Eulogy by elder son Derrin Here’s to you Dad Dad had a sharp and active mind, as he used to say sometimes “a mind full of useless information”. I would put this down to two things, one a genuine curiosity, particularly for history, and all things maritime and mechanical. Two, dad was passionate, particularly where it came to his photography,...
My Best friend John - By Susan Hadfield My Best friend John was always there for me. He was ROMANTIC. Only two weeks prior to his sailing for England he said “Will you follow me and we will marry as soon as you arrive? I will sell my car to give us more cash.” An unusual proposal indeed which I couldn’t refuse could I? During the week I was in...
Eulogy by youngest son Ian The time has come now, the day, for months now I have dread, To say goodbye to you my dad and share what must be said. How do I tell all these good folk, of what you mean to me, And all the things that you did love, and passed down on to me. For we are all here to celebrate, a life that’s so well lived, And we all sh...

Mrs Susan Hadfield In memory of JOHN...Barry & Paulette Gittins: If my ageing memory serves me right, I first met John in the early 2000ʼs on a mini bus hired by our mutual friend David Williams. The task that day was to ferry some overseas photographer friends to the Yarra Valley for an outing. We connected due to Johnʼs engaging, friendly nature and chatted about all things photography. During this period, I used to scan negatives on a regular basis at David Williamsʼs studio and John, who was both a retiree and a photography enthusiast, would often visit… So eventually what do 3 blokes do when itʼs lunchtime? Go to Yum Cha of course! And so, naturally, this became a ritual and we began to invite other photographers to join us. Some of them also became regulars. We named these regulars “The Munchkateers”, a group which included myself, John, David Williams, Rob Anderson, Darren Henderson, Vlad Petrovic and Meng Chor. Sadly our last lunch meet was over 6 months ago, but I know John would love to know that we will continue this little ritual and keep alive the memory of our mutual enjoyment. On a personal level, Iʼve enjoyed many an outing with not only John and I, but also together with our wives, Susan and Paulette. Both John and Susan were wonderful hosts and friends and we enjoyed many wonderful times at their home and at a selection of galleries and cafes…Sadly we have not seen them as much as we would have liked for the last couple of years, due to work commitments…. This new world order of working Baby Boomers has its pitfalls. John as many know, was passionate about all things photographic and has produced some many fine images, one of which I proudly own. He was also fascinated by photographic equipment and how it worked. Sometimes when I wanted to try a new gizmo for my job as a professional photographer, he would very obligingly act as a model to see how it functioned. John was a warm – hearted, generous man who enjoyed being with, and was interested in, people. He was also a true gentleman and a man of substance and integrity. It was always an inspiration and privilege to be in his company. We visited photography galleries, went to photography functions and workshops and had lunch mainly where the Asian Spring Rolls were good. John became quite a connoisseur of these delicacies. Late last year, I received the crushing news of Johnʼs illness. Throughout his treatments he always had this positive belief that he would fight the condition and buy some quality time. Alas, it was not so and here we all are. Farewell my good and noble friend, you will always be remembered and missed. Love, Barry & Paulette Gittins.
