I shall miss Craig. I remember when he came to work at Reed. He was a friend, and one of a dozen or so people around campus who made my life go better. I didn't have complex print jobs, though he did do me some print favors along the way. I mainly hung around his shop before, between, and after classes. For the last few years, we've discussed the...
Craig cared deeply about Reed, the students, and making things work. Late requests were greeted with a warning that the deadline might not be met (yet it always was), requests to duplicate documents that were not quite ready for public consumption were greeted with "how about if I do this?" (which of course was a massive improvement), and counting ...
I graduated in 1994 but then worked at Reed until 1997 while my husband was completing his thesis, which Craig printed and bound. I came back to Reed as an employee in 2011, and Craig printed hundreds of posters and programs for events I've managed since that time. I always enjoyed when Craig would walk the sets of posters over to my office himself...
Craig is hired as a printer at Reed College.
My favorite times with Craig were riding together in the elevator up to the 3rd or 4th floor from the basement of Elliot. In passing on the halls, we both grumbled about life, time and weather, but in the elevator we talked frankly about caring for our parents, life in Portland and more recently h ow retirement could not come soon enough. We did th...
My memories of Craig are multiple, from the earliest of years, when I needed copies for classes in 1997 till a week before his passing, when we both entered Eliot Hall on a cold December morning in 2020. Through those years, there were the numerous color prints that only Craig could produce, especially the superb ones on heavy paper. There were t...
Craig over the decades helped so me and my students with duplicating projects (and so many other people), often at the last minute or on a very tight turn around. He was initially a quieter presence until coming out of his shell with the retirement of his predecessor. He often share his health struggles: I really worried about him this year, as the...
Craig took great pride in his work, and often had a half-hidden chuckle in the growl with which he usually greeted me and other folk who too often had waited until the last minute to copy something. He unfailingly delivered copies either before or at the time he promised them. When it became possible to email materials for copying, I was often asto...
The year I started in the business office our student worker was graduating so needed to visit Craig for thesis printing. He had asked Craig to print his thesis on pink paper and when the time came to pick it up he was afraid to go get it by himself. My coworker accompanied our student to the printshop and they came back delighted with a beautiful ...
I met Craig in 2001 when I started work in Res Life & Disability Support Services (one office at the time). Little did I know that Craig and I would see each other weekly, if not daily, some times of the year. This was back when the housing lottery was done ON PAPER and then manually entered, student by student, into banner. Basically everything ...
Oh, sad to hear this news. Favorite curmudgeon of all time! Always a "Well, work day ends in half an hour--that's the good news!" and some mysterious muttering as I handed him some last minute, impossible and probably personal work to do. What was he saying? Did anyone dress more brightly? So capable, too, and always got it done, often stealth...
I arrived at Reed in the fall of 2002, and Craig and I became friends soon thereafter. Every time I went into Eliot Hall, I would make sure to stop in to the print shop, where Craig would tease me, and I would tease him straight back. He always acted like he was a tough guy, but he was -- not so secretly -- an incredibly generous and sweet man. He ...
Craig was an awesome person, I am super bummed to hear of his passing. I first met him in 2002 and new that he was a passionate and fun person. His personality was a hallmark of Reed and he will be missed greatly. There are some key people that silently operate the machine of Reed and he was one of them. He was passionate about his job, his love of...
When I arrived at Reed in 2005, two peripheral things defined the print shop's vibe: cute baby pictures of the kids of people who worked at Reed, and the classic Office Space picture of three guys in a field beating up a misbehaving fax machine. I'm guessing that picture was Craig's. He had a reputation for Hawaiian shirts, sardonic one-liners, la...
It probably only took me 5 years of working with him and connecting over sports, mostly golf, to achieve what I felt was insider status with Craig. That feeling was never stronger than when I would watch him put some frazzled Senior through the wringer because they filled out their thesis printing request incorrectly. I always thought he was teac...
Craig was a beautiful guy. I'm so sorry to learn that he passed away. Craig's lair was a place that you never wanted to go with a late print job because of his famous snarl. Once you earned his friendship his snarl was still present but softer and more forgiving. Craig was famously tolerant of seniors and probably saved dozens of students from an i...
I met Craig in my first week at Reed, and I was warned by my co workers "that Craig could be on the grumpy side, so if he growls at you don't take it personally". I never did, and Craig and I become good friends, we talked about life and what are interests outside of work were, his of course sports especially golf. We dealt with our parents being...
I don't know when I first learned about Craig's devotion to the Masters, but I am pretty sure it was one of the years when one of the less well known folks won -- Immelman or Schwartzel, so I picked the date for one of those. I thought this was the best personal hobby, and always enjoyed hearing about the trips. Add in the fact that Craig was alway...
Craig always came through whenever I needed anything. And I always enjoyed stopping in to say hi or check in with him. One memory that stands out is when my daughter was in second grade and we decided to make homemade Valentines, Craig provided us with all the paper supplies we needed. He was always generous with his time and energy and was kind...
I met Craig my first week at Reed when I locked myself out of our office and had to use his phone to call CSOs for an unlock. I thought perhaps this garnered me status as one of his "special folks" on campus (but reading through the memories here I see we were all "special folks" to him). In 2017 when I asked if we could pay to have our posters for...
Craig helped me tremendously with my thesis and other printing/binding needs throughout my time at Reed. My conversations with Craig and Judy were always filled with stories and laughter. I still remember the old faculty portraits and student handbooks at the corner, as well as the colorful, homemade notepads. Although not many students knew him by...
I started working at Reed in 2013 and I met Craig shortly afterwards. Craig was the kind of man who you saw across the quad, minding his own business, maybe on the way to commons and you couldn't help yourself, you called out "Craig, how are you?" and you just knew he was going to tell you "Peachy" or "Another day in paradise" or "Just glad to be h...
I first met Craig in 2013 when I began working at Reed in CIS. I was trying to resolve discrepancies between two printing accounts and had to ask Craig for some information I needed. He was a bit short with me at first, but eventually was very helpful and quickly became a good contact for a new guy. In the process I would say we became casual frie...
"How are you doing, Craig?" "Oh, you know, living the dream." Sarcasm may not be the most popular of sentiments, but Craig's particular style always enlivened my day. What I learned about Craig over the years was the well of empathy beneath the sarcastic veneer. I sought his help with a number of meaningful personal projects outside of our normal w...
I am so thankful to have known Craig and benefited from his care and skill. I met Craig when I first joined Reed in 2014 and needed business cards. Craig not only set me up for the cards, but in the process walked me through the college's billing procedures, the responsibilities of different offices, and other institutional structures. He knew ever...
I am very grateful to have known and worked with Craig. When I first started at Reed in 2015, Craig was one of the first people I was introduced to as "an important person to know." I did a lot of events that required a lot of promotion, which meant tons of flyers and brochures to print. Craig was always SUPER QUICK with his turn-around time and he...
As so many of you have said, Craig was unfailingly helpful and patient with extraordinary demands and unreasonable timelines. He printed countless concert programs and posters for the Reed Chorus and Collegium for me over the years, always on time and without complaint. I especially enjoyed his stories about the time he went to the Masters' tour...
When I started at Reed in July of 2016, I was lucky that Craig was one of the first people I got to meet. Eliot was so empty that summer, but of course he was there. I shared that I was off to visit family in the UK later on, and quickly learned of his passion for the Beetles and golfing (if I recall correctly, he had even golfed the Old Course at ...
Thank you Craig. You were such an inspiration to me. You showed how to be your true self no matter what. I loved that about Craig. He was so sweet to me when I started at Reed in 2019. I could always count on him to make me laugh and I hope I gave him as many back. We both love Hawai'ian shirts and I always gave him mad props for his AMAZING sense ...
Calm, cool, not-to-serious (Hawaiian shirts, even in December), always positive responses to my frantic, beyond-last-minute requests to print a HUM 110 handout -- and get it to Vollum by 9am!?!?! -- year after year, epitomize my experience of Craig. I will miss his wry, generous spirit.
I was very sad to hear that Craig had passed. His hard work and dedication have been remarked on by all those who interacted with him, including people in my office. Craig may have looked very serious on the outside to those who didn't interact with him much, but this just made the smiles and laughs he cracked on occasion feel more special. I will ...
I am so sad to hear of Craig's passing. His wry sense of humor and amazing technical skills made working with him such a joy. We use the Print Shop often for the Cooley Gallery, and Craig was endlessly patient through all of our test runs for the perfect posters or archival prints. I will miss his professional generosity and his one-word emails tha...
Reed Public Affairs I work in public affairs and was fortunate to have Craig report to me for a few years . . . . he was hardworking and a hoot. He had his own way of doing things and he delivered. He accomplished thousands and thousands of projects for public affairs over the many years he worked at Reed. We are forever grateful for his work and friendship. We will miss him (especially his sarcasm). The volume of printing he did on a weekly basis was astounding, but nothing like when it came time to print and bind student theses. There are hundreds of theses in the Thesis Tower that were assembled by him alone. I post this picture of bound theses in memory of him. May he rest in peace.
Like many who entered the print shop with a printing need, I arrived with a touch of anxiety as well as a (hidden) smile anticipating the discussion with Craig! My needs were usually last minute and not well formulated. Craig would growl quietly and look at me with the look I deserved (typical slop I expect from you Paul) and when he was sure I acc...
For my first six years at Reed, my office was in the basement of Eliot, so the self-serve copy machine in the print shop and morning conversations with Craig (and Judy Cox's unmistakable laugh) were part of my daily campus-scape. I would have been grateful enough for Craig's unbroken string of 11th-hour printing miracles. But he and I were also big...
How telling that I always looked forward to visiting the print shop, hardly a glamorous errand, because seeing Craig in action was so pleasurable. His ability to get the job done, with the perfect mix of good humor and blarney in his eye, left me smiling every time.
All I ever had to do was make a request and I would have it in hand the next day if not sooner. You will be greatly missed.
When I started working at Reed, Craig made me look like a "star". Over the next 13 years he made me shine. I hope I thanked him more than he thought was necessary. Craig let me call him "Pumpkin". I don't know how it got started, but it stuck. He left an imprint on my heart.
One of my first conversations with Craig was about the 2001 Mariners. We figured that one more legitimate starting pitcher would cement their dynasty, as they finished the season with 116 wins, tying the major league record for a season. It was also the last time they made the playoffs and we always had a laugh about that. Lots more talk over th...
Most of the many emails I’ve had from Craig over the years had a single, laconic line: “All done. Thanks.” Professional. Super punctual. To the point. But there was one, from October 8, 2013, that said simply, “I’m sorry for your loss.” I’d lost my toy poodle Dylan to a vicious dog attack , and somehow, Craig found out, and reached out to me. I...
Every spring, hundreds of seniors descended on the printshop to get their thesis printed before graduation and, every spring, Craig managed to get all of their theses done. We have a team in the library that helped students prep their theses for final printing. And it was always such a relief and source of joy when we signed off on the final versio...
Craig had a reputation for not suffering fools, so I always tried not to do anything he would deem as coming from a fool. He always treated me warmly, and was always providing materials I needed within the day, even if I told him it wasn't needed immediately. I always appreciated the work he did making sure the seniors had their theses printed and ...
I've put this off because it's so hard to imagine Reed without Craig. I echo what others have said. He was a mensch, he was the sweetest curmudgeon that you've ever met, and he will be sorely missed. I had hoped that we would be the retirees trading sarcastic comments sitting in the back at future Reed events. Craig printed so many flyers, postc...
I was sad to hear that Craig passed. He will be missed. I always appreciated his no nonsense approach to getting things done. Over the years he has helped me in many ways and making things happen quickly was a big one! He loved golf and while it isn't my favorite sport, I always enjoyed talking with him about it because he had such a passion fo...
Craig was a character. He was great at running the print shop, but at the same time was amusingly sardonic about the whole work thing. It was fun to drop by over the years, and Craig was always super-helpful and patient, if at times quite legitimately grumpy about last minute requests. I'm truly saddened that he did not get to enjoy his planned ret...
There are so many thoughts and feelings that I have wanted to convey about Craig, and what he meant to me, but it has been difficult to summon the courage and the strength. What words can truly define feelings? It is so hard for me to reconcile the fact that he is gone, nothing I write here will fill that void. Craig was one of the most kind and ...
I was so sad to hear about Craig's passing. I literally had just emailed him to thank him for all his help, knowledge and presence over the years when a colleague of mine told me of of his passing. I am fortunate to have worked with Craig for so long. He put me at ease, as I knew whatever help I asked for he would do it correctly and promptly. B...
Sara Rosenberger Craig had a beautiful warm and friendly smile if you were fortunate enough to see it. If you were a baby or kid, you most definitely got to see it. It was crystal clear how much Craig loved kids and being able to help them. He helped with my kids school camps and volleyball. Here is a Pokémon card we made for Craig last summer, in 2019, as a thank you. I am so sad Craig did not get to use his super powers on his next adventure away from Reed. 💔
Craig, I just cannot believe that you are gone. It's such huge vacuum in my Reed life. Craig and I shared early mornings at Reed and on Trimet. (I cannot quite imagine what Craig might say if he knew that I just could not endure TriMet anymore in Portland's present state.) One distinct and tragic memory of Craig is how he counted his remai...
I miss you so much, my friend. My heart breaks when I walk by the #19 bus stop and you are not there. Or when I walk through the Eliot garden level and can't come through the back door of the printshop to harass you (and receive my share of harassment in return). I miss betting with you on everything (and sometimes winning). And, like Johnny, I mis...

This timeline has been created to capture Reed community members' memories of our longtime colleague, Craig Lauder, who passed away on December 21, 2020. Craig started work in Reed's print shop in 1996. As many of us can attest, he took great care with his work and had exacting standards. He always went the extra mile to ensure that deadlines were met for anyone who came through the door. Every ... more
