - appreciation of literature and history - compassion for his fellowmen - dedication to his profession in medicine, and - a curious and questioning mind. These made him special. A Renaissance Man in modern times. But maybe more important, I suspect that Caloy, although he may not have known or acknowledged it, saw God in everything, every day. This is the mark of Ignatian spirituality. What he was and what he did demonstrated this. He was a true son of Loyola. Like Ignatius, Caloy suffered a lot in the end. Like Ignatius, he too was alone. And like Ignatius, he is now by the side of God. Caloy, in case the heavenly computers break down and do not receive our messages to God, would you please fix them so that our petitions are heard in these times of crisis. Dodit, Jody, Carissa, Camille, Yani, Noel, and Tessie, like you, I will miss Caloy. Life will not be the same without him. He will always be remembered for - the smile on his face, and - the camera on his neck."

T Barrera Lopez There are many things we'll always remember about Tito Caloy... Three in particular which stand out: One, his friendly smile. Unforgettable in every way, right? Two, his camera. Always ready to snap memories for family get-togethers. And three, how welcoming both he & Tita Dodit would be to our family... From when we were children experiencing our own times of loss/grief, to when we were grown ups visiting Manila from Vancouver... always ready to share the joy & light of their home. And it's those memories that are so precious, and will always be treasured for a lifetime & beyond. The happiness & caring traits that Tito Caloy possessed will be dearly missed. Tita Dodit & their children (our cousins) have these warm qualities too... And it's such a beautiful thing to see Tito Caloys kind, generous and easy-going nature live on, through those closest to him. Sending loving condolences & prayers from a far.. -Tara in Canada ( w/ The Krastels & Lopezs)

I have always known Caloy to be a loving Husband to Dodit, a caring father to their 5 children, and a man of many hobbies he was passionate about. Little did i know that there were many sides to Caloy I was completely unaware of. A. Chester Ong A walk into the Garden of Paradise I struggled on how I can express myself here for Tito Caloy. Sadly I only met him over the last two years and I did not have as much memory of Tito Caloy to share. But despite of the short period of time that I got to know him. I have come to understand how he sees the world. Tito Caloy has a great love for photography and with me being a working photographer, I was able to connect with him intuitively. I will always remember his “man cave” with his cameras, books and photos and one of the most striking photo was a picture of two children that he displayed proudly in his room, which reminded me of W Eigene Smith’s iconic photo as seen above. With this photo I understood that tito Caloy’s hero of a photographer is the distinguished Life Magazine photographer. Smith was a perfectionist, he knew his craft well and he saw the image in his minds eye before he pressed the shutter and he would strive to perfect it as he sees it, this is followed by days in the dark room translating the image onto photo paper. The result is a masterpiece and an iconic image. There is no doubt that Tito Caloy is aware of the story behind this photograph. It also reflect his great love for his family and notably his children and his version of this photo remained his masterpiece. And this is how I will remember this warm and beautiful man

Arianne Reyes By Gene Abes Consultants and more senior co-resident physicians at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) would call him “Caloy.” Hardly would I hear anybody (including our ENT department secretary) address him as Dr. Reyes. This was not because he was not a respected faculty member. Rather, he was everybody’s friend and he probably preferred to be addressed by his nickname. Dr. Carlos P. Reyes was a tall, friendly guy, easily recognizable while walking through the short PGH corridor stretching from the old ENT Ward (Ward 3) to the old ENT operating room (OR) called Floor 15, later designated as the PGH Nursing Office. He would almost always be holding either an expensive photography camera, electronic gadget, ENT OR instrument, or car magazines – suggesting his varied interests aside from having good knowledge of Otolaryngology, particularly Otology. He would usually stop and chat with an acquaintance about his new medical or non-medical interests. I first met Dr. Caloy when I was the first year resident assigned to the Otology section. He would call me “Ging” while presenting the ear patients at the outpatient department (OPD) Ear Clinic, only to learn later that he would address all unfamiliar persons by that name. He was kind, helpful and very understanding. Equipped with ample information in Otology he gathered from postgraduate studies abroad, he would selflessly share these with the residents in order to sharpen our diagnostic acumen. He would instruct us to rely on concise yet complete clinical examination, involving audiologic evaluation tools and meager radiologic information in considering differential diagnoses. He was quite willing to assist us in our learning processes, particularly on how to distinguish middle ear from inner ear disorders, and cochlear versus retrocochlear diseases. Since we did not have any audiologist at that time, he admonished us to carry out the needed audiometric evaluations on our ear patients ourselves in order to learn both the techniques of the procedures and their limitations. Hence, after the OPD clinic we would not only perform routine pure tone and speech audiometric tests but also special examinations like the Bekesy test, short increment sensitivity index (SISI) test, alternate binaural loudness balance (ABLB) test and the test for tone decay. We would then discuss the test results during our next ear clinic and we would listen and be amazed at how Dr. Caloy would integrate the information and arrive at the complex diagnosis. Dr. Caloy was our mentor at the time when refinements in tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy aroused the excitement and imagination of budding otologists worldwide. Whereas canal down mastoidectomy was the usual norm to safely remove common mastoid pathology like cholesteatoma, Dr. Caloy introduced the concept of intact canal wall mastoidectomy that avoids or mitigates recurrent postoperative cleaning of the mastoid bone. The period was also the dawn of neuro-otology when Dr. William House popularized the transmastoid approach for acoustic neuroma and the endolymphatic mastoid shunt as treatment for Meniere’s disease. In order to teach us the anatomical and surgical principles of performing these procedures, Dr. Caloy set up the first temporal bone dissection laboratory in the country at the mezzanine above the ENT conference room. He would offer the course to all ENT residents-in-training and consultants nationwide. He practically revolutionized the method of otologic surgery by requiring ENT surgeons to practice doing ear surgery in the temporal bone dissection lab prior to performing ear surgeries in the operating room. In addition, he advocated the use of the operating microscope and dental drills in place of the old bone gouges, chisels and bone ronguers. His ideas were later adopted by other ENT training institutions as we see today. The requirement that every ENT resident must undergo temporal bone dissection in the course of his training obviously stemmed from the efforts of Dr. Caloy. Many senior ENT consultants who are still with us today were former students of Dr. Caloy in his temporal bone lab Unfortunately, before finishing my residency training, Dr Caloy expeditiously left the PGH ENT department for unknown reasons. He then set up his private clinic in Quezon City and later joined the ENT department of University of Santo Tomas. Reflecting on the significant yet probably unknown achievements of Dr. Caloy toward the advancement of otology and neuro-otology in our country, I realize how blessed I was to be one of his students during that brief period when he was still with us at UP-PGH. With our profound gratitude Sir, we will always remember you.

Arianne Reyes [from Didit Sy-quia] Sunday lunch in my sister, Mia Faustmann's home, on October 8, 2017. The food served that day was Sauerkraut, sausages, potato Roesti (in other words German food). I had cooked a lot of Sauerkraut on purpose so as to be able to give Caloy some in a jar to take home. According to Dodit, Caloy liked it so much, he asked that it be warmed up and served everyday thereafter until he had eaten it all up. The above notes are a bit long winded. Perhaps it would suffice that Caloy will be remembered as a man of sharp wit, dry humour and very knowledgeable in many matters.
