    Celebrating the life of

    Angi Alderson

    Family and friends

I have created this page to give everyone a chance to look back and celebrate my Mum's life. She was taken from us too soon, certainly, but boy did she pack a lot of love, laughs and adventures in to those 70 years! Kat and I would be so happy so to see everyone add their own memories (stories, photos or videos) to this page. We won't take it down, it will remain forever a testament to a life wel... more

Ben Alderson Having fun at my Lancing College Leavers Ball, my last night at Lancing. Sending me to Lancing was one of the best decisions Mum ever made for me. She knew it wouldn't be easy for her to 'send me away' but she also knew it was the right school and boarding would bring out the best in me. Whilst I was initially hesistant I ended up thriving at Lancing and I credit that decision by Mum as one of the most selfless and savvy calls she ever made. Thank you Mum!

    Nov 2009

Robin & Marion Sundt We were married in the Lake District on 13th November 2009 and Angi was one of the very special people who joined us on that day. The day before, Robin took his children and Angi up Fleetwith Pike via Honister Slate Mine. Angi couldn't resist doing hand stands against the wheel of a giant digger! Sitting on the summit, she looks very cold but it was a lovely day, full of fun and laughter. The following day, Angi appeared as her elegant alter ego.

    Feb 2010

Robin & Marion Sundt Marion and Angi used to go on long walks together. Sometimes it was when Angi was trying out routes for her walking group and sometimes it was just for pleasure. Marion tended to do the map reading! These walks were a source of great delight to both of us as we both loved the countryside. Despite the notice, we didn't see a single low-flying owl, much to Angi's disappointment. On one of our walks, we came across the ruined chapel in a wood in the middle of nowhere.

    Jul 2010

Robin & Marion Sundt In July 2010, we took Angi to France to celebrate her retirement. On the way, we visited friends in Le Touquet, where she posed beside an appropriately named coach. We stayed overnight at Patrick's Chateau at Montigné les Rairies. We then went on to Robin's house in Peyrat de Bellac and spent two days at the incredible "Puy de Fou" theme park in the Vendée region. She enjoyed "Puy de Fou" so much that she had booked to go back last year but sadly she was not well enough to go.

Mik Alderson “And is not that a Mother's gentle hand that undraws your curtains, and a Mother's sweet voice that summons you to rise? To rise and forget, in the bright sunlight, the ugly dreams that frightened you so when all was dark.” Lewis Carroll It was and is and shall always be. Who are we, any of us, if not the sum of our Mother’s love? Our Lewis, a literary Northerner, had the right of it. In Darlington in the 1830s, they would have judged a character by the start they got in life. A youngster’s moral fibre was his all. If Our Lewis had met Our Ben he’d have been under no illusion. Thank you Angela. Rest easy. Your love speaks louder than you could know. (shots from Perth, Australia, Nov. 2010)

Robin & Marion Sundt In 2016, Angi visited us on our narrowboat "Many Meetings" along with Geraldine and Rob. They were staying in a B&B overnight close to the Marina, so we were able to spend a full day cruising. The previous day, Angi had gone to Burton on Trent to research her father's early years. Angi and Geraldine soon got the hang of doing the locks while Rob tried his hand at steering the boat. After an absolutely super day, we all had dinner in our favourite Italian restaurant in Stone. The following day Angi drove on to Lincoln to visit a friend.

Ben Alderson Celebrating her Father's 100th Birthday - Mum put so much hard work and effort in to making my Grandad's centenary a wonderful day to remember. But more than that, from the time that my Grandad's age forced him to move out of his own home in his mid 90's Mum was the perfect daughter, having him move in with her initially and then visiting him regularly during his stay in Valerie Manor care home. She couldn't have done more to care for and support Grandad throughout his last years.

    2017

Robin & Marion Sundt Angi and Marion made frequent visits to the RHS Gardens at Wisley. In 2017/18, they tried to visit every month so that they could see the changing seasons and the way that the gardens developed. This photograph is one of Marion's favourites, it was taken in January and they both marvelled at the winter colours of the willow and dogwood.

Ben Alderson A walk on the Worthing coast together. Despite being on a heavy and regular course of chemo, Mum loved getting out for walks as often as possible. The way Mum took on her diagnosis and battled her Cancer was inspirational, for me and many others. And I know this because many people have told me both before and since she passed away. She never complained about her treatment, in fact she embraced it. If it wasn't managing to beat the tumour, it was at least giving her more time with her family and friends, which she treasured. Her positivity was at the same time incredible and also nothing less than I would ever have expected, knowing Mum as I did. She was and will always be my hero. I miss her every second of every day, but I know she is with me, wherever I am, whatever I am up to.

John Alderson In memoriam: Angie Alderson (nee Scattergood) Angie was born and brought up in Reigate, Surrey. She always said how much she treasured her formative years in that corner of England and her love for it never waivered. It became, to my mind, inevitable that she would eventually return to her roots in the south-east after her sojourn in the north. Angie and I spent a fabulous decade together in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. We shared passions for sport, travel and active holidays, as well as for one another. And it was a time in which Angie formed some of those deep and lasting relationships that Ben has spoken of; for example, with Cookie, Pete & Julie, Clive & Lindy and Louise. We made homes together, firstly in Woodlands Close and then in Mill Barn, Ben’s home for the first years of his life. And of course, it is he, Ben, that constitutes the most important and lasting outcome of our relationship. He was a beautiful baby and has matured into a wonderful adult human being, of whom we parents both became intensely proud. I remember with great respect the love, care, guidance and support that Angie personally and consistently provided for Ben throughout his childhood. But equally, I am grateful for the way she facilitated my regular access to Ben after she and he left Yorkshire, and, for the positive and meaningful influences provided to him through her relationship with John Faulkner. I echo Ben’s sentiment that Angie was taken too soon. It is such a shame that she could not enjoy significantly more years of active and fulfilling retirement, especially after the years of dedicated commitment to the care of her father, Bill Scattergood, a man with whom I would like to have spent more time in his later years. It has been a painful experience for Hazel and me to witness, through Ben’s communications, Angie’s illness, the discomfort of her repeated bouts of treatment and the particular difficulties of her last few weeks. I recognise the stoicism with which he reported that she dealt with those challenges. Angie, those positive traits of your personality, so eloquently described by Ben, will live on in the minds of so many who knew you, and, in the ongoing life of that person who is our son. He is your greatest legacy. Rest in Peace. John Alderson

Angie joined Henfield Badminton club late in 2014 and was an enthusiastic and energetic player who got hugely frustrated at her mistakes more than those of her partners. She and I became very good friends over the coming months and years and shared many social outings when she had a slot in her very full diary. Having lost my wife she listened empa...

Hari Flanagan Angie lived with us while waiting for her cottage to go through the legal process. We shared lunches in the garden, at posh venues and she inspired a neighbours fitness drive. Her fishy toasties were less of a hit, but her appreciation of family, travel and love were our main shared experiences. We would talk for hours about these important values and wonderful experiences. She offered such light and song that we always felt uplifted by her presence. Feeling blessed to have had her grace our lives. The picture is one of her celebrating Rob's 40th 3 years ago. Hari & Rob

Robin & Marion Sundt Going through our photographs has brought back so many happy memories of time spent with Angi. This, however, is our favourite, taken on the towpath in Stone when she joined us on our narrowboat. For us, this epitomises her sense of fun and her lovely relaxed outgoing nature. Dear Angi was such a remarkable lady, her extraordinary energy, independence, curiosity, kindness, loyalty and generosity - the list goes on and on. Already, we miss her so much.

Louise Swainson I thought that these two photos would add to Angela's earlier years 'with children' section. They are of the tenting holiday in the Loire where we found some fantastic campsites and ate some delicious cakes. A fun time and lovely memories. Louise, John and Hannah Swainson

    29 Jul 2020

David Finney I met Angi in 2012, when I joined Sussex walking clubs, and we were at once comfortable in each others’ company, soon becoming friends. I found her fun to be with but not one to suffer fools, and we could speak frankly with one another. Angi was very determined and she strove headlong to reach her goals, as her achievement in acquiring the home she loved, in West End Lane, Henfield, demonstrated. I also admired Angi’s sporting abilities, her competitiveness, her remarkable fitness and her care for her health, all traits she shared with my late wife, who didn’t like coming second either. Maybe those similarities helped us to get on so well? While Angi was a go-getter, I am more cautious. She got me into group walking holidays, something that hadn’t appealed greatly, by asking me if I’d like to accompany her, in June 2016, to the Dolomites with HF Holidays. I went, enjoyed it and have since become a fan of such holidays, so thank you Angi for giving me that little push. The photo shows Angi on top of Seceda, a peak near Selva; no ordinary holiday pose. I think “Who Dares Wins” could have been Angi’s motto and it is tragic that, after a remarkable fight, she was unable to overcome her last and biggest challenge, but how she tried. Throughout that awful 18 months, Angi bore her illness and all the gruelling treatment with extraordinary courage, dignity and good humour. Rest in peace, my dear Angi, I miss you no end. David xx

Jan Grange I met Angi in 1998 when our sons started at Lancing College. I'm pretty sure it would have been watching the boys playing sport; we were both single mums cheering on from the sidelines - we got chatting and became firm friends. My extraordinary darling friend, there is so much to treasure and remember about you - where do I begin? You were stunning, determined, upbeat, supremely energetic, interested in so much, and with a huge heart and an enormous sense of what was just and fair. My time-keeping drove you nuts; your thrift to the nth degree sometimes exasperated me but we could always laugh about our differences because there was so much more that we shared, particularly the same sense of humour. In 2004 we holidayed together near Ravello on the stunning Amalfi coast and we just giggled for an entire week. I also recall you watching the rugby with my husband in the last few months - with both of you yelling at the TV! The overwhelmingly positive way that you approached this horrible illness and all the ghastly treatment, was utterly extraordinary; that very attitude actually made it so much more bearable for everyone who loved you and journeyed with you. Thank you. You believed you could beat it and your courage was truly inspirational. I shall miss you terribly. Jan Grange

Dear Angi We decided that, instead of you just writing about you, we’d write to you. We do hope you can be aware of this, and all the wonderful tributes that people have written about you, from wherever your soul is now. As the wonderful celebrant said at your funeral – you are now returned to the ‘everywhere’: the wind, the trees and the gra...
