Doreen was born on 22nd November 1931 in Victoria Park, Perth, to Iris (nee Douglas) and Sidney Smith. She has one sister, Valma. Doreen was baptised, along with her mum and sister, in 1949 at Albany Baptist Church. She married Raymond Stanley Shaw on 20th April 1957 at Albany Baptist Church. Together they had three sons, Ivan, Bevan and Peter. Then, with three daughters-in-law, Sue, Marcie and Paulette, came 8 grandchildren, Karli, Jason, Rebecca, Lauren, Liam, Theo, Jacob, Kane. Rebecca (and Kyle) gave Doreen one great-grandchild, Nyssa (2014). In her early years Doreen lived at Kalgan River (in a tent), then Albany during her school years. As a primary school teacher Doreen lived in Brookton, Bruce Rock and Claremont before marrying and moving to the family home in Bentley, Perth. Doreen lived in Bentley with Ray and the family from 1957 until 2000, before retiring to Goode Beach, Albany. Her beloved Raymond passed away suddenly in July 2003. Doreen was very keenly involved in christian ministries and activities for her whole life. She played music in the church (Albany and Bentley) for 70 years, starting when she was 12 years old. She was also very involved in women’s work, pastoral care and craft group activities. Doreen was well known as a pianist with the BYF during the 1960's and 1970s. Her playing was widely appreciated by many. Her style could be likened to running fingers across silk - so smooth and touching. She played for numerous weddings of friends and family, and brought musical joy to people wherever she played. Doreen was also the winner of the WA Yamaha organ contest 1969, representing her state in the national contest in Melbourne. As well as having a love for the piano and music, Doreen's interests included reading and camping. She passed away peacefully on 25th May 2016, aged 84, after struggling with cancer from mid-2015. During this final struggle, she maintained her strong faith in God, and continued to express gracious thanks to all who helped her through the treatments. In her own words (1996)... "Thanks. Mine has been a musical journey of faith hope and love, blessed by the encouragement of family and friends. Thank you for helping me say with music - "Jesus Christ is Lord"" --- Doreen Shaw
