Occidental did a good job pairing JoAnn and me to be freshman roommates. We were a good fit, enjoying each other’s company as we adjusted to this new way of life, sharing our various experiences. We laughed a lot, squealed a little, shed a few tears. JoAnn had arrived on campus with strict instructions for breaking in her new contact lenses a few...

I was a student of Ms. Stabb in the 1970s at UC Davis. She was so inspiring, always pushing us to step out of our comfort zone. I adored her !

I always enjoyed visiting with JoAnn when she came to Los Angeles for the CSA Western Region meetings in the late 1970s. Then in 1984 (or so) CSA met in NYC, and a group of us stayed at the FIT dorms. That's when we became better acquainted, enduring the dark dorm rooms, and the coed (!) bathrooms. Each year after that I looked forward to shari...

I was a Student of Joann's at Davis in both Costume History and Personal Adornment. I never missed a class, took copious notes (with sketches) and lived for her comments on my work. Funny (dry) knowledgeable and so gracious.
Mary Yaeger JoAnn was my Design Earth Mother for the five years I was a student at UCD (BS 1994, MFA 1996). This unfinished embroidery and textile mono print conveys some of my feeling about JoAnn's influence on me as an artist. I began "We Thrive From Her Embrace" during a 1998 summer workshop at Penland School of the Arts with Renie Breskin Adams. I regret that I never completed or shared this piece with JoAnn, but my gratitude remains undiminished.

Mary Schoeser From September 1969 when I got to UC Davis, until just two days before we lost her, Jo Ann was the best 'coach' one could ask for, always expecting the best but equally supportive, welcoming and generous with her knowledge and connections (and with her sofa, an essential destination after flying in from London!) She introduced me to so many people who made several books and exhibitions possible, including this 2013 show at UCD, pictured, which celebrated the important contribution made to Textiles: The Art of Mankind - both by Jo Ann and, through her, Adele Zhang. That the Davis Design Department's collection is now called The Jo Ann C. Stabb Design Collection is a perfect acknowledgment of how influential she was - a collector of textiles but also people and ideas. In our last conversation she shared her observations about Kaffe Fassett and these will contribute to an upcoming chapter for a book on him, and I know that her spirit will continue to inspire me for years to come.

Ellen Hauptli JoAnn believed in me from my first class with her at UCDavis. Her guidance was gentle and pointed at the same time. In one class I sat embroidering an elephant for an Indian inspired garment. Passing my work station she said, "Careful about the Dumbo look..." In this picture, she put herself in my scissored hands at a live performance (with Chere Mah) as I transformed her jacket. Always a champion of my work, I felt honored that she wore the clothes I made. And every year the week after Thanksgiving I received my first and best Holiday card - a gorgeous creation from Jo Ann

Nan Turner JoAnn and I were roommates at the Costume Society Annual Conference in Seattle in 2019. We had so much in common. Not only had she been my professor when I was an undergraduate in the Design Department at UCD, but she also became my friend and adventure companion when I returned to Davis. We had fun staying up late when we were roommates, watching the political talk shows and talking about life. We had planned to attend the conference in New York City in 2020 together but unfortunately it was cancelled. I think it would have been a blast going with her. I also always appreciated how JoAnn championed me in all my endeavors. She was a great cheerleader and an inspiration. I will miss her.

Adele Zhang Without Jo Ann's connection and help, I wouldn't be able to curate this exhibition "Appreciation and Adaptation, Homage to Global Textiles" to showcase the wonderful Paul Smith Global Textile Collection at UCD Design Museum. Also without Jo Ann’s belief in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career path. She taught me to be a thoughtful teacher and a caring individual. With all of my fond memories of her, I will forever honor her contribution and spirit in the UCD Jo Ann C. Stabb Design Collection as well as a role model in my life.

I was just a baby fashion historian when I met JoAnn. It had to be around 2004 when I met her at my very first CSA National Sympsoium. She was so kind. She had been assigned as my mentor for a first time attendees mixer/dinner. I was in awe of everything, including her. I served on the Western Region board with JoAnn for probably 10 years, attendi...

JoAnn was one of the best of all. Always upbeat, enthusiastic and kind. She was a valued colleague at the Costume Society of America and I looked forward to every event just to see her again and catch up. She will be missed.

JoAnn and I took a blood oath, under a large oak tree in the second grade, to always be friends, and we kept our word. When I was a teenager, in the Dark Ages, my mother said she could always tell when I was speaking with JoAnn on the phone, because I was laughing so much. She designed my wedding gown, and we were in each others weddings. For y...
I met JoAnn in 1st or 2nd grade. She went by Alice for a while before she became JoAnn. I thought she was beautiful and was so happy to be her friend. She always commented to me how patient my sister Kay was when we were learning how to dive. We were friends throughout school. When we were teenagers, she started calling me “Thatch.” We did Girl...
JoAnn was such a special lady. We had been friends since the 5th grade….and that was a long time ago. Her family lived near the Palo Alto Military Academy and used to laughingly say my husband, David would wake her up every morning as he was a bugler at the Academy and played revelry each morning! Last saw her at our Paly High School Reunion two...
I met Joanne in the early 1980s as a young transfer student to UC Davis. She was one of few who recognized my potential and was always kind and encouraging. Taking her courses were always inspiring! Joanne deeply affected me in ways that are too numerable to count. I consider her a key mentor that contributed to achieving my Ph.D. goal. She was...
Josephine Moreno In the recently renovated Walker Hall, I have mounted a special garment that is a homage to JoAnn who encouraged and inspired me as a young transfer student to UC Davis. JoAnn was one of very few that truly believed in my ability to excel. I am so appreciative of her support and creative spirit that lives on among the many that she has inspired.
Lydia Tanji JoAnn was the most influential and supportive professor/mentor during my undergraduate and graduate studies, and continued many years since. Her wit and humor and passion for the arts and education will be sorely missed. I can't thank you enough JoAnn!
She was a good friend. We worked together many times during the years. Our last project together was when I asked her to judge an internationally judged Wearable Art Exhibition at the Art Center in Palos Verdes, California. She was hard at work on identifying the "piles" of her collections that she was giving to Davis but agreed to do so. She ...
JoAnn will always be in my mind the very BEST. She always lifted peoples spirits with her humor, kindness, enthusiasm, and general positive outlook. Everyone loved JoAnn for her talent, leadership, excellence in teaching and for being an all-around wonderful person. There will never be anyone as dedicated as JoAnn was to the Design Department. I met JoAnn in a round-about way in 2006 at the Redmond Ranch in central Oregon. Our mutual cousins had come from Norway to visit with their US cousins. After their stop in Ashland, Oregon, to visit with me and my family, I drove them to the Redmond Ranch outside Bend, Oregon, to visit with JoAnn. It's a rare treat to discover a new cousin and I...
I wish I had been able to stand up and say something at JoAnn’s celebration yesterday. The lump in my throat was just too great. Luckily, as I listened to everyone’s wonderful tributes, I realized much of what I wanted to say was already known by all. JoAnn, "Momma Jo," "Nana No," "Jo." Whatever way you knew her, you KNEW her “Jo-isms.” So many s...
