This memorial was created to celebrate the life of Geoff "Joffa" Ainsworth Geoff attended GGS where he was Dux and was captain of the 1st 18 football team. He then matriculated to the University of Melbourne in 1965, where he was resident at Trinity College. He represented the college in tennis, athletics, cricket and football, and also played football with the University Blues where he won the best and fairest in 1966. Geoff played in jersey no. 25 with the Geelong Cats, who used him as a defender in the back pocket over the course of his eight-season career. Rugged, strongly built and hard at the ball, he also showed great judgement as well as an awareness of when to drop back and cover for team mates. He was a member of Geelong's losing 1967 VFL Grand Final side in his first year at the club. Geoff Ainsworth went on to become club captain in 1973 He retired aged only 28, in order to concentrate on his legal career. During his career Geoff played 135 VFL games, kicked three goals and polled 5 Brownlow medal votes for the Cats between 1967 and 1973. In 1976 he was made a life member of the Geelong Football Club. Geoff was a loyal friend to many, always willing to help and offer valuable advice. He was highly intelligent, fair and had a great sense of humour. He dedicated his working career to providing his family with a world class education, a cherished family home and unforgettable holidays. He was a generous and loving family man and will always be missed.
