Charles was a neighbor when Sue and I first moved onto Highland View in summer of 1972. He was a roommate of Peter Polites 2 doors away. After I was recruited into the Virginia Highland Civic Association, I really got to know Charles and Susan. My first vivid memory of Charles is from early July 1973. It was around the BBQ pit built on the 485 DO...

A letter from my dear friend in New York: March 8, 2021 Dear Susan For me, two memories of Charles stand out from all our decades of knowing one another. In the fall of 1980, you and he were our first guests in NYC, arriving Thanksgiving weekend (I think on your honeymoon but not sure). At any rate, the way we got rid of trash in the buildin...
Sue McConnell This is from a Friendship Force trip. We had 2 great trips with Charles and Susan, the first to China in 1983. We were one of the first American tour groups allowed in after the Cultural Revolution and we were monitored closely. Despite that, Susan and Charles managed to miss a train and were afraid they would never be seen again! Our FF trip to southern England in 1988 was great also. We had a week on our own to tour and Charles volunteered to drive on the "wrong" side of the road. He did great, and we all breathed a sigh of relief, until he backed into a post in a parking garage on the last day! Oh well, never a dull moment with Charles!
I was somewhere between 4-6 and fascinated by Uncle Charles’ missing thumb and the “phantom pains.” And I specifically just recalled him telling me to “scratch his thumb.” (Even though it wasn’t there 😂)

Susan Longley Our last road trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway. First time we’d ever been to Blowing Rock without buying anything! We went with my sister Carol.
We always enjoyed Charles’s stories about the history of Georgia politics, and his tolerance of our politics!! Wish we could have enjoyed Charles more over the years! Our thoughts are with Susan and the children.
