Todd Macey Buddy holding our cat Frank in Vermont when he came out for Sarah's graduation from law school. Buddy has always been drawn to cats. There are probably various parallels to draw, but I think Buddy has a lot in common with cats. He was always hyper aware of his surroundings. He sometimes just needed his own space to recharge for a bit. Like a cat, he could have a mysterious aura about him. He was loving and gentle and kind. (I guess some cats scratch but his cat Shannon never did.) And hanging out and sharing a moment with Buddy was always extra special. His presence, like a cat, even if he wasn't actively involved, always brought good energy. This photo was taken in the Vermont "barn house" that Sarah and I were living Sarah's last year of law school along with roommates Brian, Natalie, and Alex.
I remember sitting next to Buddy on a small plane when we were flying to Alaska together as a family. I was telling him how anxious I was about dying in a plane crash (especially in tiny bush planes) when he said to me something along the lines of "yeah but we've already experienced so much more than other people ever do in their entire lifetimes....
Todd Macey These are a few pics from one of the Wiedemann family trips to the Virgin Islands. I remember Buddy trying to stay patient as the guy renting us the kayaks explained the safety tips he already knew. We then got into our kayaks and paddled over to a small beach. Once there, we put our snorkel gear on and the energy all of a sudden changed. I remember Buddy and I freaking out about some crazy looking fish/squid things. I feel like Sarah, Buddy, and I were all feeding off each other's excitement. A bit later, I ran back to the beach from our shallow water snorkel spot... "I saw a f-ing shark!" I think Buddy believed me for an instant and got excited before applying his deductive reasoning that no way that was a shark. He and I went over to the spot I saw it and of course the thing was gone. Buddy spent the next hour (pouring into lunch) alternating between laughing at me and trying to figure out what that thing was. I think we ultimately figured out it was some kind of big silver fish that is sometimes found in the Virgin Islands. This small moment I think speaks to Buddy's never-ending curiosity to learn all about the world around him. If he ran into something new (which was pretty rare) or presented with some new mystery or challenge, he could become intensely passionate about figuring out. That was always fun to be involved during those moments.
Cecie Culp Not really a memory, but was just sending a text to someone and realized that my phone auto-corrects the word “buddy” into the capitalized version, “Buddy.” Obviously anyone who knew Andrew knew that this was basically his name and somehow despite the fact that I never really called him that, it brings me a sense of comfort to occasionally have this technological artifact show up in my life and feels like a technological way to always have a little reminder of him. And, if Andrew were ever going to be a “ghost” (I realize how silly this sounds, haha), I am convinced he’d haunt me in the form of technology, so this is kind of fitting. Anyways, this just happened and it made me think of and miss him ❤️
