It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Jay Christopher Toma on February 6, 2025, at the age of 64. Jay was diagnosed with plasma cell leukemia the day before his passing. Surrounded by his family, he passed away peacefully at San Antonio Regional Hospital. Jay was born on March 10, 1960, in Encino, California, the son of Joseph and Catherine Toma. He spent his childhood in Van Nuys, and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks in 1978. In high school, he was a football standout and played middle linebacker. In 1984, he earned a business degree from California State University, Northridge. Jay’s professional career was centered around the food service industry. For the first 17 years after college, he held various restaurant and corporate food service roles. In 2000, Jay began working as a food service kitchen and operations manager for the Ontario-Montclair School District, where he dedicated the final 16 years of his career. He medically retired in 2016 after undergoing a second open-heart surgery to repair an aortic dissection. In retirement, Jay relished spending time with his family, becoming a talented home chef, and embracing his unofficial role as the “mayor” of Upland Summit through frequent walks with his dog, Sydney. Those who knew Jay will forever remember his dry wit, love for his family, culinary skills, and passion for sports. He was a pillar of quiet strength and support for many, often offering a listening ear and wise counsel. Beneath his tough exterior was a deeply loving and compassionate man who took great joy in caring for his family. Some of his most treasured moments were spent outside, drink in hand, cooking for his loved ones and soaking in the presence of his wife, children, and grandchildren. Jay is survived by his beloved wife, Lisa, of Upland; his sons, Nick (Chelsey) Toma of Oceanside and Ryan Toma of Rancho Cucamonga; his sister, Janice (Brad) Eledge of Saugus; and his grandchildren, Emerson (4) and Banks Toma (1). The Toma family will host a celebration of Jay’s life on March 7 at 12 p.m. at Upland Hills Country Club. Family, friends, and all whose lives Jay touched are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Upland Animal Shelter in honor of Jay’s love for animals. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Nan Wong, who performed both of Jay’s life-saving aortic dissection repairs in 2011 and 2016. Thanks to his skill and care, the family was blessed with invaluable years and memories with Jay that they will forever cherish. Rest peacefully, Jay Christopher Toma (Dad/Pop). You are deeply missed and will be forever remembered.
