    Elaine Stritch

    Elaine Stritch was an American actress and singer who departed this life in her sleep at the age of 89. Stritch is best known for her work on Broadway. In 1995, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. Born 1925 in Detroit, Michian, she studied at the Dramatic Workshop of The New School in New York City under Erwin Piscator. Stritch made her Broadway debut in the comedy “Loco” in 1946. She followed this up with her Tony-award nominated role in the original production of William Inge's play "Bus Stop.” Later, in 1973, she relocated to London, starring in several West End productions, including Tennessee Williams' "Small Craft Warnings." Stritch turned to television and in 1975 she starred in the ITV production comedy “Two's Company.” Later in life, she returned to the U.S. and appeared in a Law and Order episode in 1993, garnering her an Emmy win.
