    Dixie Virginia Carter

    Dixie Virginia Carter was an American film, television, and stage actress who passed away at the age of 70 due to endometrial cancer. She is best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker in the CBS sitcom "Designing Women." Born 1939 in McLemoresville, Tennessee, she spent many of her early years in Memphis and attended the University there. In 1959, Carter competed in the "Miss Tennessee" and "Miss Volunteer" beauty pageant at the University of Tennessee and won first runner-up. Four years later in 1963 she starred in the TV series "The Doctors." In 1974, she played the role of Assistant D.A. Olivia Brandeis "Brandy" Henderson in the soap opera "The Edge of Night." In 1982, Carter appeared as the stuck-up and conniving Carlotta Beck on "Filthy Rich." But in 1986, Carter made her mark on history and played the role of Julia Sugarbaker in the 1986–1993 television program "Designing Women."
