William John "Bill" Hunter was an Australian actor of film, stage and television who passed away at the age of liver cancer. He was also very well known as a voice-over artist. He appeared in more than 60 films and won two AFI Awards. He is also a recipient of the Centenary Medal. Born 1940 in Ballarat, Hunter had qualified for the Australian swimming team in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. The next year, in 1957, Hunter made his film debut as an extra in 1957 film "The Shiralee." In 1966, he made his television debut in an uncredited role in two episodes of the "Doctor Who" serial, "The Ark." In 1978, He starred in the drama film, "Newsfront" for which he won an AFI Award. He starred as an Australian officer Major Barton in the film "Gallipoli" in 1981 for which he won the AACTA Award.
