Abigail "Abby" Overstreet Kuhn was born in Oakland on September 30th 1990. She attended Marin schools including Neil Cummins Elementary, Hall Middle School, and graduated from Redwood High School before graduating from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Abby had a quick wit, strong sense of humor, and one of the biggest hearts of anyone those who spent time with her knew. Abby spent childhood sum... more

Natalie Kuhn Abby shared this photo of herself in a text April 24th 2021 saying, "I'm pretty convinced this is still how I use a computer". She was always quick to make jokes even if about herself. Abby often claimed she was not a big technology person, but she was undoubtedly brilliant in so many other ways as it related to philosophy, art, fashion, music, pop culture, humanity... countless other areas that I probably don't even know.
Natalie Kuhn My Little Pony, castles, and lollipops–a great day.
Natalie Kuhn Not sure whether I was copying you or you were copying me but here we are posing in Lake Huron during a summer vacation in Harbor Beach.

Natalie Kuhn We made a lot of little houses out of boxes growing up. We also used shelves and cupboards. There were two larger shelves in a bookcase in our Sausalito home that we turned into mini bunk beds to hang out in during the day.

Natalie Kuhn Our mom telling Abby some kind words about loving her, the beautiful scenery, and just being happy to be together on one of our first camping trips as a family. It was cold out but we had the fire to keep us warm.
You and I both hated spiders. At one point we were told that spiders only lived in ceiling corners just so it was easier to check those corners before going to bed at night. One time in our Sausalito home playhouse I got trapped in a tiny crawlspace because a HUGE spider hanging from its web was blocking the way to get out. I was absolutely terrifi...

Natalie Kuhn This is the Montessori school Abby and I attended. There was a ramp up to the door and we thought that the bird in the clouds in the front window looked like a bird eating popcorn. There was a window that looked like the sun facing the yard we would play in with a vegetable garden.
Natalie Kuhn Goofing around under a table
Natalie Kuhn We went to a Montessori school in Sausalito called Sparrow Creek and each year Judith and Craig (couple who owned the school, also photographers) would take beautiful black and white portraits of the children. This was the first year she was at Montessori wearing her favorite dress from a Minnie Mouse costume.

Amelie Sterling I remember our younger days at Harbor Beach, I was always so thankful I had Abby and Natalie to play with as well as Angel and Trinity in the huge sea of adults. Lol I would get super annoyed when Daniel, my younger brother, would try to tag along with our girl gang.
Natalie Kuhn Eating together in our home on Cazneau Avenue in Sausalito–looks like some kind of ice cream 🍨
Margot Mehringer Abby was Stylin' at an early age. Natalie can still remember the sound of that motorcycle running over the porch floor and the little yellow thing she is holding is a baby chick toy that would make a cheeping sound if you held it so that it was sitting in your palm.

Natalie Kuhn Just some silly little kid quotes: *Abby eating something she wasn't suppose to have* "Abby, what do you have in your mouth??" "Teeth." "Abby, can you / do you... <insert anything>" "No, go fish." "Abby, what do you want as a side?" "Corn on the cobweb." "Abby, wow this is a great chocolate dessert, how did you make it?" "First, I put the M&Ms in my mouth, then I chewed them, then I put them in the microwave, then..."

Natalie Kuhn It was hard to get our childhood cat Watty to stay still for this photo but somehow we managed–three generations. Photo Credit: Lucy Byrne.
Natalie Kuhn Just an average evening brushing our teeth with a Little Mermaid doll laying in the background. We loved that movie and both wanted Ariel costumes.
Natalie Kuhn We ate ribs to celebrate the 4th of July and you couldn't stop laughing. You kept saying "happy fourth of July" in a sing song voice for hours and waving a small American flag.
Natalie Kuhn Abby and me dressed up for Halloween. We had both wanted to be black cats for a few years in a row. It was an easy costume–black clothing, black boas, black cat ears. After accepting candy as a smaller child, by the time Abby got to the 5th grade instead of candy she preferred to ask for Unicef donations in the little orange box they provided.

Natalie Kuhn Our mom made Abby this Coca Cola can appropriately redesigned to read "Abby Cola". It was a huge hit amongst the other kids and the adults we visited while trick-or-treating. The funny thing is that some adults providing candy thought that it had a bottom, which it didn't, so they would drop the candy "into the can" only for it to fall to the ground. Abby couldn't bend over to get the candy because of the shape of the costume so each time the candy fell onto the pavement / floor she would say, "thank you!" and then I would bend over to pick it up for her to put into her jack-o'-lantern plastic purse container.

One afternoon I was riding my bike around our driveway and got a little close to the edge that was hanging over a steep hill / ravine. Somehow I managed to grab onto a tree on my way over the edge, and ended up stuck dangling there with my bike being held by my legs. You saw my predicament and immediately ran for help. At first you just said to our...
Natalie Kuhn We had our driveway freshly paved and we were excited to go out in bare feet to run around one day. It was great until you found the ONE dead bee to step on. It still had its stinger and so you were stung. We laughed about the chances and how quickly the mood shifted.

Natalie Kuhn Sterling family reunion in London. Abby and I both kept a journal to document the experience provided to us by our grandmother "Mimi". According to Abby's childhood journal some of the reunion highlights included: taking photos of the Buckingham Palace guards, train rides, playing croquet with our cousins (Amelie, Daniel) and her winning because I hit her ball through, going to the pool, staying in a few different hotels, and good food.

Natalie Kuhn Abby, Great Aunt Lee, and me celebrating our grandmother "Grammy's" 82nd birthday at McCormick & Kuleto's Seafood & Steaks near Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli. We sat in a booth, and got the entire restaurant to sing her happy birthday "dear mom" (I guess our mom's voice was the clearest for the restaurant to hear). Our mom took the photo of the two different generations of sisters. Abby recalled it as "awkward" in a photo journal lol–we were both at that age where any extra attention was a bad thing.
Natalie Kuhn For Christmas we were given a video camera so we started making "horror/monster" movies (not really sure how to be specific on genre, we were kids) at home and in HB. One of us would dress up and chase the other around. I wish I could find copies. At one point we wanted to "add drama" by including a car accident and staged Clare Hubbard lying by the side of the road as if she was hit by a truck. We couldn't stop laughing. There was NO plot, no sense, just filming things to make them look like something they were not. Constant entertainment.
Clare Hubbard We had been roped into passing hors d’oeuvres because HBRA’ers prefer their snacks to be served by cranky tween-teens. I know we would have much preferred to be closing out the pool. This is the age where we don’t want any photo evidence so I share an equally awkward photo of Jos and I in solidarity. 💕

One of the funniest memories I have of us was when we lured the unsuspecting Dave Morgan to your cottage with a pack of uno cards. New to the resort, we were trying to get the brooding new boy next door (literally, since his cottage was between ours) to come hang out with us. He kept politely declining our verbal offers so when he went up to Smalle...

Natalie Kuhn During the summer I had an internship with a bath and body products small business called Zbath. They had a new product coming out for teens called "Lips by Ruby" or something like that. Abby, me, and a coworker Hannah did a ridiculous photoshoot to create photography for the line in our home backyard. My female boss even made comments that Abby had "the perfect look" for the Ruby line–thinking about her cute short hair and general style.
Natalie Kuhn We only overlapped in high school for one year. We didn't see each other a ton with being in different grades, but one year you made me a birthday collage and hung it up everywhere. I was embarrassed about the attention and had no idea who did it for a time. Of course it was you and because it was you I was ok with it.
Natalie Kuhn One day in high school you asked me about running since I was on both the cross country and track teams. You played on the high school tennis team at the time. I offered to take you on a run and you essentially cursed me out the entire time. We couldn't stop laughing, but you really hated it. I probably should have picked something shorter than 3 miles to start. I had you run around Phoenix Lake (common cross country route)–there were huge hills, it was a hot day with the sun really beating down, but I had thought you might enjoy the view without thinking of the overall terrain. Oops.

Ceci Browne "Les Girls", their Grammy's term. We 3 decided to get to Harbor Beach, MI that year by car rather than to fly... 2,400 miles, Road Trip! This is a tiny image of Natalie and Abby at the base of Mt Rushmore, my Kodak Instamatic?, whatever, but we were overwhelmed by its enormity and feeling small. This one photo unleashed a myriad of memories for me and for Natalie during this time. Some ramblings, we saw all sorts of towns along the way, America, one had a population of 150, whereby one daughter asked, do they count the babies too?, haaha. Yes dear. The biggest city where we stopped early on and spent a couple of nights was at the lovely Peery Hotel there in Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital there and which is situated near the Temple City. 'Mom, what does Mormon mean?'. Hmm, I tried my best to explain all the different beliefs that I could, but of which all of it was very interesting to my daughters and to me. We did enter the historic Mormon Tabernacle the next day, and while there, we remarked to each other on the handcrafted woodwork throughout, which took decades to complete. It was remarkable. Then there was the Great Salt Lake. I pulled over, 'girls get in your swimsuits and hop in'. Really Mom?! But they did and I see them smiling, then eww, it's salty and it is burning our eyes (from both accidental and intentional splashing). They got out immediately. They've always been great troopers. On one unplanned side trip, as we drove on the I-80, was because we saw on the exit sign, "Wild As*es". Oh my, girls, ya wanna go? Laughingly they both said, 'Yess'. We took the exit. More fun. Among the other roaming animals there, we did see a grizzly bear too, Big, and also those 'wild as*es' ;) Oh and the little prairie dogs in southwestern SD at the Badlands. More fun and memories. We saw many parts of America that many don't get to experience. We also stayed in Yellowstone, at the iconic Yellowstone Inn, because we had to see Old Faithful do its thing periodically and we really wanted to see a moose. Nope not there anywhere, but alas, not until we continued out of the park did we see one. Alright! I pulled over, we watched that big animal calmly drink and chew greens in a stream by the side of the road and who was just looking at us all the time. Check that one off.
Natalie Kuhn Freshman Year High School
Natalie Kuhn Game faces on prior to a Redwood High School Varsity Tennis match in the fall.
Natalie Kuhn Abby helped me move into my first college dorm room with our mom and was mistaken for a college freshman herself–she thought it was because of her height. I think it was because Abby was mature beyond her years...so maybe a combination of the two. She went on to talk with the Cal Poly freshman about how she was attending "UCB" in Santa Barbara and he said, "you mean UCSB?" And she confirmed adding that, "she wouldn't miss this time to help her YOUNGER sister move in for the world". Abby was always quick and hilarious with her commentary.

Natalie Kuhn Abby and I visited the Titanic Exhibit at the Metreon in SF sometime between June 2006 and January 2007–I think it was on our winter break from school in 2006. We were each given a Titanic passenger profile and wandered through historically accurate recreations of things like the main ballroom staircase, hallway of rooms, boiler room, and got to look at an actual piece of the ship. The two funniest moments were: 1) When we came across a huge chunk of ice for visitors to "touch to feel how cold an iceberg is". We guessed it was for those who have never experienced an ice cube or snow before... VERY anticlimactic. 2) When we were face to face with an actual piece of the ship and wanted to touch it when there was a sign that specifically said "do not touch". We had a moment where we looked at each other, took a long thoughtful pause, said nothing, and quickly touched the piece of the ship very lightly. Nothing happened. We laughed and laughed about how we were both willing to deal with any ramifications like security or an alarm system just to have briefly touched a piece of the Titanic. This is the ticket that Abby saved.
Natalie Kuhn Various shenanigans with high school friends: hacky sack, attic hangouts, trash bag night slip n slide...
Ivy Ross Parking lot after lunch at Greens. I remember laughing a lot at lunch together. I hadn't seen you all for years and I recall such a fullness in my heart connecting with you.
Natalie Kuhn I wish I had gotten to see this in person, but the time you killed a scorpion in heels and a skirt will be forever burned into my memory. You and Mom were opening up boxes from a move and a scorpion came out of one ready to fight. Without any hesitation you picked up a trowel / small shovel and smacked the scorpion to death. Impressive reflexes!
Natalie Kuhn Abby, our mom, and me having breakfast at the Spyglass Inn, outside and by the water. Our mom really wanted a poached egg but the restaurant kept serving her a hard boiled egg (maybe it came back three different times??) until both Abby and I said, "Mom maybe they just don't know how to make that kind of egg here, maybe you can order something else." On this trip we also went horseback riding in Santa Maria together on the beach for our mom's 51st birthday–my sister and I were a little reluctant and on the horseback ride Abby's horse let out a loud passing gas noise and Abby gave her quintessential look of "really??"
Natalie Kuhn Three generations celebrating something. Abby, Great Aunt Lee, our mom, and me in our home in Corte Madera.
Peter Hamberger I don’t know the exact dates of these photos - they range from probably 2005-2008, all during summers in harbor beach, Michigan, which is how I know Abby. These photos remind me, of course, of being young and carefree and a little bit careless together sometimes, but in really thinking of those times now, they remind me of Abby being a trailblazer and a trendsetter, a loyal friend, confident in herself when we all weren’t confident in ourselves, and above all, just being a ridiculous goofball in all the best ways. Xoxo. Peter
Natalie Kuhn Visiting our grandmother "Grammy" at the Heritage in San Francisco with our mom. We would usually go for lunch, maybe a walk too. The staff would give us a gold sticker with "VISITOR" written in green, and sometimes we would forget to take our stickers off before going to our next errand or activity. One time we were in a grocery store and someone approached Abby and simply asked, "where are you a visitor FROM?" She immediately ripped off the sticker. We later laughed about who would approach and ask that, but also we guessed the shiny gold sticker was too tempting to not ask about.

Abby and I visited a Kohl's at the San Rafael Northgate Mall to look for something specific, maybe a blouse? As we were perusing the racks a young sales person came up to us and started talking about their "Kohl's Kash" program. He was going on and on and I politely repeated, "No, thank you I am not interested" throughout his whole spiel. Finally t...
Natalie Kuhn One of Abby's friends broke this chair in August and sometime after that I sat on it unknowingly (it had been loosely shoved back together). As I sat on it the chair it immediately collapsed and I was on the floor. LOL. Somehow I just knew and I said out loud, "Dam***" Abby!" thinking if it wasn't me it had to be her who broke the chair. I thought it was surprising, but also hilarious. We laughed about it later.
lucy stillman Oh Abby, I don't know how to sum up our friendship in a post! I transferred to Redwood as a Junior and we quickly became best of friends. We had so much fun together - when I think about it, all I remember is laughing! I can hear your laugh still, the way you would say "LOO-CY" with the emphasis on the first part. You made high school for me. We grew a garden together in Ecology and made fun of our physiology teacher (who was insane!). We adventured around Marin in your giant Benz, hung out in your mom's attic (sorry Ceci!) and even roadtripped down to visit your sister in SLO, filling up an air mattress at a gas station and somehow shoving it in our car. Everything was sparkly and fun with you. You were strong and funny and intelligent and loving. You loved your friends and I hope you know we loved you too.

Natalie Kuhn When I visited you in Oregon during your first weeks of college I wouldn't stop talking about how great Costco was–I was obsessed with the free samples. You decided we would try it out and it was completely PACKED with students and parents, super overwhelming. I didn't mind and ran off to find samples and try to lead you to them as you pushed one of their huge carts. You hated everything about the place immediately and we left with limes and canned tuna, nothing else. I think you even said something like, "we are NEVER coming back here". So much for you and Costco.
Natalie Kuhn I spent a Christmas in London with classmates and every day we were there we passed this shop that reminded me of you. I sent you the photo through Facebook to let you know I missed you.
Natalie Kuhn You came to visit me at college and you were given some cash to spend on our time together. We went to the nicest restaurant in the area at the time called Steamers (seafood, steak) and bought whatever we thought was the most extravagant. We were the youngest table in there on our own and couldn't stop laughing about it. At the end you paid in cash and took special care to place each twenty down slowly pretending we were some wealthy heiresses or something (I think the dinner was $80). You were always so quick to assess situations and make amazing jokes that kept us laughing for hours.

Natalie Kuhn Abby's first car. She was very proud of it and named it "Pasha" which is Russian for small and also used as a child's name. Abby studied Russian in college.
Natalie Kuhn Abby was my +1 to my first company holiday party at the startup Experts Exchange. This is a photo of us with another pair of sisters (one was my work friend who brought her twin). Our parents were also in San Luis Obispo for my winter graduation ceremony but this evening was a time for the two of us to catch up.

Natalie Kuhn When I had Lasik eye surgery on both eyes and couldn't see for an evening you entertained me by playing your favorite Netflix comedy specials so you could watch and I could listen. You made jokes about how it would be fun to feed me different food items to see if I could guess what they were, but I vetoed the idea immediately. Creative and hilarious in every situation, but still a bit prankster.
Natalie Kuhn Abby, Jenna, Chase, Dad, and I went out on Scout from the Presidio Yacht club around the bay for Father's Day–probably 3-4 hours of taking in the views. We had Mollie Stone's sandwiches with an Andes mint inside. Abby and I recalled how she put an Andes mint on my lower bunk pillow on a boat trip once. I didn't notice it was there and proceeded to sleep on it. In the morning my face was covered in chocolate and everything smelled like mint. Abby looked over at me from the top bunk and goes, "Oh good you found the mint pillow I left you." We laughed hard.
Natalie Kuhn
Natalie Kuhn I think all I said was, "can I take your photo?" and this is what you did. It was right before I asked you to come with me to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge since I never did that while I lived in California (at this point I was in Chicago).
Natalie Kuhn I asked you to come walk across the entire Golden Gate Bridge with me but we only made it about 100 feet since it was so loud. You warned me since you had already walked across it with Mom, but I didn't listen of course. All I remember is shouting at you over the cars, "IT REALLY IS LOUD" and you said something like "YEAH, I TOLD YOU THAT... ARE YOU READY TO LEAVE NOW? ". So we walked back to the car and left. We did look at the view and take a few photos though.
David Morgan Even though Abby and I hadn't seen each other in person for a few years, we would text fairly regularly. Hers was a friendship that I valued very much and that did my soul a lot of good. Here are some things that have made me smile over the last couple of weeks: 1. If memory serves, she was "technically" the first girl I ever asked out. To the Kiddie Dance. She said yes and we brought the house (casino) down with our Grand March. We crushed it. 2. She was the only one of my friends in HBRA that I felt truly understood the absurdity of the place. It's hard to describe it to the uninitiated, particularly for someone like me who "married in." She went through the motions with unmatched zest, enjoying every minute but never taking herself--or the resort--too seriously. 3. We were each others' "back up." Somewhere along the line, we agreed that if we were both still single at 40, we'd marry. 4. Future plans always consisted of building a "sky bridge" between our cottages so we could meet and hang out without dealing with everyone else. 5. We had a fake imaginary punk rock band called "Bad Wicker." She made t-shirts once. 6. We referred to each other as HBIC (Head B**** in Charge) with regularity. 7. At least once a year, she would send me a text message containing a cartoon of a pickle with Nicholas Cage's face. Picholas Cage. 8. She was one of the few people who understood my deep affection for Batman. 9. When she met my wife, Crystal, for the first time, she immediately said, "You and I are going to be friends. Now come on, let's go pee together." Legendary. 10. For our wedding, she painted us a garden stone with my name and Crystal's name on it and "Cottage #31." It's in our backyard and I get to see it everyday. I don't know if I'll ever meet someone with as much passion for their journey through life. She took every step and every turn with a laugh and a well-timed, often hilariously inappropriate, joke.
Natalie Kuhn Outside celebrating post official graduation.
Natalie Kuhn Too excited to take great photos of you crossing the stage.
Natalie Kuhn Mom, Dad and one of your best friends Nick.
Natalie Kuhn I came to Oregon to watch you graduate college and would not stop with the photos, but I was really excited for you. And I loved your green heels to match.
Natalie Kuhn I visited you when you lived in Boise and you were showing me around town. We both love coffee so you recommended we swing by the "Human Bean"–a play on human being and coffee. You said the name of it so casually since it was a common chain there, but I just burst out laughing. It made you laugh too. It was a funny concept for the name of a coffee shop. We joked about it years later too.
Amelie Sterling This is an ongoing inside joke that stemmed from the 2013 family reunion in Santa Cruz. One of the younger cousins at the table made a comment about not eating carbs and we just cracked up! Purely the fact that he was so young and made this comment to us. I think he might have also said a comment about Abby having a bad hair day, but we let that one slide.
Natalie Kuhn Abby hard at work, but with a smile and dressed in style–very typical. She sent me this back in 2013 but I can't remember the context other than "here is a photo of me at work".
Amelie Sterling When my dad passed away in 2017, Abby immediately reached out and said how much she appreciated him. She also said Dixon told her if she ever felt alone at the family reunions that all she needed to do was find my dad and was always thankful for his company. Wanted to share that memory that Abby shared with me through this photo from July 2009 with Tom, Lea Ann, Lanny, Ade, and Dixon. I think Margot might have taken the photo.
I was gearing up to start a final paper for my last semester of grad school when I saw that you were calling me. We hadn’t talked in what was probably a few years but what started as a quick check in turned into a two hour call sharing good memories, lots of laughs and some hard news. That call taught me a lot but above all to reach out to those yo...
Lea Ann Sterling Out for lunch together on a California visit, I learned that Abby preferred clip-on earrings. She graciously accepted all the clip-ons of cousin Marion Sterling I sent to her from Michigan.
Anne Morton For the love of Llamas (kidding, they're Alpacas!... Abby was offended when she later found an identical masterpiece listed online for a mere $30 by an amateur art seller who tried to pass them as "llamas"). Taken in Abby's sitting room at the Red House.
Natalie Kuhn We ate dinner together at Fast Food Francais (F3) and got a little of everything to split. You were particularly excited about the crispy brussels sprouts that came with some kind of a cream dip. I was excited about the live chickens in the backyard and I think we wondered what their names were. Silly stuff, but it was always nice to get to just sit with you and have a laugh.
Natalie Kuhn Here I am again making you all take selfies with me on Mom's porch. It was a cool sunny day and I am almost one hundred percent sure this experience was annoying to you, but I am so happy to have these photos of us now.
Natalie Kuhn I feel like I must have prompted you with something like "let's take a photo like we did when we were kids" but now I am not sure. I was just happy to get to see you and catch up. I knew we were on different coasts living different lives but I always looked forward to getting to know you better and who you had grown to be. You were so incredibly insightful, smart, self aware, kind, and had a huge heart for everyone you cared about.
Natalie Kuhn
Natalie Kuhn I semi-taught you to use Marco Polo so we could connect long distance but forgot to mention that if I was notified that you were making a video recording I could watch it live and talk back to you. I quietly watched you make a video in realtime and then asked abruptly, "Hey did you know I could talk back to you on here?" and you responded with "NO! I didn't!" but with a huge smile. I rewatched it today and am so happy I pushed you to try it just for a recording of that smile. You often hated the idea of any new tools and technology but you were open to doing this since I asked ❤️
Natalie Kuhn The time you got bangs. I like that you also captured your Hawaiian nametag in the background "Apikalia". Amelie did you send this to her?
Natalie Kuhn Abby sent this in text to our mom and me in case anyone ever needed a "stock photo" of her. Maybe for when she wrote a book.
Natalie Kuhn When Abby and I were in high school the brand Juicy Couture was super popular as was this specific style of Juicy Couture bracelet. We both wanted one and somehow over the years Abby ended up with two–one she had found and one that she or I bought. I think at a certain point we each had one, but then she ended up with both. She text me this in 2019 from work to show that she wore them together for each of us. I had tried to give her a different style of friendship bracelet (we each had the same beaded one) but it pinched the hair on our arms so we stopped wearing them. I still have mine. But we laughed about how when either of our bracelets pinched us it was a reminder to think about the other.
Natalie Kuhn Festive nails for the holiday with your "So it goes." tattoo peeking out from your sleeve. Your nails always looked amazing.
Natalie Kuhn You had a huge laugh about my turtle shirt–sorry not sorry that I like turtles. Just another opportunity in which I decided to take a selfie with the three of us together. We were taking in beautiful views of the the bay and Sausalito hills even though it was a cloudy day. We made comments about what it must be like inside the homes on the hills and how they got to look at the bay like this whenever they wanted.
Natalie Kuhn We ate inside the Trident and you were coming off of a really hard day and week. We took in the beautiful night views off the water. Even though the evening was a little stressful I was just happy to be there with you. I just wanted to support you in everything you were going through. I love you.
Natalie Kuhn You always loved cats, and so here you are petting one you had just met. Somehow you located it within the place we were visiting. I don't have the photos but you ended up sitting next to the cat for a bit in that bed to pet it. It seemed to really like you.
Natalie Kuhn Just a candid shot of us joking around and possibly annoying Mom with all our generational catchphrases and popular culture references. We went to get dinner together afterward.
Natalie Kuhn Another candid of us joking around. I wish I could remember what we were laughing about. Exploring an events space in the Sausalito hills.
Natalie Kuhn I don't think you had any idea I took this photo. I just liked your outfit–particularly your scarf. I think it was one of your favorites because I see it in a lot of photos (I should have asked you about it). You were opening a door and I wondered what you were going to find. I don't remember what we found but I didn't photograph the reaction so probably nothing. You always had such funny responses and comments to everything in life, particularly surprises.
Natalie Kuhn We walked around some shops in downtown Larkspur and even found you a possible chiropractor. After that we ate dinner at Don Antonio and then picked up some froyo at Mags Local Yogurt. We ate in the window together. It was a nice quiet night, not too cold.
Natalie Kuhn Abby spending some quarantine time with a neighbor cat she called "Poo Poo" whom she said came to visit often for tuna, water, and bird watching. The second photo is from later in the year (8/26/20) when Abby called her over by whistling.
Natalie Kuhn This is a photo of us catching up on the phone. I sent it to you when you made fun of me for wearing a waist purse. I loved joking around with you even if it was you teasing me.

Natalie Kuhn We got DJ Chinese takeout–all the classics. It was excellent as expected and while I was waiting to pick it up for us I took a photo of one of the fish in their tank. We spent a ton of family dinners here growing up. So much had changed since then but we still loved the food. I am grateful for all the good and bad with you Abby. I wish we could make some more good memories. Love you.
Natalie Kuhn We tried this Mexican place for the first time and got some chips, dip, and tacos–everything was great. One of your friends said it wasn't good because she didn't like the bowl she got, but you said some funny things about how she doesn't like most places. You always made me laugh.
Ceci Browne Abby and I were celebrating the marriage of our friends Matt and Joe. It was an outdoor ceremony at the Falkirk Cultural Center and it was a Very hot afternoon, but we all had a lot of fun. Matt is from Michigan and Joe is from Texas so the music was a fun mix from both regions.
Anne Morton You got us matching sweaters! which we were supposed to go out and wear together, lol. We never did... mine is sitting here next to me... time to wear it :) It was right before Christmas. mine on right, yours on left. Photo credit: Abby Kuhn.
Anne Morton When I was told to drive my car 90 miles (as a requisite to pass smog) and then, unprompted, you just said, “pick me up tomorrow, we’re going for a ride.” And that we did… up and down the freeway, laughing, gossiping and playing the Kill Bill theme song, which I randomly had in my car ...On this wild journey… to the end of the world, as we said. Taking a brief layover at Nordstrom Rack, which quickly burst our girlish bubble… walking in, and walking out within minutes, depressed... it wasn’t the mecca we remembered/imagined it to be… After a moment, disillusioned, wallowing in ourselves, we picked ourselves right back up and hit the freeway again! Music blasting. Ending it all with fancy Sunday night pizza on the bay, back home where it all began in our beloved Sausalito. You made that day for me ...something else entirely… Which is what you were and will always be.

Natalie Kuhn I guess I talk endlessly about snacks (and particularly trendy health ones) because for my birthday you sent me a ton of them. I have one box left still. Thank you Abby!
Natalie Kuhn Abby text this photo from her friend Lynna's birthday at Piatti (italian) after their bocce ball tournament win. They had a ton of laughs after Lynna almost accidentally ate her birthday candle and Abby warned her saying, "Lynna nooooo!"
Natalie Kuhn We tried out a new local salad place and split an elote salad with a side of crispy cauliflower. We caught up a little about life but kept it light and mostly focused on the present time we had together. After that we spent a thrilling time (not sarcastic) exploring the Container Store and eating candy in the Safeway parking lot. You got Mike and Ikes while I ate Sour Patch Kids since we couldn't find a place serving hot chocolate.
Natalie Kuhn We ate on the porch of the Trident, watched a huge seagull be a part of a selfie, and waited for the people on their fancy water hoverboards to fall into the water. We laughed about how a pelican grabbed and ate an entire hot dog out of your hand in Tiburon when we were younger. After that we went over to the Left Bank for creme brulee and you were embarrassed of how I smacked it too hard with my spoon. We picked up DJ's for my plane ride and I said my final in person goodbye to you. I love you so much and will never stop missing you.
Natalie Kuhn We went through Bluewave Express Car Wash and you reminded me about how much you were afraid of car washes. I wanted to laugh a little since I think they are fun, but appreciated our complete polar opposite sentiment. Similar to Santa Claus lol. There were so many ways we were different. I loved you for you just being you. After the car wash we went to Grocery Outlet and showed me some of the things you liked to buy–all I can remember right now are pistachios. One thing we both like.
Maddy Foster To those of you who knew us well, Abby was my best friend in the world. Coping with this loss has been overwhelming. Right now mostly what I feel is not only loss, grief, and heartache but a profound sense of disbelief. A week ago I woke up and found out my best friend was gone. I didn’t understand; I still don’t. I still keep waiting to see her… To laugh endlessly with her over some ridiculous conversation that only we could follow. Though we’ve known each other since birth, through the years our friendship and bond grew even closer. While miles apart – I in Maryland and she in California - it never felt like she was any less present in my life, and I hers. Through thick and thin we were always there for one another and it feels like a part of me is missing. In some ways it will probably always feel that way. Everyone who knew Abby describes her as a bright light, and that she was. She lived her life full speed ahead and not a second slower. Her laugh could light up a room. Every moment with her was a wild ride, and we loved her for that. The countless phone conversations, texts for days, and time I spent with her are priceless. To share the number memories I have of her would take forever and a day – and forever with Abby could never be enough. Abby and I always talked about growing old together, being batty old ladies at Shady Pines… We would joke about all the antics we’d get into. She was the Frankie to my Grace, the Blanche to my Dorothy – even in youth. Growing up together in Harbor Beach our group was always into some sort of mischief - countless hours spent careening around on scary golf cart rides – nearly launching several of the 10 people aboard into bushes, taunting the caddy shack assistants, spinning out of control as we knocked each other off the tubes being towed behind the crash boat, jumping off the lighthouse – as Babs made her infamous leap into the lake, casino nights, playing monkey golf as she wore that ridiculous raccoon hat, shouting "BULLS***!" at Macaroon (as loud as she could) while we played cards by the pool, falling off the back of our sunfish and dragging behind on the line while we panicked/burst into hysterics in the middle of the lake; the list goes on and on… I can’t even go into the number of inside jokes we had; they’re too absurdly outlandish but we loved every minute of the antics and chaos. One of the more special memories I shared with her was of course our wedding day. She stayed with Derek and me in the days leading up to it and stood next to us on that (finally) gorgeous day and it meant the world to me that she could be there. I know Hank, Clare, and Monica were especially thankful when they woke up to a surprise Abby-spent-the-night after the wedding. She showed up to our brunch in full glam – AKA her bridesmaid’s dress, full makeup - looking SO. PRETTY. It was one of the best, funniest, most ridiculous weeks and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Losing Abby is a whirlwind of emotions and I know we are all grieving… But we need to remember how she lived. We need to remember that bright and wild lunatic who loved everyone she met unconditionally. As I told Natalie, I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone more devoted than Abby. There is just no one like her; it isn’t humanly possible! She wouldn’t want us to mourn for eternity (though she did a lot of things I told her not to – so tough cookies Babs). We never think it will happen, until it does. We know too well that the ones we love can be taken from us in an instant. Abby was my person. She knew me through and through. To me, she isn’t really gone. I still feel her in my soul, like she’s here next to me. Maybe I’m a little crazy but I still talk to her every day. I need her to be here… even if she can’t be. I hope she gets what she always wanted – to haunt me around the house and make me laugh forever. People keep asking if there’s anything they can do. I ask you only to show your family and friends just how much you love them. Make a point to tell them, even if they already know. I ask you to remember Abby. I’ll see you when it’s time Babs… dressed in a floppy sunhat, giant sunglasses, floral pants, carrying our seashell-covered handbaskets.
Natalie Kuhn Big smiles in white cheetah print.
