I was privileged to work with Dr Baviera on a project with the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation. She impressed me as a very sharp intellectual, but with a lot of humility. She treated young members of the team like me like colleagues. She had no qualms consulting us like we had the best ideas in the world. A true mentor, she really was.
Techie Severino It seems that 1 tribute post is not enough for someone as well-loved and respected as you. The last time I saw you was during Tito Bobby’s birthday in January. I remember sitting next to you at one time. I hope someday I can recall what we talked about then. I am posting a photo of you with Jorge and Mama. This was taken on New Year’s Day 2011, during our annual Angkan get together. I hope you are as happy now as you looked in this picture. “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years.” Godspeed, Aileen. Please hug Papa, Mama, Chito and Jenny for us. 💔
Michiyo Yoneno-Reyes I had the privilege to work with you at the UP Asian Center. The years when you were the dean were crucial ones for my career development as a young faculty member. I learned a lot from you. You were indeed a model administrator. I am most thankful that you fought for tenureship of foreign faculty members. Unfortunately, it was not realized, but that is because you were far advanced in thinking than ordinary ones. Through the years, you joined me enjoying the growth of our son Ken---I was still breastfeeding him when I joined the AC. Eventually, you became our family friend. I am posting a memorable photograph of us taken when we had a panel discussion with the late Benedict Anderson at the University of the Philippines, on March 11, 2013. It's certainly "hard to imagine" we won't have another photo together. You have been working so hard. Please rest in peace. Enjoy your reunion with George. I love you, Aileen!
Daniel Dominic Ambat I recall during 2017, at Chinese Geopolitics class that we had a negotiations simulation. That was fun! I also remember having so many back and forth emails regarding my research poster - I'm sure that you were very very very annoyed at my numerous mistakes and yet, you were so patient and kind towards me... Fast forward to 2019, you become my thesis adviser. It would take around 2-3 weeks intervals of exchanges, with 3 months interval being the longest. I recall on how you most brilliantly making my complex, gibberish thoughts and writing into the simplest and most elegant of expressions. I felt like an ant compared to your gentle giant. I learned that being clear is better than being clever. Thank you for mentoring me, in the short amount of time that we have gotten to know each other. Thank you for your guidance and inspiration, Ma'am Aileen.
Aiko Doden I am still in disbelief. It is far too early for you to go. I wanted to continue the conversation where we left off, about ASEAN, about China, about Japan, about the US, about your work as a devoted academic, about my work as journalist and how we could collaborate ... You will be greatly missed. But we will continue the work you have left behind. And I will always remember you, as I see you with your smile in this picture of that fun gathering in 2017 after an ASEAN event in Manila. My condolences to your family. May you rest in eternal peace. Aiko Doden.

Deepest sympathies to the Baviera and San Pablo families. Rest in peace, Aileen, colleague and friend.
Aileen will be best remembered as a fine political scientist and security analyst, a respected professor and much loved mentor. I fondly remember Aileen as a fellow student at Peking University in the early 1980s. We took classes in different programs but we met frequently after class and shared experiences and insights. Thank you for all that you have done to the country, Aileen!
Outside her classroom Ma'am Aileen would still take an interest in the lives of her students. One morning she asked me: 'Noeh, why are you really keen on taking Chinese studies?' I sheepishly replied: 'Ma'am, I really believe Mandarin will be the lengua franca of the future. English will be set aside. And China will have dominance in the global ma...

Tita Aileen, you were such a light in my childhood and I continue to look up to you as a mother now. You have lived a full life and the people whose lives you've touched are so blessed and lucky to have known such a beautiful, humble and warm soul. You will always be in our thoughts. A kind , sweet, and awesome professor in her field of study.Thank you very much Prof. Aileen Baviera for your teachings in our younger days. You are now with the Lord. May your soul rest in peace.Amen.❤🙏 #U.P. Naming Mahal
Aileen Baviera was probably the most unflappable person I ever knew. When she was Dean at the UP Asian Center and I was her Asst. Dean, we would sometimes disagree on some academic or administrative matter. Our arguments would get so heated that I would find myself literally screaming to her face. Would she scream back? Not Aileen. She would remain...
We will miss you Aileen, your calm erudite explanation of things Asian, first in the classes we took together, and in conversations after that where China became your intellectual forte. Denden Alicias It took a while to sink in ‘coz we just exchanged text messages two days ago. We lost a brilliant mind and a good soul. We lost a clear-headed academic, an epitome of composure, a patriot. We lost a mentor, a colleague, a friend. Paalam, Ma’am Aileen at maraming salamat! You will be missed ❤️🙏🏼
I met tita Aileen through her daughter, my good friend Mara. My memories of her will always be her gentleness and welcoming smile at their QC home. Always composed and graceful. Aside from her scholarly contributions, her intellect and beauty will always be apparent with her 3 amazing legacies. My deepest sympathies to Mara, Mayi and Bitoy.

Prof Dr Aileen San Pablo Baviera was Dean of the UP Asian Center from 2004-2010. May you Rest In Peace Madam Aileen Baviera.
Our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Aileen Baviera
We lost a dear colleague who had a good grasp of the East and the West, with the skeptical mind that always looked out for our country’s interests. Our competence in China analysis, and with it our ability to engage China’s policy scholars, is diminished by Aileen’s abrupt departure.

Condolences to the Baviera family. We wish you well.
I will always remember Dr. Aileen San Pablo Baviera as one of my favorite professors ever. Godspeed Aileen. I will always remember your wisdom, grace and kindness. Condolences to the family.
Florence Gamboa As a young student, Ma’am Aileen made me feel like my voice and opinions mattered. She taught me how to be objective when viewing China. She supported me on all the challenges in grad school. Most of my cognate electives were under her as well. She would also often drop me at my apartment after class since our class ends late at night. If meron ngang major ang IS, I would probably be a Baviera major. Our group, Philip, Grace, Ivy and others would call ourselves Baviera Babies. As her employee, she showed me how to be professional yet sincere and caring at the same time. She lets us have our own voice when we write our articles. She doesn’t manipulate how we will word it or how our outlook should be. She’s a bit forgiving sa deadlines because she too is very busy at madami ring deadlines. When she knew I was going back and forth Bulacan everyday to work, she offered for me to stay at her home sometime if needed! She brings us pasalubong from all her trips and all our birthdays in the office nagttreat sya. Kahit ikaw ang may birthday. All our birthdays may cake na sagot din nya, and all the holidays spent with her may gift sya sa amin, even my husband may gift sya. Even my dog, Sundae loves her. When I got Sundae spayed, she allowed me to take a day off work. Not a lot of bosses will allow this. But Ma’am understood kasi she’s a dog lover herself. She has 10+ dogs! One time it reached 20 pa yata. She gave me 3 dogs which have been adopted by my siblings. As my mentor and ninang, she’s supportive on what I do with life. She was excited during my wedding planning, laging nangangamusta. She was excited when I got pregnant and gave birth. I’m so glad my baby had the chance to meet her. She’s just the person to go to when you’re struggling to come up with a decision or when you’re happy and you want to share something to someone genuinely concerned. She really is much like a mother to me. I will miss her so much but I know she’s also probably happy now that she’s with sir Jorge as well. I will never forget everything she has taught and everything she did for me. I will try my best to make you proud Ma’am Aileen!
Maraminng salamat po, Ma'am Aileen! Mahal ka namin. Walang hanggang paalam po!

Bubbles Asor Rest in peace and many thanks, Dr. Aileen San Pablo Baviera. It was a huge honour to be your student. I learned many things from you about developing countries especially China, Brazil and India. More importantly, your pedagogic commitment, kindness and calmness as a teacher and scholar helped shape who I am as a teacher now. I remember one vivid memory about Dr. Baviera. One time when my only two classmates were absent, she made me discuss all readings on three countries. The class lasted for 3 hours but there was a heavy downpour when we were about to go home. She told me that she could drop me off and she did in front of my house. Big and small gestures from teachers and professors like Dr. Baviera can shape, influence and inspire other people to become good teachers and scholars as well.
To my former adviser who never gave up on me, mahal kita Dra. Aileen San Pablo Baviera. Ang dami kong natutunan sa classes mo. When she visited our university to give a lecture, she asked me to take her to the shop buying souvenirs. I accompanied her to the supermarket and she bought a lot of Dabao lotion. Gus Cerdeña We at Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Philippine Office extend our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, friends, and colleagues of Prof. Dr. Aileen San Pablo-Baviera in this time of immense grief. Prof. Dr. Baviera was a political scientist and President of the Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation, a partner of FES Philippines. Tonton Mina Tita Aileen, I'm posting a candid photo from our send-off dinner for Mara over ten years ago. You were the only one aware of the camera, and Tito Jorge looked amused about something. I am really ignorant of your many academic and professional achievements so I treasure not so serious memories like that photo. Thank you also for the many times you had me over for meals, holy week breaks, Christmases and games with your family. One of my favorite memories with you is when you let out a good laugh over my Taboo strategy of choosing the words "horrific" and "afraid" for "scurry". You may have already forgotten that, but I hope you are now at peace, smiling and laughing like in that lovely summer afternoon.
Arlington Memorial Chapels Please pray this 9-day novena prayer for Aileen daily every 6pm until March 29, 2020.

Thitinan Pongsudhirak Professor Aileen Baviera’s untimely passing from coronavirus-related pneumonia elicited as much shock as sadness. Not only didshe have many more miles to go, Aileen was the warmest and most understated among our types within the global community of think-tanks. Characteristically unassuming and collegial, Aileen’s soft-spoken style belied her formidable role as senior scholar, teacherand mentor, editor of up-and-coming Asian Politics & Policy academic journal, and founder of the Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation, a Manila-based strategic studies platform and partner within the ASEAN ISIS consortium of think-tanks. I saw the mark of her leadership and hidden force of personality in her ability to assemble an all-star team to start up APPPF,where she was likely less a matriarch than a sister for whom her assistants and younger colleagues wanted to work for. To me, Aileen was so gentle and kind that she could not have hurt a fly. Yet she had a way of getting things done, of enticing others todo things together under her initiative. I always said ‘yes’ whenever I could to whatever she asked because Aileen was always conducting activities and promoting endeavours above and beyond herself for the larger whole. While someone in her capacity surelywould have had a hundred tasks to think about at any given time, Aileen was always unhurried when she and I had conversation. It was as if she had all the time in the world, attentively clear and present. As her counterpart and friend in Bangkok, and on behalf of ISIS Thailand, I am saddened by Aileen’s departure for good. I extenddeepest condolences to her family and friends, colleagues, students, and others who admired and treasured her in their own way. As a token of remembrance, I attach an image of an old photo of Asia’s first-generation think-tank scholars from more than threedecades ago – which Aileen once confirmed to me that indeed it was she who was seated fifth from right.
