david udberg I first met Gordon way back in 1976 when I joined Berghaus. From that first meeting, it was obvious that Gordon was a dynamic and enthusiastic man. However, as we went through the years, I got to know him better and my admiration for him grew. He was without doubt one of the most innovative and creative people I ever met. He had a restless enthusiasm, enquiring mind and interest in new ways of working and new ideas. Without him and Peter Berghaus would never have existed. Aside from business, I had many great days out in the hills with Gordon, testing of new product ideas and concepts that he had invented. Also, it is no exaggeration to say that I would never have learned to ski without the encouragement of Gordon, including skiing in Val D’Isere, the Back Bowls of Vail and ‘The Haute Route’ that we did together with Peter and Susie back in 1992. Not only was it a pleasure to work and spend leisure time with Gordon but he always had a different view to bring to many topics and many of his ideas and thoughts have lived with me and helped shape my life. He was and remains a true inspiration for me. There is a saying I heard some time ago that “Someone never really dies until the last person who knew them dies”. This is surely the case with Gordon. He will live on in the memories of so many people whose lives he so positively touched. Gordon once said to me that “extraordinary people do extraordinary things”, well in this case that applies the other way because all he did truly defines him as an extraordinary man. David Udberg
