Jean Stapleton

Jean Stapleton was an American actress who departed this life at the age of 90 due to natural causes and surrounded by her family and friends. She was best known for having portrayed Edith Bunker, the wife of Archie Bunker, on the 1970s comedy "All in the Family" but her acting career spanned over seven decades. Born 1923 in New York City, New York, she made her acting debut in the off-Broadway play, “American Gothic” in 1941. A year later, she started studying drama at Manhattan's Hunter College from 1942 to 1945. In 1951 Stapleton debuted her long television career in the television series “Starlight Theater.” She appeared on the silver screen in the movie “Damn Yankees” in 1958. In 1968 she took the role that would change her life and make her a household name, the role of Edith Bunker in “All In the Family” which she would play for eleven years. Later in Stapleton's life, in 1996 she played opposite John Travolta in the movie “Michael.” In 2002 she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fa
