    Family and friends

Jeannetta Thiriot Peterson was born in 1939 to Joseph E. and Ellen M. Thiriot and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada where she graduated from Las Vegas High School with the class of 1957. She graduated from Brigham Young University where she met her husband Jan Farley Peterson (deceased 2006) of Orem, Utah, and they had five wonderful children. After Jan graduated from the University of Utah, the famil... more

Andy P From Alice Thiriot Waite (sister): My wonderful sister, Jeannetta Thiriot Peterson, passed away yesterday. She fought valiantly to conquer the Corona Virus, but was not able to recover. We were best friends for 81 1/2 years - I will miss her terribly, as will many other family members and friends. This cute picture was when she was about 12 years old. Jeannetta was beautiful inside and out and a wonderful example to me.

    1954

Andy P From Janet (Howard) and Roger Smedley: Front Row (Left to right): Jayne Howard Farr, Janet Howard Smedley, John Miller Howard Back Row: Jeannetta Thiriot Peterson, Vonnie Gill Carter, Alice Ann Thiriot Waite Picture circa 1954 About a month before Jeannetta went in the hospital, we were talking on the telephone together reminiscing about the past. She remembered during World War II that each American was given ration coupons for things such as meat, tires, gas, food, cheese and other items. The Thiriots were diligent in saving up their coupons for gas by walking to school, work, church, friends’ homes, and everywhere they went to save up enough gas coupons to go to Salt Lake which they all looked forward to. They drove from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City for General Conference twice a year and stayed with us! They would get in the car and say, “Is it worth it?” And their Dad would say, “It’s worth it because we are going to see family!” Aunt Ellen and Uncle Joe took Jayne (5) and me (3) home to Las Vegas to live with them when our mother, Agnes, went to work while our father was ill. Jeannetta was at BYU in Provo and would often take the bus to Salt Lake on weekends to spend it with my mother and brothers, Paul and John. Jeannetta would say, ”We were just ‘trading beds’ for a while.” We lived in Las Vegas from September to December for two years, 1957 and 1958. The Thiriot’s home was our home and our home was her home. We both shared our families. After Jeannetta and Jan were married, they moved to the Avenues by our house with their baby, Todd. Jayne and I were probably 10 and 8 and would often babysit and sometimes even sleep over. Jeannetta said she wanted to live close to family. We were her family! After we were married, Roger and I had a military obligation in Augusta, Georgia. Afterward, we saw Church and other historical sites on the East coast. However, we knew we must go see Jeannetta because she lived in the East somewhere. She really did...Buffalo, New York! So we took extra days and made plans to go and see Jeannetta because she was family! I don’t remember whose beds we slept in, but she made us feel welcome, and “Of course, we could stay there,” and “It was no problem at all”, because we were family! When Jeannetta moved back to Utah, it just seemed right that she was closer to home, at least for all of us! We are so thankful for Jeannetta and appreciate her lifetime of service. We will miss her laugh, her boxes of books, her advice, her knowledge, and everything that made her so special and unique. We are thankful how she brought people together and made us family! We will truly miss her, but we know it is only temporary.

Andy P From Travis: To be honest, even if she weren't my mom, I would have fought to have been her friend. When we were babies and I said I do not like you, she always said I am sorry you feel that way because I always love you. She was always unconditionally loving all of her 81 years. I am so happy she is flying with angels on a new pair of youthful legs and will miss the convenience of chatting with her here. I hope I can live up to her example for the rest of my cranky years. I am in awe to have had the blessing of having such an incredible mother.

Andy P From Tod: Some women are described as "high-maintenance" - my mom was the exact opposite. It was so easy to make her happy. Whatever I got / made her for Christmas, she was overjoyed and made me feel like I had just liberated Europe. It never changed when I grew up. I helped her make sauerkraut, did little repairs on her barn - this year we planted a few plants in pots. She still made me feel like a hero. Mom let me help her can when my little hands would fit in the canning jars. I helped her make chocolate when we did that for Church fundraising and later as a business. She was super smart and helped me develop a love of books and knowledge. She was an example of loving your enemies - and loving everyone. She helped me grow my first pumpkin when I was in kindergarten. This year I will have my largest pumpkin / squash harvest ever and I hope she comes down to see it from the other side - I know she'd still be proud of me.

From Bruce Strassburg: I was, as a teenager, their home teacher with Br. Bob Richardson when your family lived on Willow Avenue in Niagara Falls, Your dad was working for Pittsburgh Metallurgical on Witmer Road between Highland and Hyde Park Boulevard. I remember them telling me that they were wondering what they were getting into moving to Niaga...

From Gay Nell Poulton: I have so many memories of Jeannetta and every day when I open my jewelry box there are two pieces of jewelry that remind me of her. Her father, Joseph Thiroit, gave them to me as a thank you for being such a good friend. In reality I owed her much more for being my good friend over the 48 years of our friendship. The f...

Andy P From Shawna Kay: Tod, Travis, Andrea and Christian and Emily - I first met you in Lockport on Lincoln Road in 1974. I was teaching in Syracuse then. Your mother was in need of my help to pattern Christian to lay down the neurological network he would have acquired had he been able to crawl and walk in due course. I was amazed at this brilliant woman who went all the way to Philly to get cutting edge training from Domen and Delacotto to help Christian walk without tripping and falling due to Medulla Oblongata problems. She became one of my best friends and mentors. When I became engaged a year later Jeannetta gave me a wedding shower. She took me to the BPO before I even met my Philharmonic musician husband. Jeannetta took the time with each one of us to make sure we were loved and valued all the time giving so much loving attention to her 5 little children. Shelly and I often went to stay with Jeannetta in her home in Utah. She always insisted on putting us up and giving us her car so we didn't have to rent one. WHO DOES THAT? I will so miss being able to giggle over the phone or often be engaged in a an exhilarating conversion about the latest book she took time to read. Jeannetta certainly came here to love us and show us how it's done. I along with all of you will feel a deep void until we meet Jeannetta again.

From Sally Gardner: I'm so grateful I got to see her last summer. My memory of her in that last visit was that she radiated love. Here's a little memory of her from Lockport, when I was maybe 10 years old. She and I walked out of the Peterson house on Kingston Circle and approached her new car in the driveway. She turned to me and said, "When is...

Joan Adams (friend from Montana): When the Petersons moved to Frenchtown, Austin and I thought,"They are about our age, we should get to know them." From Debbie Magdaluyo: There is nobody that touched my heart as she did! We worked together every single day for many years. We were friends at school which continued into our personal lives. From Mara Lyn Shane (friend from Las Vegas): I met Jeannetta, in my son Samuel’s second grade classroom. She must have sensed how much I needed to be involved with more than my own little family, as she soon asked me if I wanted to assist in her classroom. We developed a relationship over time and soon she began to mentor me as she has for so man...

From Deborah Hodler: We worked together at Crestwood ES many years ago, and you probably remember me as the previous owner of the Suzuki Samarai jeep. From Ivey Graham Peterson, daughter-in-law: My mother-in-law, Jeanetta Thiriot Peterson passed away Friday. I loved her and already miss her so terribly. She taught me so much. Andy P From kandice lytle: I met Jeannetta in 1995 at Crestwood. She was the most incredible librarian and a super star in my eyes! I was a first year teacher and welcomed me with open arms. The library fast became my favorite place to go and get help. She always knew exactly what book I needed for the lesson I was teaching and she knew just where it was in that library. I am writing this through tears because she loved life and gave everyone around her so much of her love. Jeannetta inspired me to become a librarian and when I finally left Crestwood that is where I went. I have been in the library ever since. I have never been able to do what she did, that comes from a lifelong love of reading and I came to the party late. Your mom, forever changed my life. I am just so sad I couldn't find a picture with me with your mom but the picture I found is beautiful because it has very special people in it with her.

From Lindsey Murphy Knapp: One thing I always remember was your mom bringing the snow one maker to to the 4th of July BBQ every year. I don’t remember if you guys actually brought the machine or not but she would always make me one. I loved sitting there at the kitchen counter and I’d watch her make mine and then she’d so kindly ask me what flavor...

From Hanna Rushton: Aunt Jeannetta was one of a kind and I will miss her so much. I just wanted to say how much I loved her. Sarah and I loved living with her for those couple of months after college and we were so grateful to her for letting us live with her. It sounds like she’s done that for a lot of people, which sounds about right. She was...

From Jana Horne Anson: I loved every minute I got to spend with her. She had such a quiet way, but it was so moving. I was lucky to be “assigned” to be her visiting teacher when she first moved to Alpine. She would insist I visit her first so I could leave my littles with her and visit the rest of my ladies. I was supposed to be her “helper in...

Andy P From Sarah Ostergar: I have so many fun memories of living with Aunt Jeannetta during the summer of 2015. She was a very special lady and it was so fun to spend time with her for those few months. I wish I could go back and spend more time chatting with her – she was so sweet and fun to talk to – I always left our conversations with my spirits lifted. One of my favorite memories was when she showed me her Talenti Gelato stash in her garage freezer. I had commented how I loved that brand too when I saw one in her freezer in the house and she told me I had to come with her in the garage. She was so cute! She of course graciously offered me to have any of her stash. I hope to always keep a full freezer of Talenti Gelato like Jeannetta :) When I was getting ready to mail my wedding invitations, Jeannetta helped me set up a space so I could work on stuffing the envelopes and addressing them. I usually worked on this late at night, and one evening around 10 or 11pm Jeannetta sat down next to me and started addressing envelopes for me. She was so sweet, always willing to serve. And her penmanship was beautiful. I’ll always think of her infectious laugh, her kindness and generosity towards others, and her selflessness.

From Eileen Lynsky: I will always remember the darling way Jeannetta taught the Relief Society sisters in the 45th Ward. She had a deep testimony of our Savior and she bore witness of Him as she taught. She had a way of teaching with “common sense" and no fluff. She wanted us to understand the doctrine and how she applied it in her life as a moth...
