Celebrating the life of

    Carola Mann

    16 Jan 2029 - 15 May 2020

Carola Honroth Mann passed away peacefully of natural causes on May 15th 2020 in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was 91. Born to Elise (Lisa) Loewe Honroth and Heinrich Wilhelm Otto Honroth in Berlin-Dahlem, Germany, she was the youngest and last surviving of three sisters.
Carola was a Mischlinge – Jewish on her mother’s side, Protestant on her father’s side. To protect her from the Nazi regime she was sent to school in Switzerland at the age of nine. Ultimately she reunited there with her mother and sister Marlene, but it was a tumultuous and often lonely time. In 1947 Carola and her mother, by then a widow and gravely ill, booked passage to the United States under the sponsorship of Karen Horney. Her mother died soon after their journey, and Carola lived with her oldest sister Rita and Rita’s husband Fritz in Rockville, Maryland for the next two years.
Carola strove to perfect her English and conceal her German accent, though a hint of it stayed with her throughout her life. After working as a mother’s helper in Montrose, NY, coincidentally just a few miles from the home where she would later raise her family, she moved to New York City. For a time she supported herself as a switchboard operator at the Single Women’s Residence where she also lived.
Carola placed deep value on higher education, received her Bachelor’s degree from Hunter College and went on to receive her Masters from the New School for Social Research in 1953. Carola married John Harvey Mann in 1955 and completed her PhD in psychology at N.Y.U. two years later. Together they began a family, first on the Upper West Side of NYC near John’s parents, then in Rockland County, and finally in Peekskill, New York, where she remained to raise their four children after divorcing John in 1970. She lived on Furnace Dock Road for over forty years, and loved her home dearly.
While raising her kids Carola attended the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis & P
